CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The School Building Authority voted Monday to fund a new elementary school on Charleston's West Side, as well as several other projects throughout West Virginia.

Monday the SBA is deciding what projects it will fund throughout the state.

The Kanawha County School board asked for the funding to build a school in what they call "the flats." The plan is to consolidate Glenwood Elementary and Chandler Elementary into one school.

Monday the SBA voted to give Kanawha County $8.5 million dollars to fund the project. Voters will still have to approve a levy for the county to have enough money to fund the entire project.

Members of the Kanawha County School Board want to build the new school at the Cabell Field along the Kanawha Boulevard.

This is a project the county has been working on for years. In fact, this is the second time it has requested money to fund the project.

School board members tell us they plan to pitch the exact same plan next year in hopes of consolidating two more schools on Charleston's
West Side.

Lincoln County will also get more than $6M for a new elementary and middle school.

Boone County received more than a million dollars for additions and renovations needed at Brookview Elementary School.

The SBA approved more than $3M for additions and renovations at six elementary schools in Braxton County.

In Cabell County, Beverly Hills Middle School will get nearly $500,000 for renovations needed there.

The SBA also voted Monday to give Mingo County more than $16M for a new comprehensive high school.

Scott Teays Elementary in Putnam County will also undergo some renovations. The SBA awarded the county more than $2.4M for additions and renovations there. A school spokesperson says the money will help the county build an addition at the school and remove the portable classrooms that are currently at Scott Teays. Right now, the school's library, computer lab, and several of its classrooms are in portable structures.

The project will add two additional classrooms, a library, media center, student restrooms, new office space, and work space for teachers. The money will also help pay for other upgrades at the school including new flooring, lighting, and roofing.

The county will give an additional $500,000 to fund the entire project.

The SBA awarded more than $88M dollars Monday. 18 counties received the funding.

The field where cabell high school used to be is not a good place for an elementary school. it is right in the middle of an awful drug neighborhood, with drug dealers standing on every corner.
