CINCINNATI (AP) - Kroger Co. wants a share of the tax rebates going out in the next few weeks.

The Cincinnati-based grocery chain is offering gift cards with an extra $30, $60 or $120 added to them if taxpayers exchange their checks for gift cards at a Kroger store.

People should start rebates of up to $600 and $1,200 respectively for individuals and couples with another $300 per child beginning next month.

Kroger says gift card amounts correspond to the payment amounts outlined by the Internal Revenue Service for the stimulus program.

A shopper turning a check into a $600 gift card would get two gift cards totaling $660.

You guys who call this a scam are idiots. I bought a $1200 card several weeks ago. I got $1320 in gift cards, for $120 extra. I used a credit card that gives me a 3% rebate on grocery store purchases for another $36. And their dumb computer credited me with a $1200 grocery purchase, so I get 10 cents per gallon off gas for more fillups than I can use in a month. I shop at Krogers anyway, so its a great deal.

Hmmmm....the way I hear it, several employees are on suspension at this very moment due to this gift card idea. Someone should investigate that.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 15, 2008 at 06:20 PM
you can use your credit card to buy the gift cards not your check

I am a fan of Kroger; I do almost all of my grocery shopping there, but they won't be getting all of my rebate! Lol. And to Melinda: if you spend $100 in groceries, you do get 10 cents off per gallon! At least it has ALWAYS worked for me.

Posted by: ww on Apr 17, 2008 at 05:59 PM
Not getting my refund! saving mine for gas!!lol

Posted by: Anon on Apr 17, 2008 at 02:04 PM
Good thinking giving Wal-mart all your money. Their prices are a little lower now but what they are trying to do is to put all other competition out of business. After they put all other companies out of business nobody will be getting any good deals from there either!!

Posted by: My Input on Apr 17, 2008 at 01:11 PM
Now if this was Wal-Mart it would be a better deal. With my groceries I spend more than that in a month. However I have plans for my rebate already - putting it toward my house and a little cushion in my checking account! To each his own.

TO: Andrea on Apr 16, 2008 at 10:34 PM, your right! I totally forgot about that. lol here they even match Speedways discounts.

I believe this is the funniest tactic I have ever seen a business use to get into a person's pocket. To think I want a $600 gift card from Kroger and then add a bonus to it. Most people can't afford to spend $600 at Kroger in a year. I guess once the card expires, you will lose the rest of your money. My tax rebate will go in savings or to pay some bills. That's my stimulus. I work and pay taxes to help the ecomony. I going to help myself with my rebate.

OK I used to work for Krogers and it is a scam, how dare them say something like this, they are so greedy here we work hard for what money we do get why would we want a kroger card for the money we really need, that company steals enough off of us and the gas card its NEVER 10 CENTS OFF for 100.00 in groceries. How about Krogers company putting in your rebate into our gas cards and groceries that you pretend is cheap and the kroger card makes it so much cheaper. That's a bunch of bull. To all you companies who are thinking of ways to steal hard earned dollars it sure isn't going to you if anyone has any sense it will be going to walmart, because they have cheaper gas and cheaper prices than your store does. Plus they actually give you .10 cents off without your little tomoto card.

As a former kroger employee, this is not surprising! Anything for a buck! An attempt to take advantage of those in need, sounds to me. Lure you in with a little extra money on a gift card. They could lower their prices and be just as if not more effective. Wonder who else will follow suit with this GREAT idea?

Posted by: RIP OFF on Apr 17, 2008 at 06:37 AM
THIS IS JUST ANOTHER RIP OFF?FOOD IS WAY TO HIGH ALREADY, I BUY FROM SAMS CLUB.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 17, 2008 at 04:33 AM
Sounds like a scam by K-Rogers. Most people wont fall for that.

Posted by: ton on Apr 16, 2008 at 11:26 PM
Geez! What will the almighty folks at Kroger come up with next? Why not JUST LOWER PRICES? DUH!

Posted by: Sue on Apr 16, 2008 at 11:25 PM
Sears is doing the same thing.

Posted by: Andrea on Apr 16, 2008 at 10:34 PM
Hey Laura! Guess what?! Some Kroger locations DO have gas stations! :)

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 16, 2008 at 10:26 PM
Krogers is high enough. This is no deal. I dont want to put all my money on their food. Thats just crazy. You wont have many fall for this.

Posted by: RoaneCo. on Apr 16, 2008 at 09:52 PM
I'm surprised car dealers haven't done this in some fashion. The greed of big business really amazes me.

Posted by: Laura on Apr 16, 2008 at 09:24 PM
Just a tad greedy if ya ask me. Now if gas stations were doing that it would be different, since most of peoples money goes down the gas tank now days.

they must be desperate.
