HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Tourism is a big business in West Virginia.

The state sent fliers in newspapers touting camping a great value.

Now, with gas at close to $4.00 a gallon, that will either be a boom or a bust for local campgrounds.

Tina Adams counts her pennies by planning ahead: even on vacation.

At a campsite: she is noticing a lot of her vacation neighbors are no where in site.

“By this time last year, this place was packed, this year, you can see, there's not anybody around," Adams said.

Management at Beech Fork said it's still early, but the holiday weekend will be packed.

A big boost for the state park could very well be the gas prices, hovering at $4.00 a gallon.

Betty Mills drives a van and says filling up is expensive.

“About $140 bucks to fill it up. That's the reason we're at Beech Fork now,” Mills said.

“I think we're going to experience a lot of first time campers this year, folks that normally go to the beach are going to go camping,” Dillard Price Assistant Superintendent of the park, said.

Betty Bryan comes out with a group of friend. They look forward to it, but Betty had to recruit her son and his truck to bring out the camper.

“The bigger the vehicle, the bigger the motor, the more gas you use,” Bryan said.

Okay, gas in 1997 cost around $1.00 per gallon. gas prices were at a $1.46 in 2000 right? That is a 32% increase just there. This was when Clinton was in Office. The Gas started going up prior to Bush getting in Office. Bush did not go into office until January 2001. People, face it, bush is one man and not the oil Industry. Just a thought...

If our governor cares so much about us, why not push to eliminate the 50 cent gas tax. That would be a good start. There is one other thing that people could do...SLOW DOWN!!! Going 55 verus 70 will save you about 3-5 MPG. Maybe we could eliminate all these new traffic signal lights along Corridor G if they moved the speed limit back down to 55 and ENFORCED IT. All these lights went up and the traffic accidents went up too because of people going 70-80MPH on this road.

Research how gas prices work and you will see that Bush has no say so of how much gas goes for. I swear alot of you must not have gotten a degree in college. Stop bashing the President!

I am going to be at the beach from June 1st to Augest 8th. Gas prices arnt gonna stop my vacation.

Posted by: WHY? on May 15, 2008 at 11:48 PM
It must be nice to be able to afford to take a vacation. I've worked for minimum wage all of my life and I mean if it was more, it was'nt much more. Even at 40 to 60 hours every week never once have I been able to afford to go on vacation. I might get a week or two off but it never meant I was going anywhere. All it meant was getting house work done that I don't have time to do during the work week. Vacations are for rich people, as a matter of fact everything is for rich people. A poor person doesn't have a chance in this world. Now they are taking our payday loans that made it a little easier to deal with these horrible gas prices. I bet the crime and suicide rate will go up within the next year. The government just keeps making it harder and harder for the working class people to survive. We are the backbone of America, we are the ones who wipe the butts because noone else wants to, so why do we always get picked on?

Posted by: Chris on May 15, 2008 at 09:13 PM
How about eliminating the 50 cents per gallon gas tax there Manchin? Obviously it isn't being used to pave roads.

Posted by: Bev on May 15, 2008 at 05:27 PM
We are using our vacation time and money to fix our house and property. I refuse to pay so much for gas. We all need to get more exercise so no time like the present. I agree with ANONYMOUS @ 10:20 pm if we start walking and refuse to buy gas sooner or later the price will either sky rocket or come back down.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 15, 2008 at 04:53 PM
One way people could possibly cut down on their gas is to send their kids to school next year on the school bus instead of congesting streets by dropping off your kids at school while other folks cannot even get to work on time. Bus drivers are driving empty school buses while I or someone is paying their salary and benefits. Another way is to cut out about half of the sporting events you're driving your kids to per week. Yes, I do have kids and it can be done.

I guess it is going to take getting out the crayola crayons and drawing some of you a picture in order for you to see what Bush has done to this country. But I doubt that would even help some of these Bush fans. This whole country could go down the drain and some people would still think he was greatest thing in the world.

Posted by: DERRICK on May 15, 2008 at 02:46 PM
To Billb; Bush is our President right? There is no one in the world that could convince me that President Bush and Congress couldn't do something to lower this ridiculous price. Our government is getting kick-back from these oil companies. The only thing the public can do to help ease the price is QUIT DRIVING AS MUCH! But we are spoiled. Everyone thinks we have to run the roads everyday. That's what's wrong. We need to park our cars and trucks and send a strong message to the oil companies. The President of Mobil/Exxon was on the Today show this morning. His only concern is pleasing his stockholders. He admitted that! We need to change our habits and let them know we mean business. But the President of this country could do something to ease the pain. Richard Nixon in the '70s froze the price. Although he was a crook in other ways, he did do something to help the people then. Bush could absolutely do something to help!!

i agree......... this country needs to shut down for 1 day !!!!!!!!just 1 day

Posted by: pattyann on May 15, 2008 at 12:52 PM
every one needs to ban together and not buy gas for just one day and that would help we tried that here in portsmouth by sending text messages and even sent an email to wsaz asking them to help get it out there with no response

Posted by: Bob on May 15, 2008 at 12:48 PM
Booming population on earth sucking up all the resources. If you think a little man like George Bush is affecting oil prices, you need to get out of the holler a little more. America is competing with other growing Economies. America is no longer the new kid on the block. America will be forced into mass transit, more economical means of transportation etc. The glory days are over. Obama is going to lead us to the promise land. Sounds like a very scary movie...

Posted by: Anonymous on May 15, 2008 at 12:47 PM
we cant even think about going on vacation were everything is so high & with school starting back so early we have to buy school clothes.

Posted by: anomymous on May 15, 2008 at 12:39 PM
i would like to know why every gas station has a different price you would think they would all be the same at least around here ,and raising gas before they get another load i still say if the politicans had to buy their own gas and food their would not be high prices how much do you think it cost the tax payers for bush to fly to isariel don't make much difference the low income people well be the ones to suffer

Posted by: SB on May 15, 2008 at 12:32 PM
Hey BillB, Bush is commander in chief, head of the country, I think everyone knows there is more he can do to lower gas prices. If our democratic nominees have ways for lowering gas, he can do it too! Everyone needs a bumper sticker that says "My child is on the honor roll, but my president is a moron"

Posted by: Debbie on May 15, 2008 at 12:14 PM
Bill, Bush's policies and the decision to invade Iraq are part of the problem, but only part of it. Speculators, decreased production, and even our driving habits are also to blame. You can't drive 5 seconds without seeing a single occupant vehicle being driven and that vehicle is an over sized gas hog. We must get over the SUV and hummer nonsense and start reducing our usage. For far too long many have been in denial about that fact, not to mention the extra emissions they are producing and climate problems. Please don't tell me Bush hasn't been in denial of those things until recently. I even heard many scoff at hybrids as nonsense and ridiculous.

Posted by: Fed up!! on May 15, 2008 at 11:52 AM
Hey BillB...it has everything to do with Bush. He's an oil man and he's going to take care of himself and all his other buddies. He could do something about it if he wanted. All the people in office or I should say white house, could care less about the cost of gas. They don't have to pay for it,they get to fill up on gas cards that are paid with our taxes. So why would any of them care about it. It's sad that I'm having a hard time just coming up with the money for gas to get me back and forth to work.

Posted by: Misleading on May 15, 2008 at 10:42 AM
This story is a bit misleading. Yes, I agree gas prices are affecting everyday life like trips to the store, driving to work & back, to school, to the kid’s games, etc...but for vacation? Vacation is a single event. Last year a person most likely spent $100.00 to drive 1000 miles at 20mpg in their gas guzzling SUV when gas was $2.00/gal. This year that same trip will cost $200.00. The extra cost adds up to the equivalent of (2) cartons of cigarettes and a (2) cases of beer. Tough choices to make!

you don't know bill? lol

Posted by: Ashley on May 15, 2008 at 10:28 AM
BillB>> I totally agree. He is just one man. Wanna talk blame? Blame China & India. Blame our dear WV governement who have a higher tax per gallon than the feds do. It's ludicris to think Bush is responsible for all of this. You know if Congress cared more about people than party politics, we wouldn't be in this position. BLAME CONGRESS!

Posted by: Melinda on May 15, 2008 at 10:09 AM
We need other sources of oil if prices of gas keeps going up their will be more crime. Because its hard enough to pay for gas, groceries that are affected by gas, and bills that go up due to gas. We all are getting really mad when we know there are other laces we have oil but we choose to get it from a country were fighting with. Their are riots because of the oil and it will get worse if something isn't done to fix it. And people who waitress such as myself get 2.00 tippers sometimes nothing and our company doesn't pay us the rest that hurts us. You know why everyone turns to drugs, its cheaper and you don't have to think about this screwed up nation. Thats BAD when your drugs are cheaper then gas and food what is this world coming to besides communism!

Posted by: Citizen on May 15, 2008 at 09:56 AM
I would just like to say that all of us can sarcastically thank Bush for the gas prices, but please remember to thank your tree huggers and bug lovers that will not allow us to drill for oil on our land. Also, please thank those residents in California that will not let us drill our oil reserves in the ocean because the rigs may be seen from their oceanfront homes. Foreign countries are drilling in these same oceans a few miles from where we could and then we buy the oil back from them. That's some smart thinking if you ask me.

Posted by: jp on May 15, 2008 at 09:21 AM
what do you think the gas tax holiday is going to do? thats right nothing at this rate it wont save you the projected 25to30 dollars for 3 months at all way to go mccain and hillary good idea yeah right

Posted by: Anonymous on May 15, 2008 at 08:20 AM
BillB: Where does Bush live? Who are his business associates? What does he have major stock in? Come on, get with the program!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 15, 2008 at 08:18 AM
If not being able to go on vacation is your biggest concern, you have no concerns in my book. I'm concerned about driving to the grocery and being able to afford it when I get there.

Posted by: DOnald on May 15, 2008 at 08:01 AM
I am still going on vacation, but just not as far as usual. The gas prices are really hitting my family hard, since we have a commute to and from work. Its time that someone steps in and does something about this issue. Exxon just reported a $10.9 billon in profits for the 1st quarter. They keep padding their pockets while the rest of America are suffering!!!!!!!

Posted by: Gasman on May 15, 2008 at 07:24 AM
I do know for a fact South Carolina was 35 cents cheaper per gallon last week. I cannot wait until the summer. These vacation spots such as Myrtle Beach will be affected due to the people that used to have just enough money to hit the beach, no longer have it.

Posted by: anon on May 15, 2008 at 06:48 AM
I don't think bush has anything to do with this, he is one person and can't do anything without congress allowing him to do something about this, what we all need to do is get ahold of your congressman or women they are the ones that are getting paid off by the big oil companies and thier election fund, i think this country needs to get away from republican and democrat and get a netruel person but not some wack job either,

Posted by: BillB on May 15, 2008 at 05:30 AM
To Just a Comment: Please explain to me what Bush has to do with the price of gas?

Posted by: Mindy on May 15, 2008 at 01:02 AM
I am still going on vacation. I just cut back my spending in other areas. I clip coupons and search for promo/coupon codes for online items I need, spend more time at home, and make less daily discretionary purchases like iced capp's and the occassional mag at the checkout. It's not going to go down anytime soon so I am not to let it make me miserable by complaining and thinking about it all the time. I am going to Jamaica for a week because I compensated by budgeting the rest of the year. It is posssible through careful planning and being an informed consumer on the things that you can get lower prices on. Sure I wish gas was lower in price, but the odds of it going down are unrealistic so one must improvise.

Posted by: Steve on May 14, 2008 at 11:27 PM
what are they playing some game to see how high it can go??this is insane, in some areas of california is cheaper than it is here.the nation needs to stop whomever or whatever is causing this, even if it means impeachment or whatever.$4.00 per gallon is just way to much,"ignorance is forgivable, but stupidity is inexcusable"

Posted by: just a comment on May 14, 2008 at 11:10 PM
PEOPLE CAN NOT AFFORD THESE GAS PRICES...i know as a person that gets out and works i dont know how i can afford this. this is going to make alot of people that are working at fast food chains and working min. wage jobs think twice about even getting out and working. i drive 30 miles round trip every day to work and home and i have made my stops when im on my way to work. this is ridiculous that gas prices have surged this high..does people realize that gas was 1.46 a gallon when bush went into office....Good Job Bush!..way to line your pockets!!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 14, 2008 at 10:20 PM
people need to hit the streets, everyone just stop working, shut down everything....make the government do something....Bush is in Israel, while our country is falling apart, mortgage, etc.
