ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- First, they hit your e-mails and now identity theft is on your text messaging.

Dozens, maybe hundreds, of local cell phone customers are getting texted about their bank accounts. It’s all a scam.

One targeted bank quickly turned the tables on these new identity thieves.

Phillip Perry was in his Flatwoods living room watching TV Monday evening when his cell phone signaled an incoming text message from what claimed to be Home Federal Savings and Loan.

Philip says the biggest scam red flag here, was obvious.

“I knew it was a scam because I don't even have an account with Home Federal,” Perry said.

Home Federal President Darryl Akers says dozen of calls began pouring in and 2/3 weren't even Home Federal customers. Some people called the requested number, where an automated voice asked for social security and account numbers.

Home Federal quickly reacted. They found their system wasn't breached and that someone out of north Hollywood California was sending the scam texts. The bank immediately locked down and secured any affected accounts, and after a few hours of hard work, they got the text number disconnected.

Home Federal is now offering everyone who got the text message, customers or non-customers, free assistance with an identity theft security service.

Akers says to remember, it's a universal given that no bank ever calls and asks for identification numbers.

“The bank already has your information, why would they call and ask for it,” Akers said.

The only reason is to pull a scam. The bank president says Universal Credit Union in Huntington got hit by the same scam last week.

If you got the bogus text message, do not respond, and call Home Federal Savings and Loan immediately.
