HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Seven Huntington police officers have died in the line of duty since 1876.

Even though it has been 27 years since the last death, family members and all law enforcement grieve those losses.

National Peace Officers' Memorial Day remembers those brave officers who have fallen and makes sure that their sacrifice is never forgotten.

"Huntington Police Department will now and forever honor the officers’ memories with a display of their photos in our public lobby like the ones given today,” Skip Holbrook, Huntington Chief of Police, said.

"All the officers, new and old, can walk by and see and remember him on a daily basis. That means a lot to us," Jamie Harmon, Officer Paul Harmon’s daughter, said.

Thursday's service memorialized officers from a 40 mile radius of Huntington.

Totally agree with Anon about the "Disgrace" not covering the Officer Memorial Service. I too thank WSAZ for covering it. I agree with everything Anon said about the MUPD and Mr. Harless. Agree with them also that it WAS a tragic loss of life, BUT could have been prevented as he said, if the man had just given up instead of firing at the officers. If you break the law & then run from police, much less firing on them, you're going to die. That's nothing new & certainly anyone with any sense knows that. I'm sorry for Mr. Harless' family but it could have been another police officer's family & officer being remembered at next year's Memorial Service just as easily & Mr. Harless alive. They did what they had to do period. If you don't want to pay for being a criminal either through jail time or with your life, then don't be one! Thank you WSAZ for covering the Officer Memorial Service & shame on the HD for NOT covering it

This was a good thing the H.P.D has done for Fallen Officers. To those who have fallen I salute You. However the H.P.D now is no where up to minium standards.

I commend WSAZ for providing coverage of the Fallen Police Officer Memorial Service. Unfortunately, the Herald Dispatch did not feel that it was that news worthy in comparison to the vigil for Rashuwn Harless.Mr Harless died because he was hiding behind a dumpster and firing a gun at police. Whether or not he was black or white, blue-collar, white-collar,employed, unemployed, married or unmarried, the MUPD did what they had to do or the city would have been memorializing another fallen officer. Law-abiding citizens stop when the police tell them to stop, don't run from the police and certainly don't fire a gun at the police. It was a tragic loss of life that could have been avoided. But, in my opinion, police took another lawless person with a gun off the streets to make the city safer for me and my friends and family

I remember the shooting of Officer Harmon. A guy I worked with was a friend who played ball with Paul. He was heartbroken and the community was in shock. Huntington has been very lucky not to have another fatality in so many years. God bless the families of these fallen heroes.
