CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The West Virginia Public Service Commission's staff and Consumer Advocate Division are asking the PSC to investigate Verizon's telephone service in the state.

Consumer Advocate Division Director Byron Harris says a formal investigation is needed because the number of customer complaints against Verizon has tripled in the last seven years. The PSC had received 806 complaints through April and Harris says he expects that number to reach 2,000 by the end of the year. Harris says the complaints include quality of service and repair problems.

Verizon spokesman Harry Mitchell says fewer than 1 percent of Verizon's customers have complained to the PSC. When a complaint is filed, Mitchell says the problem is fixed.

May 27,2008 had problems with our internet service. Called Tech told us problem at the CO put in new circuit pack. June 15th, no internet was told by another tech that needed an new modeum. Went to the store and purchased one per the tech, call when we have the new one in would come back or send someone. no one came some one clled and told us how to handle the problem from Tx. at least I could understand him.......not from India. Well the next morning you guessed it NO internet. So we decided this is has been an nightmare changed To cable.........My husband took the new modum back according to what the ONLINE person told us to do. So I called and talked to some one at Billing and told me we needed to send the modum back..............I wanted to speak with supervisor and he hung up on me. I am very unhappy with not only the service and the runaround but being hung on it was not acceptable esp. when I requested to sp with his Supervisor....I am also in the same field wait for credit.

I paid by phone to Verizon from my Debit Card $103.50 for phone services in a Senior Rehab for my grandmother. They claimed that there is a prior account open with another customer and the Senior Home must contact them to disconnect services before services can be rendered to my grandmother in the same room. The home could not locate the family so I requested for my deposit to be returned in 2007. Unto this day after phone calls, faxes, mail, etc they see the problem and continue to give me the run around. I want to file a complaint to get my money back. Who can help me?

stop belly aching all companys are making cut backs.if your problem is past the nid/point where vz's line ends and yours begins/it is your problem.unless you want to pay vz to fix it or purchase an inside wire plan.yes VZ does have local trucks with wv tags/and yes they do pay local fees and taxes.including the city user fees.calling the tech's names like stupid is the pot calling the kettle black.if you know so much fix your own phone! yes,the billing sometimes gets hosed up,but so does other bills.yes they sometimes take far too long to respond, but the techs are working as much as they can,or as much as the company will allow, these guys have a life too.they even set up a new problem solving team to help when all else fails, its a shame it has gotten that far but at least they are trying something.p.s the last time i called comcast it was a week wait also.relax people, with the economy in the crapper we are all suffering.

Posted by: Crooked Billing on May 15, 2008 at 02:49 PM
Have you ever noticed that when you pay your bill, they take your money from your account within 24 hours, but take "up to 3 days" to post it to your account? And if you actually decide to pay your bill on the due date, then you are charged extra late fees since they will hold your payment those 3 days, even when it shows you paid it and it is deducted sooner? Anyone else, when you pay the bill, it gets applied immediately. I pay my verizon bill electronically and it really bothers me that they have deceptive billing practices. When you go back and check the date that the pmt. was applied, it show the time and date pmt was made, not when it was deducted from my account. Yet, when you ask them about the late charges they say you need to pay your bill 3-5 days before it's due date or you will be charged. Then what is the purpose of the due date? I think what they do is illegal and they need to be stopped.

The WV Customer Care Team is accessible via a toll free number (888-331-4711) and an e-mail address (wvcustomercare@verizon.com) to customers who are not happy with the response they’ve received through the normal channels at Verizon.

Another comment about Verizon. I've recently noticed all their vehicles have Maryland tags. If they are vehicles that are running business for verizon in WV, seems they should have to pay licensing fees for using our roads just like everyone else. These are not vehicles just passing through. They are the regular service vehicles. I bet they don't even have to have a state safety investigation.

Hey meat, I had to call them a few times, and I finally told the person, "Look, I mean no offense, but can I please talk to someone I can understand?"

Posted by: Answers on May 15, 2008 at 09:38 AM
so you are one of the chosen few? the addressing problem could be handled by the county directors - it is not the fault of the people of wv that we do not have uniform addressing, hopefully that is being corrected - HOWEVER it is the fault of Verizon who 1.do not complete their service calls and close tickets. 2.charge customers for services NOT rendered. 3.fail to upgrade the systems in WV while using WV money to expand their systems in other states while they cannot maintain what they have. 4. hire inexperienced technicians from private firms to do what their experienced work force had done for years. 5.get online and try to defend what evidentley is the truth in fact their services as far as physical and customer rank right down there with inadequate or poor at best. So answers please understand the people of WV are tired of being used so you can make you CWA wages and set on you computer at work and type responses instead of fixing our phones and data connections

I recentley moved to an area that has DSL, so I switched to Verizon (Early November), To this day I have only recieved one bill, Took 3 months to get the correct DSL, I have to go online and pay my bill, They actually turned my bill in to a collection agency even though I had paid it, (luckily I kept my confirmations from e-pay). Worst service I have ever had, and if you try to call good luck.

We never had a problem with Verizon until we moved into our new home. We had several service calls because the phone and the internet would just stop working. Finally after 2 years we had the phone and the internet removed. I found out that I need the phone service for my alarm so I had them put the phone service back. When the workman came he told me that there was a bad jack and that is why my service wouldn't work. Now we had paid extra for the inside maintenance plan the whole time we had Verizon, which was prolly 25 years. We paid for it for 2 years in this house. All I can assume is that they knew what the problem was for those 2 years but didn't want to fix it because it cost them. I feel that they cheated us because the workman said it is considered an existing problem. Yeah it existed when they said it didn't. Bunch of crooks!

OUR PHONE SERVICE WAS JUST RECENTLY OUT FOR 3 WEEKS BECAUSE A TELEPHONE POLE HAD BEEN TORN DOWN ( THE POLE WAS REPAIRED IN 1 DAY ) BUT VERIZON DIDNT EVEN BOTHER SHOWING UP OR CALLING AFTER 3 APPOINTMENTS HAD BEEN MADE TO FIX THE PROBLEM !!! & JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE DONT CALL THE PSC TO COMPLAIN DOESNT MEAN THAT VERIZON DOESNT SUCK !!!!!! OHH YEAH WHILE UR INVESTIGATING THEM GET AEP TOO MY POWER BILL NEARLY TRIPLED WITHIN ONE MONTH & THERE WAS NO CHANGE IN THE USAGE !!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd like to answer some of the questions from customers im a verizon employee (1) we dont have to come out to cut off your service we do it from our office (2) if we cant find you its because when you say next to my aunt pam and behind my mamal's house well we dont know your aunt pam or your mamal , yes ive heard that (3) it does take time for us to get out there to fix your service we have (X) number of employees if we had enough to fill every request you have as soon as you make it 90 % of the time we would look like the city and you would see our guys parked everywhere sleeping in their trucks , (4) if it took 3 weeks to turn on your service and the number kept changing?? odd let me ask you a question did you have to pay a deposit ?? cause you only have a limited time to do so before the order is canceled and has to be retyped (5) i agree the lines are bad and need replaced i wish we could replace every one of them we as employees want thing better too

Posted by: Kathy S on May 14, 2008 at 12:21 PM
We haven't had any problems with them BUT I think AEP should DEFINITELY be investigated b/c where we live the power goes out every time a bird lands on a wire! wind & rain? Forget it. Out for HOURS & sometimes DAYS! Lose all our food in freezer/fridge no matter how hard we try to save it. AEP certainly doesn't pay you for THAT. If you're having a hard time even one month & even one day late, well they can certainly get out there FAST to cut your power OFF, but repair and restore it? HA! Plus some of their "customer service" people are really jerks & need to be fired. I try to be nice to everyone but you can't be to some of AEP's people when you call about a problem. My husband was really ill once/in ICU. I wasn't sure if he had mailed our pmt or not & he was unconsious so I called AEP & asked if they could check & see b/c the last thing I needed was them to come shut off my power while he was so ill if he hadn't mailed it. RUDE woman said wasn't "her problem"

I dropped them like a hot potatoe due to all the problems and went with another tv provider and Vonage. I have had no problems since. Plus it is alot cheaper and more options. LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!

you ever notice that when you dont pay your bill, they know exactly where to go to shut it off, But If there is a problem with your service they have no clue where you live? This has happened to me countless times. I have even told them this. Last time it was out, I told them that if i didnt pay my bill, they would be right here to shut it off. The lady told me "Well, Yes of course we would."

It took Verizon almost three months from the day I called to order service to install my phone. They changed my phone number three times in the process. When I finally did get a phone, I could hear other people's complete conversation, but couldn't make any calls myself. On the rare occasion I could make a call, others who had, according to Verizon, "tapped in" to my line could listen. Verizon also charged me for three months service that I didn't receive.

Posted by: Verizon Problems, too on May 14, 2008 at 08:13 AM
I have had Verizon for several years and I don't think my phone bill has ever been correct. I have to call each month to get it corrected. Finally, when I had one month correct, the next month they reversed the correct charges and re-charged my account a higher amount. They said I paid my bill with a debit card which caused that to happen. HUH??? I ALWAYS PAY FROM MY CHECKING ACCOUNT!!! I was even told a few months ago that they were tired of crediting my account and I was abusing it. HUH?? I was being overcharged for my service and I was wanting my money back, yet they were not willing to do so. Believe me, now that we're done with our "contract" we are looking at other options. If there is going to be a class action, I will beat you all to be the first to sign up. If I charged them for all the time I spent on the phone having to deal with them, I would have free service for life. While most reps were nice, that does not excuse the problems I had with billing.

Has anyone heard anything more about the grant for Verizon to start putting high-speed internet in rural locations? I would love something else besides dial-up.

Posted by: jan on May 14, 2008 at 06:37 AM
I had a problem with my phone and was told it would take a six days before verizon could come and repair my phone that is a shame that you pay 70 to 80 dollars a month for a phone but when it needs fixed it take a week for them to get here.

Posted by: Brenda on May 14, 2008 at 06:05 AM
About 2 years ago, my phone service quit working. We checked the service at the "box" and it didn't work which indicates the problem was on the outside which is Verizon's responsibility. They came and supposedly fixed it several times but it never did work. Verizon told me they were going to charge me for service calls since the problem must be inside my house. If they phone doesn't work at the box it isn't a house problem. And yes... we tried several phones just to make sure it wasn't the phone we were using. Since Verizon is our Internet company as well, we kept the service and dropped it down the per call price plan. Should be cheap (but really isn't) since we can't make or receive a call! This way we could keep the Internet which works fine unless it is raining. We generally didn't make many calls anyway so we just began using our cell phones all the time which has worked fine. I can't wait until a reliable Internet service comes to my area so I can CAN Verizon for good!

the state lets them off the hook for contributing to the states bills. The copper lines in the state are in fact typically the original strands ran by technicians 30 and 40 years ago. the fiber they have ran does great to keep the COs connect to one another but do little when the state does not force them to carry the fiber into the neighborhoods to modernize the system. also note their cry for technicians is one that should fall on deaf ears as they have been running EXPERIENCED technicians off for the last ten years in favor of young technicians who do not know their systems. I find it funny when you make a call about a DS circuit being down that they have to eventually find a retiree and have him advise the young technicians on where and how the circuits are working in a particular branch circuit. Those of you who put your politicians who have done nothing for years back into office again thank yourselves for continuing the trend of no service at the PSC because I had to get my son

Posted by: Anonymous on May 14, 2008 at 02:14 AM
verizon is not the only thing that needs investigated maybe aep also for taking their time to restore service it is all about the overtime and pay that is all they don't really care if you have service or not think about it

Maybe this relates to why competitive local phone providers Ntelos and West Virgina FiberNet has captured so much landline business among the larger companies & government agencies in Huntington.

Verizon Sucks! It takes forever to get them to tend to the repairs that need done. I also think that it is crazy to have to pay so much for phone service. As soon as I can get high speed internet, I am getting Vonage.

I've had Verizon phone/internet service for years and have no complaints. The few times I've had problems I got immediate help from tech support. I'm sorry for those customers who've had problems with this company.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 13, 2008 at 06:37 PM
1) DSL was installed in March of '06. My phone never worked again. Nobody could ever find the problem. 2) DSL was slower than dial up. I was several hundred feet outside the limit. They failed to tell me that. 3) When broadband was installed, they told me I had to click a link in an email to activate it. I clicked the link, it didn't activate the broadband, it signed me up for a gaming site and extras to the tune of $40.00 a month. I actually asked the Customer Service person if that had been a scam and she said, 'Yes'....I would love to be refunded for some of the things I paid for that never worked. WV needs a class action suit against Verizon.

Verizon is a joke my phones were out for 2weeks and i kept calling and they would tell me it would be fixed the next day,it took 2weeks and they were still billing me for the time it was out!!!everyone should have high speed internet but they only have it in certain areas,my mom cant get it and she lives in kenova????? And trying to reach them is a big JOKE.We need better service...

Posted by: when it rains on May 13, 2008 at 04:55 PM
Verizon has one of the poorest repair services. Every time it rains my sisters telephone goes out. When she calls they tell her that someone will be there in a week. This has been going on for over a year. Because by the time the repair man gets there the rain has stopped and the phone is working. But everytime it rains it will go out if for just 5 minutes. And they wont give her credit because the phone is working when the repairman comes. So she has to pay the full amount and dont have the service. Wish another company would move in here to run them off!!!

Posted by: Terry on May 13, 2008 at 04:52 PM
Our phones have been off since Friday, and no one at Verizon has any idea when they will be back on or what the problem is.Makes sense considering I haven't seen a Verizon truck in the area at all. This outage has lasted longer than the last water outage in Fort Gay (and that's quite an accomplishment!)

Posted by: fed up with verizon on May 13, 2008 at 04:51 PM
When I moved into my new home I called Verizon over 3 weeks ahead of time scheduling my appointment making them aware that this was an newly constructed house. On the scheduled day I missed work and waited all for the tech to show up. When the appointed time passed I drove to a neighbors home and called. I was told that it would be another week because the person who took the order failed to inform them that I would need the box placed outside my new home. I was over a week getting my new service and was told that I would receive credit for the outage. When I got my bill it was higher than my regular bill because of what they called the service call. This is awful. I tried to call and get service with someone else but verizon is the only company in my area. So I am stuck for now with them because we cant even get cell service in our area or I would just use it. There has to be something that can be done. And any repairs take up to a week to be done.

Posted by: shawn on May 13, 2008 at 04:12 PM
i work at verizon we are swamped, calls are back to back either ppl wanting service or not understanding their bill or disconnecting to go with another carrier , we do our best to offer you everything we can and we work as fast as possible to help each and every customer , i love this company and every day customer service is preached at us , as with any company no one is perfect im sure there are area's as with any company that needs improvement we do try and we do care we are short staffed and are adding ppl to our staff please apply and help out , im sorry WV doesnt have fiber optic yet it is in md and va and is the answer most of you are looking for its the most dependable service out there , we are compared to other companies left and right but they iont have the stipulations we have to follow we are a utility company and the PSC or the FCC and our rates are mandated by the Utility commission if your bills to high call them

How can Harry Mitchell just shrug his shoulders at 806 complaints to the Public Service Comission in just 4 months. I can guarantee that number will more that double in the next week. That is the kind of response you would expect to get from a company with weak customer service.

Posted by: finally! on May 13, 2008 at 03:57 PM
Most companies strive on providing good customer service. Verizon is the complete opposite of that! I am happy that the PSC is now involved.

Posted by: just a citizen on May 13, 2008 at 02:22 PM
Verizon is a big joke. For the past two months I've been billed nearly $1500 for toll charges for long distant calls when we have our outbound long distance calls from home blocked / restricted. I've spent countless hours on hold and talked with over a dozen verizon employees. So far, I been called a lier and told the first credit they offered was an early Christmas present and maybe I would qualify for payment arrangements. This is very kind of them to offer to make payment arrangements for a bill that I did not make. Finally, I was told they would send a repair person to look a the line. For a fee. I'll fight it, but what if I was an elderly person who did not pay attention to their phone bill? File the compaint with the PSC and A.G. and hope for the best, cause there is no customer service, with verizon. (Only Greed!)

I think Verizon needs some competition. When you have a phone problems that need repairing, you have to wait 2 weeks for it to be fixed. This is just not good enough.

All I have to say is .....FINALLY. If anyone has Verizon service you know what I'm talking about. I'm sure there are some that haven't had any problems, however for the most of us (I think I can speak for most) it is HELL calling customer service and trying to get something fixed. I personally have never made a complaint, but it's nice to know I am not the only one with issues with Verizon.

If things are fixed then why for over 2 years there has been a fiberoptic box within 1/2 mile of my home and I still do not have access to high speed internet. My job requiers it and I guess I will have no other choice but to go with overly priced satlite service.

Our power went out for two days my family tried calling verizon and suddenlink and it was worthless I kept calling aep and they kept telling me they were fixing it well I didn't believe them and drove down there myself looking for the problem I didn't see one problem so on my way back up this awful hill I passed two aep trucks, 4 asplundu trucks and 4 other orange trucks and within a few hours yesterday night the power was back on. If i would have had a politician live up here it would have been sunday when it went out but that didn't happen. Its ashame with new technology they have and it takes them forever on how to turn the power back on. We can pinpoint from space your license number in your drive way but gosh forbid we cannot fix a terminal on a power poll.

Well I have had many problems with Verizon ; not to mention when I first signed up for the plan they told me it would be "this set amount" monthly - ha ; my 2nd bill was like almost $50.00 more then what they said it would be. Told me I had free long distance and then i was getting charged on my bill for each long distance call I made. And then when I try to call and talk to somone to fix it they flip it all around to where I dont even know whats going on & I end up with nothing fixed ; and they will not give you a straight up answer for anything which is very annoying. and when i called for service once they kept saying they would come we sat home 2 times out of the week "missing work" because they said they would be there didnt show up either time.

i got rid of my verizon house phone because i was on a party line, too which, i was not supposed to be. my caller id not not work. and yes, they had frest batteries. the service stinks, then when you call them it is a act of Congress to get a real human being to talk to you. to top that off, then they keep wanting you to have service even though you have said NO; over and over. sure glad that i am rid of them.

This does not suprise me. About a year ago, we had trouble with our home phone lines.. we called and reported it and were told that a tech would be at our home within 2 days. After 3 weeks and many many calls to Verizon, our phone still wasn't fixed. We have a small Verizon utility building at the end of our road. Most of the time we would see the Verizon truck parked there and a sportscar backed up into a driveway to an abandoned house a short distance away. One day I was driving by and I seen a Verizon technician exiting the building along with a female who was obviously not an employee of Verizon. By the time I got to my driveway and parked, the female drove by in the sportscar. I called Verizon the next morning and informed them that if their technician would've spent more time making repairs and less time with the female in the Verizon utility building, they probably would not have had to deal with all of my phone calls. The technician was there that day to fix the phone!

I signed up for their "dry loop" internet service and could not get it to work. They continued to charge me for service that I did not have. I would call for help and a lot of their call centers are outside of the U.S. and they could not speak English well enough to understand what I saying and would hang up on me. They refused to give me a # to call and complain to as well. I would spend the entire day on the phone w/ these people b/c they transfered you from one person to another or they would hang just hang up. I can not tell you the frustration I had when dealing w/ Verizion. They refused to send a worker out to help me w/ my problem. I think that everyone who has had issues w/ this company needs to take a stand. First they need to have Americans taking my phone calls. That is the first step this company needs to work on. OK I could go on for hours about this. I will pay as much as Comcast asks for internet b/c I will never try the Verizion Co. out again. What a disgrace!!!!!!!

The quality of the phone service in Boone County is the same as it was when the phone was invented. Residence have found that they can get better quality service with two dixie cups and string.
