CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- With the price of gas continuing to rise, there has been some talk of cutting the work week to four days.

The Kanawha County Commissioners debated that plan for some of its workers.

But Commissioner Kent Carper wants to make sure the idea doesn't cost the tax payers any more money.

The employees of the Assessor's office is for the idea, meaning they work 10 hour shifts.

A decision could be made by the end of May.

Lawrence Co. Schools are toying with this idea too. I think it makes a lot of sense. The heating and cooling costs should go down. One less breakfast and lunch per week to cook would have to be a great savings. Less water for toilets and drinking fountains. Less gas for the buses.Less money spent on janitors and hourly workers.Just turning most of the lights off an extra day would make a difference.

hey nancy i think your suffering from a case of jealously, get well soon! if you dont like it than tough luck i think its a great idea! infact the university of rio grade is considering doing it oo.

I thinks NANCY is a little jealous! LMAO get over it lady. People who work for the city, county and state don't gt paid much...you can see it every year when they post their salaries on the internet.

This would save a lot of gas and help to save money for the employees too. All state, county and federal should do this now...

That sounds great, in theory, but I, along with a lot of people, don't get off work til 5, and 2 extra hours a day would mean, I wouldn't get off til 7. I would get home about 7:50. That leaves a whole hour and 1/2 to spend with my son. That includes fixing and eating dinner, hw, which can be almost an hour) and bathtime. That's crazy. Not to mention I would miss any extracurricular activities, like baseball and basketball, and school functions. I would be much more likely to go along w/ a reg. 4 day schedule, and for those who can, work Friday, or whatever day) from home. The days off can be staggered so that there will always be someone in the office to cover things.

What a great idea!!! We should encourage all companies to incorporate this option for employees.

They need to do it. The country is in a bad situation right now. Im sure most folks wouldnt mind the offices being closed on Fridays. They will just have to adjust their schedules accordingly. All businesses should consider it. How about going back to everything being closed on Sundays as well? Hey, people made it through back then, I think we can deal with this considering the gas situation.

I think this is a brilliant idea. I think all Gov't, State, County, City workers should do this. I don't know how it could cost more tax dollars as long as we are not paying overtime for more than 8 hours a day. If so, then rewrite it to say overtime after 40 hours/wk. This a really easy way to save gas dollars and enjoy a 3-day wknd every week. I guess there might be child care issues if it's over 8 hours a day, but that's the only downside I can see.

Everyone is paying the same price for gas. If they make arrangements to man the office 5days a wk. Some take off Mon. and some on Fri. But just being open 4days a week is not what the people of this county are paying for.

Nice that they are thinking out of the box, but I doubt this would work. Do you really think people with 3-day weekends are going to stay put on that day off? No - in fact, they may end up spending more money in gas and leisure activites than they would if they simply went to work! Nice idea in theory, but I doubt it would work. Additionally, I am sure there would be logistical ramifications that they haven't even thought of yet.

What makes them any better then the rest of us that has to work five days a week get real the State and County workers gets enough paid days off... they sure the hell don't need any more breaks.... MAKE THEM WORK FIVE DAYS A WEEK JUST LIKE WE DO.. WHAT IS FAIR FOR ONE IS FAIR FOR ALL....
