CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Marshall University will have to wait to make it onto the NASCAR scene.

Driver Brett Rowe crashed the green-and-white No. 05 car bearing the university's logo during Saturday's qualifying for the Nationwide Carquest Auto Parts 300 race.

Rowe of Barboursville was the next-to-last driver to attempt at qualifying.

He spun into the wall but was able to drive the car off the track at Lowe's Motor Speedway near Charlotte.

The next chance for majority investor Dana Tomes is expected to come in the Meijer 300 on June 14 at the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky.

Marshall is not a financial backer of the car.

Such a shame he got into the wall but several seasoned veterans did the same that day. Really hope Herd Racing is able to keep it going. I was proud to see the herd car out there even though it didn't seem to handle well. For a thousand bucks you can put your name on the car for a race. How cool is that? Also Herd Racing has merchandise available on their website!
