CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Firefighters believe arson is behind a fire on Charleston's West Side.
The fire broke out around 3:00am Thursday morning in the 8-hundred block of Watts Street.
Firefighters say when they got on scene the rear of the building was fully involved.
Investigators say the fire was definitely set. They also point out the utilities had been turned off.
Back in March, the apartment building was condemned because the city says it was unsafe. Several of the people who lived there went to shelters or a motel, but some spent several nights in the woods nearby.
We're also told the building was set for demolition in the next few weeks. Fire Investigators say the owner was waiting on a permit to remove asbestos in the building before it could be torn down.
Firefighters did find a homeless woman downstairs. However, they don't believe she had anything to do with the fire.
