CARTER COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Call it an F1 tornado on a scale of zero to five. That's the call from the National Weather Service about the storm that hit Carter County, Kentucky Sunday morning.

The NWS figures the tornado sustained about 100 mile per hour winds with a swirl. The diagnosis came after a trip from the National Weather Service to Carter County to take pictures and assess the wind damage.

Carter County's emergency management director said with less than 10 homes and a few outbuildings damaged, some utility wires and a pole down, this area will likely not qualify for any FEMA financial aid.

Carter County Judge Executive Charles Wallace said he's talked with state representatives about possible financial aid, but it's not clear if that will come through for the families.

I live on the road where homes was damaged. And if I had a dollar for all the lookie see-r's that have been up this road we wouldn't need any financial help!! Give us a break and get out of your car and actually do something instead of just creating unnecessary traffic..we can't even get help to fix the ditches that was destroyed by utility trucks, our road is gone..and no one seems to care, not enough damage officials say, in other words NO ONE IMPORTANT ENOUGH lives up this road for it to get attention.

knocked two of the trees in our yard down. thank goodness they went into the road instead of back this way, b/c they may have smacked our home.

i hope all the families that were affected by the tornado get some type of help! im sure glad noone was seriously hurt or killed during the tornado.

This is a very bad situation. Too bad about the Fema, I guess if the damage was worse then the feds would step in. The reason that the Feds went to Oklahoma is that the area was almost completely desimated. Carter County was lucky and only suffered an F1, Oaklahoma suffered F4's. I am sure that the community will come together to help those in need, thats the American way.

TO ME:::::yes the majority of us do have home owners but whatabout the people that cant get it for whatever reason? What about that? What do you think we should do?Just turn our backs?I think not.is that what Jesus would do?Maybe you didnt mean it how it sounds but......I would help anyone that lost everything, what is wrong with you?I will pray for you and for all the people that has lost so much.

How many homes were completley destroyed and how many were damaged? Why is there only 1 picture on here they need to have all the pictures on here so our community can look and see what everyone needs to do.I will sure do my part in helping and i think the majority of the people will.

Surely the community will step in even if our so called state dollars wont do anything.

My heart breaks for all the families that this has happened to,Lets see fema will help who?????they sure went to oklahoma to rebuild but not here whats wrong with that picture, yes i can understand if these ppl did not have home owners insurance the economy is so bad cant hardly afford to buy groceries.I think that everyone should give with their free hearts right now, what if this was you or your family. Not sure how many houses were not liveable but i heard that 1 family is without a home.God bless all of you,my prayers will be with you.

Posted by: carter county on May 12, 2008 at 10:58 PM
to me.....of course we have insurance, don't you? if you lost everything, would you not want some help, and besides they hand out funds or financial aid, to everybody else, including other countries so why not help these people that need it. Im sure they are hard working people that did not ask for something like this to happen. Thank God no one was hurt... and if they offer them financial aid, I Say Praise the Lord, and pass it around to all that had a loss.
