CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It has been a back and forth battle for months between the Kanawha Charleston Health Board and the mayor of Charleston.
With funding cuts, a proposed move canceled; then the president of the board not being re-appointed.
Speculation is flying that the Kanawha Charleston Health Board could soon have a new leader.
A source tells us director Kerry Gateley is planning to step down in a private meeting on Thursday.
Gately will not comment, but several people say he has been looking for another job.
The city wanted the department to move to a different spot to make way for a new hotel, but the department was taking its time, so the mayor cut their budget in half.
Then the hotel deal was pulled off the table.
On top of that issue, Mayor Danny Jones also decided not to re-appoint Dr. Steven Artz to the board.
Now, there's more speculation Artz could be a possible replacement for the director's position: a job that the board has sole control over.
Mayor Jones said he hopes Gateley is not leaving.
Artz didn't want to comment on the situation, but did say he knows Gateley has been looking for another job.
Some answers may come this Thursday when the board meets in executive session.
