HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Tourism is a big business in West Virginia.
The state sent fliers in newspapers touting camping a great value.
Now, with gas at close to $4.00 a gallon, that will either be a boom or a bust for local campgrounds.
Tina Adams counts her pennies by planning ahead: even on vacation.
At a campsite: she is noticing a lot of her vacation neighbors are no where in site.
“By this time last year, this place was packed, this year, you can see, there's not anybody around," Adams said.
Management at Beech Fork said it's still early, but the holiday weekend will be packed.
A big boost for the state park could very well be the gas prices, hovering at $4.00 a gallon.
Betty Mills drives a van and says filling up is expensive.
“About $140 bucks to fill it up. That's the reason we're at Beech Fork now,” Mills said.
“I think we're going to experience a lot of first time campers this year, folks that normally go to the beach are going to go camping,” Dillard Price Assistant Superintendent of the park, said.
Betty Bryan comes out with a group of friend. They look forward to it, but Betty had to recruit her son and his truck to bring out the camper.
“The bigger the vehicle, the bigger the motor, the more gas you use,” Bryan said.
