WASHINGTON, DC (WSAZ) -- A soldier from Greenup County has been killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense says Army Specialist Jeremy Gullett died on Wednesday when his vehicle hit an explosive device.

Gullett was 22 and lived in Greenup.

His mother, Cheryl, says her son wanted to be a soldier since he was little.

Gullett leaves a wife and the couple's 21-month-old daughter.
Reports say he was also adopting his wife's 6-year-old daughter.

Gullett's body was returned to the Greenup area Wednesday morning.

His funeral is set for 2pm Saturday at Wurtland Middle School.

Visitation is set for Friday night from 5pm to 9pm; and Saturday from noon to 2pm.

Gullett was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Ky.

My deepest sympathy to the Gullett family. Such a tragic loss. To a lot of Americans, this is just another number. So sad. One death affects so many lives. Just think of the widow, the children, the mother, the father, the friends, the aunts, the uncles, brothers, sisters, his fellow soldiers. One death touches so many lives. Please don't say he signed up for this. Would it make a difference is he had been drafted. He did not sign up for death. He signed up because he loved his country enough to die for you and me to have freedom. Freedom that is taken for granted. Freedom like voting in an election. Freedom of speech - like I am doing writing this entry. Freedom of speech like others are doing by saying that he signed up for this. No, friend,if if it weren't for brave men like Jeremy Gullett, this would not be the great nation that it is. I thank God for great men like him. I hope his family knows that most Americans feel the same way. Again, my deepest sympathy.

As I think back of all the great memories as a child, I can recall the many hours spent growing up with this great man. It seemed as kids Jeremy, Chester, Andy and I were like 4 brothers. Spending many hours out in the yard and down at the old barn playing and just having fun. Its these thought that I try to keep in my mind during this sad time in all of our lives. Jeremy wasnt only a cousin, nephew, grandson, uncle, brother, son, husband, or daddy, he is much more. A true American HERO to his country and to his Community. Jeremy,You will be sadly missed but always be remembered as a true HERO for your achievement to keeping this country free. Harold,Cheryl, Janeth, Katie, Chester, Jenny, you will always be in our prayers and if their is anything Jessica and I can do please let us know. SPC. Jeremy R. Gullett you will never be forgotten.

I am so sad for your lose. God has a special place for him. My prayers are with the family. I know how hard it is to see our loved ones go off to war. My nephew was over there, he was shot, he was lucky. At the moment he is at Walter Reed Hospital in DC. My son is in the Army also, I just hope and pray that this war will end soon so all our boys and girls can come home. I pray for all the soldiers every day. I thank God for them because without them, what kind of country would we be? God bless you all.

May I first start by saying reality is just starting to set in for most family members. Everytime we turn around it is always there to make us realize just how much of a hero Jeremy was. Everyone of us are so proud of Jeremy for fighting for our freedom. May I remind anyone who makes rude or hurtful remarks that Jeremy also fought for your right to be able speak free and express yourself. So there again you should be thankful. Jeremy is my cousin, actually thought more of a brother he will be greatly missed but I can reassure everyone that my cousin died doing what he always dreamed of his entire life and although letting him go will be hard all of us family members and friends we will forever keep him in our thoughts. He may be gone but he is flying high with them wings he just earned and will always be with us. I love you bub. Thanks to every one for the kind words in this tragic time. I promise they are read more than you know.

FROM A DAUGHTER OF 2 VETERANS. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO YOUR FAMILY. GOD IS ROUNDING UP SOLDIERS AND HE'S NEEDING THE GOOD ONES TO FIGHT SOON, SO IT WON'T BE LONG WHEN WERE REUNITED. MAY GOD GIVE YOU AND THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS THE STRENGTH TO GRIEVE AND BE HAPPY THAT WE WILL SEE EACH OTHER SOON. HE WILL ALWAYS FLY OVER YOU AND BE YOUR GUARDIAN ANGEL. GOD BLESS YOU!

I am VERY SORRY for your loss. You will hopefully be comforted by the knowledge that he was fulfilling his dream as the article stated. I will keep you in my prayers. As for HappygirlUSA and your post. Leave your personal feelings about the war and others out of this. This is not the place to air your feelings and be hurtful to others when they are grieving. You should be old enough to know better than to say mean things and voice your bad feelings when you hurt others in the process. This young man believed in his country and what it stands for. He died defending your freedom and rights. You know the right to freedom of speech. Don't bash his memory for something you would not have if it were not for him and all of the other soldiers past, present and future. Where are your manners? Not nice at all.

You can shed tears that he is gone, Or you can smile because he lived, You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back, Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left. Your heart can be empty because you can't see him Or you can be full of the love that you shared, You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember him and only that he is gone Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on, You can cry and close your mind be empty and turn your back, Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on. god bless

happygirlUSA, you are dumb. Why does everyone blame Bush for everything? A young man died, this is not the place to talk politics.

Posted by: happygirlUSA on May 9, 2008 at 04:21 PM
What a terrible loss. Bush is a satanistic, money hungry, kill as many people, ours or theirs, just do what you can to make me richer. You know, like steeling oil. How terrible that all these people have to lose their live for such a meaningless cause. I commend all of our soliders for standing up for the US, but should we really be there anyway? God Bless all our soliders and their families

So sad to hear about, yet another loss. As a combat veteran myself, i can relate to the horror of War. This soldier sacraficed his blood for our stars and stripes to fly high and let freedom ring. We don't know how lucky we are to be Americans! To the Gullet family...i never knew your son, but he died fighting for our country. May God comfort and bless you during your time of grief.

Here we go again. A solder dies and it time to BASH BUSH. Come on people, he signed up for it. I respect him for giving his life so that we may be free. It is sad that another solder has died, but dont blame Bush. Bush didnt make a draft, they went on their own will. So before you all start saying that the war is wrong, Bush is the devil, and whatever else, think about it. He signed up for this, he was not forced. We need to stay there till the job is finished so that Jeremy wouldnt have died in vein. God Bless

Each time the news reports the death of a soldier we feel sad, but when it happens to one that we have watched grow from small child into a fine young man our hearts are broken and we are heavy with sorrow. Jeremy gave his life willingly for his country and for the freedom of a people who we only pray valued his ife as much as we did. Jeremy was my son's friend. My heart aches for this brave hero's family. He will always be missed. My prayers are with each and every family who have lost heros to this awful war.

To everyone who knew Jeremy "Chubs", as I always called him, I want to say this. As Jeremy's cousin he had always wanted to a part of something special. That something special was the ARMY and the Fire department. He lost his life fighting the citizens of the United States. As a firefighter, he fought to protect his community from harm. He was a very special person to our family and will be dearly missed. I am asking everyone to pray for our family in this devistating time. His family loved him dearly and nothing can replace what our family has lost. This young man deserves to honored and remembered as a true "HERO". He fought to protect us at home and abroad. I am going to miss cousin Jeremy, we love you BUB!! He will be honored by our fire department (Little Sandy Fire Department) with a full Firefighters funeral. Thank you Jeremy for all you have done for our family, our fire department, and most of all for the United States of America. GOD BLESS!!

Jeremy was a student of mine just a few years ago. He was a great kid and would make any parent proud. In one of his e-mails to me, he told how happy he was with his wife and baby and with what he was doing, serving our country. My prayers go out to his family and friends.

My heart goes out to his loved ones.I pray for the safe return of our soldiers.I understand why they were there in the first place, but it seems there will never be an end to this war.I totally support the soldiers and their families. They are making the ultimate sacrifice while our leaders are turning us into the most hated country in the world. We can not keep policing the world. We are losing respect and going bankrupt in the process. It is time to take care of our country and its people.Stop sticking our noses in everyone's business.Take back our streets and cities from the gangs and drug dealers.Punish our criminals and the judges, prosecutors, magistrates and politicians who are letting them go.Hold them accountable on election day and every day.God Bless America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just know that Jeremy died a HERO by serving our country. You have the support of not only our community, but definitely all in the tri-state area. God Bless you all. You are in my prayers.
