UPDATE FRIDAY @ 6:40 pm
Wesley Anderson is the man who was able to track Brandon down. Anderson lives in Alum Creek and says, "I was determined to find him." Mr. Anderson rode 64 miles on ridgetops looking for Brandon when he heard him just before 10pm. Anderson didn't even want to be on the news, he says he was just doing what was right. He noticed some emergency crews in the area, asked them what they were doing and set out to help.

Kanawha County's Emergency Services Director Dale Petry says there are dozens and dozens of voluntees who helped in the search and he can't thank them enough. They include, Wesley Anderson, the Loudendale, Davis Creek & Alum Creek Volunteer Fire Departments; Kanwaha County Sheriffs Department and the WV State Police; The Metro 911 Command Center, The K9 Units and the West Virginia Bikers Association.

UPDATE FRIDAY @ 1:45pm
Metro 911 has released the audio recordings of the radio traffic when a Kanawha County Deputy announced that Brandon was found. Click on the link above to listen.

UPDATE FRIDAY @ 1:06pm
Brandon Maddy's family issued this statement:

Brandon and I would like to extend our tremendous appreciation to everyone who took Brandon into their hearts last night. We would like to thank all those whose tireless efforts and relentless search brought Brandon safely home. We would also like to extend our gratitude to everyone who was on the trail, to all those who were preparing to join the search, to all who kept him in their thoughts and to those who lifted him up in prayer.

We would like to give a special Thank You to Wesley Anderson, the gentleman who finally discovered Brandon’s location. In addition to Mr. Anderson, we would like to thank Kenneth and Ernie, the park rangers who immediately implemented the search and elicited the help from every hiker and Bicycle rider they encountered along the way.

Brandon’s safe return is a direct reflection of the efficiency they employed in contacting the fire department and county sheriff’s office. The fire department and sheriff’s deputies are to be commended for the strategies they devised and the competence they exhibited, along with the West Virginia Division of Forestry, the K-9 Search and Rescue team and volunteer groups.

We would also like to thank the media representatives who were so efficient in alerting the community to the need for help, and so kind an unobtrusive as we awaited updates on the search efforts and ultimately Brandon’s return to the command center. Thank you for respecting a very tired little boy and his distraught family.

Brandon stated that at time he was found, he was preparing a bed for the night with the intention of resuming his back-track of the trail he was on when daylight returned. He was careful to find an area away from a cliff, insuring that he would not roll over and find himself at the bottom of a hill and loose his way. He said that after saying “hi” to a bicycle rider, he never heard anyone until Mr. Anderson found him, other than hearing some rustling that he thought may have been a person on foot a bear.

The thoughts he expressed after he had received a clean bill of health were that perhaps Ms. Kinder, his third grade teacher, would forgive that he had not completed his homework.

Once again, Thank You to everyone who helped.

    Sincerely,
    Glenda Maddy

I said I am glad he is okay...I guess if keeping a eye on my children makes me Miss High and Mighty I'll keep that title. Thanks for the comment.

So glad to hear he ok. How cute was his statement about not doing his homework?

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 18, 2008 at 03:04 PM
To ChasMom, everyone on here has left positive and concerned comments and you had to go out of your way to criticize the parent. spit happens, call it karma but it always has a way of coming back and visiting you. I hope when this does happen that you learn from your mistake miss high and mighty.

I know that some of the trails at KSF aren't marked very well. An old boyfriend and I had taken a trail not far from the Hernshaw entrance to the park and ended up at a place on Davis Creek and got a ride back to his car. We thought we were on the trail, but we obviously weren't. Thank God Brandon was found safe. It could've been worse. The park should look at making the trails a little safer and mark them better.

I was in KSF last night hiking with my 5 year old and my husband. I saw a couple sheriffs go by and some fire department vehicles while we were on Davis Creek Trail, however I had no clue what was going on. When we hiked up to Middle Ridge Road about an hour or so later I saw a helicopter go overhead, but didn't think much of it. We came out of the park at about 8:30 and again I saw a couple sheriff's cruiser driving up and down the park, but not once did he stop to ask us if we had seen the boy. Once I found out about the missing boy I saw it as very odd that 4 policemen drove right passed us and never once asked if we had seen anything. I would like to think that if my son was missing they would be asking EVERYONE in the general area about it. I saw LOTS of people in the park last night and no one seemed to be concerned, so I assume they didn't know about it either. I can only imagine what his parents went through in the hours he was gone. I am so glad that they found him!

WSAZ,Not that it matters but thought I would let you know. Kanawha State Forest is in Loudendale. However I am so glad that they found this little boy. I have an 8 yr old and cant imagine him being lost in KSF. Between the bears, coyotes, and snakes OMG im shivering now. Way to go Loudendale Volunteer Fire Dept for helping out.. and all the residents of Loudendale that turned out to help as well. Just goes to show there is a few here that still have hearts and care about others.

I am very glad that they found Brandon safe, but as a parent myself I have to wonder how do you go about losing a 8 yr old during a hike, parents need to watch their children a little more carefully. Hopefully this was a one time mistake and other parents will learn from it.

Posted by: Dianna on Apr 18, 2008 at 12:20 AM
So happy that he was found in a relatively short time frame. An angel must have been watching over him. Thanks to everyone in the community who looked for this little man; I'm sure he is very grateful! Thanks to WSAZ for running the scroll across the bottom of the television and keeping us updated on your website.

i was a member of the search squad. i know this state forest like the back of my hand be it i grew up in the area. i told them the exact trail and where he was probably headed (wildcat ridge) yet the officials stood there drinking coffee and flapping their gums. the goal of finding this little guy would have been accomplished much faster if the "people in charge" listened to those who know the park. and where did they find him? wild cat ridge. just REALLY glad they found the little guy. i would have stayed out all night/day if it had come down to it. thanxz to all that helped though. good job all.

I wish it was a requirement for all kids to carry an air horn when walking in the woods. It would be heard for miles.
