BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A trip to Wal-Mart turned into a trip to the hospital for the Templeton family. A scorpion from Mexico found its way into a box of watermelons at the Wal-Mart in Barboursville.

William Templeton says his daughter, Megan, was in the produce department picking out a watermelon Sunday afternoon. The scorpion stung her finger and then hung on. She had to shake her hand to get the scorpion to let go.

William says store managers were very helpful. They even helped him catch the scorpion. He took his daughter to Cabell Huntington Hospital to see if she is allergic to the sting.

I am interested in the scorpion if you want to get rid of it. I have two emperor scorpions right now. I have one male and one female. My female is pregnant. I work at the barboursville walmart if you would like to contact me.

Hey Steve, I know that the family received numerous calls from the media and the news asked to come to them. As for ever hearing from them again, well that comment tells me that you don't even know them. And the point of the story was a scorpion in WV, which is not normal for the area. As for people out west laughing at WV, well thats ok. WV laughs at them all the time.

Posted by: Mature on May 28, 2008 at 09:45 AM
You people make me laugh!! Makeing fun of this situation that happened to this girl. I mean really how imature can you all be. If this happened to you or your family you all would be right there on the news too. And to the Wal Mart Shopper you said maybe they should give the girl and her family a umbrella and be done with it. Maybe they should give you one for being so imature and childish to write what you wrote. GROW UP!!!!!

Posted by: Family Friend on May 28, 2008 at 09:37 AM
I have know this family for awhile. I was so glad to hear Megan was alright. As for people bashing the family, you have no idea what a wonderful family this is. This was something out of the norm (in WV)that happened to an ordinary person. So what if she wants to tell her story on the news. Both her parents are good people. Her dad works for the sheriffs department and her mom for ems. Remember this next time you call police or ambulance. It might just be on of the members of a family you felt the need to bash in your time of need. All because people can not stand a 12 year old girl wanting to be on TV. Ride it out Megan!

I would sue wwalmart. They have the money. The company itself gets a tax break. The man that owns Walmart is like the third richest man in America and dont you all know that they are cheap when it comes to helping out with charities. I say sue them......Let that little girl get her college education paid for. I need to go play in watermelons.

Posted by: a friend on May 28, 2008 at 08:02 AM
Let them enjoy this 15 min. of fame. They are a wonderful family. Most of you ppl have no clue as to what they are going to do. They havent mentioned sue to anyone. And the reason Bill wasnt upset, is because he knows that a sting is like a Bee sting. You people are way to "sue happy".

Posted by: Steve on May 28, 2008 at 07:00 AM
Why are people saying that the family didn't go to the local media themselves but that the media followed them to the hospital ? Who called the media and told them to go to the hospital...THE FAMILY did. The have appeared numerous times on local and national tv news programs and have said they contacted the media themselves. People in the western states are laughing at WV over this one, since they deal with scorpions everday, like we deal with flies. The Templeton family 15 minutes of fame is winding down, so hopefully we won't hear from them every again.

Posted by: Wal*Mart Shopper on May 28, 2008 at 02:21 AM
Wow, the comments on here almost burned my computer screen. I think Tony C. should give the girl and each family member an umbrella and be done with it. Oh, don't forget to vote this November too!

Hello, I want to say that the post by "richard" was a prank. I did not know that posting that could get him in trouble so I am sorry. What I was mearly trying to do was show how lawyers are scum and how everyone wants to sue. I apoligise for doing that and will no longer do stuff like that again. It was childish of me to do as such. Well all I have to say is SORRY and I shall never post a posting like that again, it was a joke but still.

You know, this reminds me of a story a long time ago when I first came to America. I had gotten away from my native Scotland and was so happy to see de statue of liberty. Now as I see on the news and in the papers I see stuff. I see lots of stuff that makes me lose my smile. I want to regain my smile that I had when I seen lady liberty in 1932 when me and my family set foot on US soil. I dont see why people do what they do when they do it. I know people care but they dont want to show it anymore they would rather chill and do what they is doing. It is a bitter shame that it has come to this. I know that when I was here it wasnt. Now it is and I dont see why because people in America need to care and show love and respect but they just want to do it and it sickens me cause that is me and not what it should be. I wish people would learn that it is that way and can be changed but people dont want it, you know?

Posted by: Old Time Farmer on May 28, 2008 at 12:05 AM
You know that is why you should buy from your local markets. When I take shipments to the market to be sold, I can assure you that they are free of any scorpions! It might be a little more expensive then Wal-Mart but it will keep you from being bitten. Also, to the family.... SUE THEM! SUE-SUE-SUE! Then take the money and buy gas, and spend the rest of it back at wal-mart.

Posted by: To Wal Mart Manager on May 28, 2008 at 12:01 AM
why would anyone want to go to the waverly store?

Posted by: EMPLOYEE on May 27, 2008 at 10:45 PM
Richard, YOU are what is wrong with this country, and to the "Wife of Wal-mart Worker" tell your husband to find another job then, but first you must turn in your 10% discount card and not get any more bonus checks and not have stock options and don't forget about your 401k for your RETIREMENT, Health Insurance unless you are proud to be on the MEDICAL CARD. Every company sells imported goods and just because Walmart is good at it they get talked about. Wal-Mart is trying very hard to make the world a better place, they are trying to make it cheaper on us(unlike the oil companies) and trying to make the world a GREENER place by working hard to better the environment with their Sustainability Program. This is not about suing or "Buying American" this little girl had a mishap that could have happened to anyone and THANK GOD she is OKAY! Now she has a pet scorpion and is probably the most popular girl in her school. Can't it end at that?

Posted by: The Wilsons on May 27, 2008 at 10:07 PM
We lived in S.E. Oklahoma and had scorpions in our house all the time. My oldest daughter was the only one that was ever stung. She was six at the time. It took us a very long time not to look over every speck in the carpet and floor and hope it was not a scorpion. We could not get rid of them through extermination. We tried.

Whoever said get over this story already, needs to move on. I for one am glad to hear about it and I doubt highly they are going to all the news station reporting it, if other news stories do report it, I am sure the news is the one who went to them. If you don't like reading about it or watching it, then don't. Simple as that. I also agree that I have not heard these people say anything about wanting to sue anyone. I am glad the little girl is fine. Also if they did sue, which is not anyone's business, than so be it. I know when I go to walmart and buy anything like that, I will have an employee reach into the crate, I sure won't anymore.

I remember American-produced beef being recalled many times over E. Coli contamination and that sometimes it had made people sick. Why don't we just blame God for letting all this bad stuff happen, instead of just praying to him in our times of weakness and desparation.

Posted by: to allison on May 27, 2008 at 09:32 PM
The facts are straight sweetie. I'm close to a District Manager there, they are NOT allowed to say Marry Christmas to their so called "guests" maybe you're looking on a spoof website? Ever think of that? LOL..... Trauma? she was gigglying about it on tv, I really wouldn't call it trauma? Getting shot or being in a bad car wreck would be trauma.

Posted by: Billy Hill on May 27, 2008 at 09:26 PM
Actually, I took a good look at the scorpion and I don't think it was a from Mexico. By the way it held it's tail, it appeared to be one of the new breed of vicious taliban scorpions probably planted by terrorists in an effort to crush the Wal-Mart empire. I'm glad the little girl is fine.

Posted by: Decent Attorney on May 27, 2008 at 09:14 PM
TO Richard W. Campbell Attorney at Law your posting is an unethical soilicitation of business likely violates the Ohio or any rule of professional conduct. Perhaps you should explain what standard of care Walmart violated by not checking for scorpions in their merchandise. Are you really suggesting it is forseeable that anyone would be injured by a scorpion in merchandise at Walmart or any other place of business. It's parasites like you that give lawyers a bad name. Perhaps someone should file a complaint about you.

I can't beleive this nonsense made the national news. I've been stung by scorpians a half dozen times or so, and have yet to call a press conference. You handwringers may wish to grow a testicle. Thanks.

Posted by: YOU on May 27, 2008 at 06:24 PM
You cant sue fot that! Is WalMart suppose to pick through EVERY single box to see whats in it? How bout they sue the Mexican who packed them? Better yet, maybe someone brought in their pet scorpion and did it on purpose? Wow, people in WV who are so sue happy are what makes the state look so bad! Thats why I moved away the first chance I got!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 27, 2008 at 05:36 PM
Im a salesman for a major watermelon farming oranization in the southwest. What is disappointing to me is that WalMart is carrying Mexican fruit when there is domestic product available to them at the same prices. Im not anti WalMart (all grocery stores do it). I supply most major chainstores, including WalMart, in some fashion. I cannot say with 100% certainty that an incident like this could not happen with our product, but I can say it never has. In the last 10 years we have shipped over 1 million of the same bins this little girl had her hand in when she was stung. The USDA has rules governering our growing practices and shipping facilities that do not apply to our Mexican counterparts. I would call this incident extremely rare, but even more avoidable with produce grown in the USA. My heart goes out to the little girl, I have grown up in the desert and have been stung several times myself (but never in our growing, packing, shipping facilities or in our packages themselves!

Most of you ppl have issues! If you would ENJOY life, you wouldn't always be SO negative!

Posted by: Richard C on May 27, 2008 at 02:19 PM
I think that we need to look at the real issue here. Wal-Mart is loaded with cash as we all know. The girl suffered trauma from this incident and will never be the same again. Her dad needs to bring a lawsuit up against Wal-Mart. In my experiences dealing with big organizations, I believe Wal-Mart would cave in and try to settle outside of court. Her father could ask that Wal-Mart pay for trauma that was caused by their neglience and also could ask that they pay the court cost. I believe a outside settlement would be in the best interest for both partys. I ask that if her dad reads it, to call my office. My name is Richard W. Campbell, Attorney at Law. I am located in Portsmouth, Ohio. My number is online so please feel free to look it up. I hope that you and your daughter are ok!

Megan is fine.....I work at WM and at that location as a mater of fact. She wasn't even upset when she left. It was more a precaution in case she was allergic. Scorpions are not dangerous unless you are allergic. Much like a bee sting. As for importing watermelons. They are not in season around here. Also we don't grow alot of thing (bananas being one), that we buy at walmart so alot of things are imported. Not just by wal mart but by all stores that sell produce.. or any product for that matter. USA shipped all these jobs oversees then buys back its products. Its not a wal mart thing its a USA thing. Bring back our jobs, bring back our products....simple as that.....

Posted by: Anonymous on May 27, 2008 at 12:57 PM
This family has said nothing of sueing anyone. Her parents are hard working and LOVE their jobs. As for you Maxine, they didnt go to the local news, they followed them to the hospital. They did one interview on this station. Apparently your the one that needs to get over it. This is something everyone needs to be aware of. My 3 year old had her hands in the same watermelon box just an hour or so before that. We as the public need to be made aware of the possibility of getting stung by something when we reach in a produce box. And the only people saying they are sueing is the people making comments. The Templetons will not sue. Walmart will pay the doc bills...end of story. They arent even mad.

Posted by: Friend on May 27, 2008 at 12:26 PM
Hey Maxine, first of all they did not go to any news stations. They came to her and they asked to talk to her. Why don't YOU shut up and let the 12 year old tell her story. Oh by the way this family as of this date has asked for nothing from Walmart, except for them to check the shipment so someone else did not get stung. Change your channel if you don't like the news.

Posted by: Max on May 27, 2008 at 12:21 PM
Walmart purchases produce from a produce wholesaler. It is the wholesalers responsibility to check for the little critters and not Walmart. We all want to hate Walmart for selling foreign made products, but that is where they have to buy them from. Nike, Levi's and other major companies have moved their production plants out of the USA, but I don't hear everyone talking about a boycott of these companies. When Walmart started building stores anywhere and everywhere, most products were MADE IN AMERICA, now is 2008, very little products are made here. Even my computer that I am using now, was made in Twaian. I purchased it at Best Buy and was told they have very very few computers made in the USA to sell to their shoppers.

Posted by: $$$$$$$$$$$$ on May 27, 2008 at 11:49 AM
Well, you know, after reading others comments, I now change my original opinion. I originally just said to sue. But, now I am going to say SUE walmart, and the scorpion. You can sue on a number of things. One sue them for importing non-local produce(that will set a precedent), and you can also sue for negligence, for failing to provide their patrons with a safe environment in which to purchase watermelons. Importing scoprpions is illegal too, you got to have a license to do that. "they didnt know" you said. Well, the guy driving the oldsmobile didnt know he had crack under is carseat either, likely story. This is ll part of the illegal mexican immigrants trying to take over the country. First they start with young watermelon lovers, next the spinach eaters. "WATCH OUT, Popeye" OH, what am I telling him for, he can handle himself. Uhcyuckcyuckcyuck. You might even want to sue some posters, that said you cant sue, they just caused you more pain and suffering. Deflating your hope

Posted by: allison on May 27, 2008 at 11:34 AM
let's not start the target rumors again. go to snopes.com and type target into the search box. they are not french owned, they'll let anyone say 'merry christmas', they support veterans. before we accuse, shouldn't we have our facts straight?

Posted by: ohioan on May 27, 2008 at 11:25 AM
Glad the little girl is ok, but still wondering where are all these people are coming up with her family suing Wal-mart. It doesn't say that here. Maybe too many speculations. Glad she's ok.

Posted by: booger on May 27, 2008 at 11:06 AM
Wow Maxine. I hope you get stung by a scorpion. Then we'll all turn our heads and say "Wish she would shut up, I'm sick of her"

Posted by: Anonymous on May 27, 2008 at 10:55 AM
i would sleep just fine with an extra 2 million $$$. But on the side note, watermelons aren't really in season right now, i mean...its just the end of may. How old was she? she could of been 25 or older for all we know.

Posted by: Chick on May 27, 2008 at 10:47 AM
LOL! Sue Wal*Mart that'll make what happened disappear. It was a mistake so they won't get anything, that doesn't take a pro to figure out. Her father on tv didn't seem so upset about it on the news the other night, I just think so of you need something to gripe about when you know yourself you'll be in Wal*Mart later looking for a way to get money also, probably through another reptile. GET A LIFE! I hope this girl is ok and has fun with it at school when she take it to show her classmates.

As if grocery shopping wasn't painful and expensive enough already. I feel like I get stung in the wallet every time I go to Walmart!

To Maxine, let the kid have her 15 mins of fame. You would do the same if it happened to you.

Posted by: Julie on May 27, 2008 at 09:26 AM
I think this is a very touchy event. I will not let my son touch the watermelons any more so that I can be sure this will not happen to my kid. Sympathy is expressed to this family, and I hope the little girl is doing well. I hope she has a speedy recovery.

Posted by: Kevin on May 27, 2008 at 09:10 AM
Sue for everything you can get. Remember the Walmat that used to be made in America? Now you can't buy anything at Walmart that is made in America. Walmart is the reason for the high gas prices. Now all of these foreign countries have a middle class and have cars, instead of bicycles. Higher demand for gas means higher gas prices. The more we buy from Walmart the more jobs and more successful other countries become.

Posted by: Debbie on May 27, 2008 at 08:36 AM
Wow, I got strawberreies and melons that day there, luckily no watermelons.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 27, 2008 at 08:23 AM
Many years ago my cousin worked at a Dept. store on Rt. 60 Htgn, where gabriel's bros was, a customer was trying on a coat and put her hand into the pocket and almost got bitten from a rattlesnake. It can happen at any time. Anywhere. Walmart should pay her medical and apoligize and give her a little shopping card, but to sue is stupid. Have we grown into a money hungry society. I still want to sleep at night with the decisions I make.

Posted by: Maxine on May 27, 2008 at 08:14 AM
Okay WalMart, please give this family a $50 gift card so they will shut up and go away. Be thankful that you daughter is okay and quit going on all the local tv stations and doing newspaper interviews to tell your story.

Posted by: Joe on May 27, 2008 at 08:02 AM
It was probably trying to get to her debit card so it could illegally use it back in Mexico.

Posted by: Nicole on May 27, 2008 at 07:33 AM
I am glad to hear that the girl is ok after getting stung by the scorpion. I guess what most people don't realize is that there are scorpions in the US not just Mexico so the same incident could happen if it was shipped from somewhere in the US and the US also has baby rattlesnakes. These creatures don't realize what they are getting into when they slither or walk into these shipments. For all you sue happy people you are part of the reason why these stores have to raise there prices. What ever happened to people taking responsibility for there own actions.

Posted by: Chris on May 27, 2008 at 07:27 AM
Its really sad that all people think about when something happens is SUE! And the ones that say it most are on Welfare or Scammers that have nothing to do besides think of ways to get money. I can tell you this, if they do sue they wont get much. Maybe 3000 if lucky! I have a lawyer in my family and he told because everyone sue's these days you have to be fighting for your life or mangled to get anything. Get a life people.

Posted by: Hummm on May 27, 2008 at 07:05 AM
What if a bee stung her her in wal mart? Could you still sue. I think this story is getting so much attention, because we do not have scorpions in this area. People in Arizona would laugh at us.

Posted by: David on May 27, 2008 at 06:42 AM
Why sue walmart that could have happen anywhere where they sell watermelons and things of the nature people are to sue happy these days come on now think about it!!

WHILE ALL OF YOU MAKE SILLY COMMENTS AND LAWSUIT THE QUESTION IS WHO ARE YOU GOING TO FILE AGAINST AND ON WHAT GROUNDS,THE SCORPION/FOR NOT KNOWING THAT IT WAS NOLONGER IN ITS NATURAL ENVIROMENT. AS SOCIATY AND HUMAN POPULATION GROWS WE AS HUMANS ARE MORE EXPOSED TO THE WILD NOT SO MUCH THAT THEY HAVE ENTERED OUR ENVIROMENT BUT THAT WE HAVE ENTERED OR DISTURBED THERES IN SOMEWAY IT IS PART OF NATURE.

to chick just to let you know Wal Mart is a Monopoly they take jobs from our area and put small businesses out of of business. I shop at wal mart to but its because i have no other choice. Also there are no big businesses that say merry christmas anymore because to many people get offended so they all say happy holidays. i say sue walmart the less the better. do some research and you'll see this is why america is the way it is big business take over and make the rich richer and poor more poor. Other than that this was a bizarre story i would never expect something like that to happen in such a prestigess place as walmart lol

I'm sure it was just an accident. and to "wife or walmart worker" why are you complaining about WalMart? They are paying your spouse and I'm sure you don't complain about the paychecks. Get over yourself. I like Wal Mart and that it where I shop 95% of the time. They have cheaper groceries than some places and cheaper items. I guess we could all shop at Target and support whatever foreigners are running that store. I mean for heavens sake they aren't even allowed to tell their "guests" Merry Christmas so keep on shopping there. You people need to get over it, it was a mistake and any kind of bug can get into any kind of fruit. Go ahead and blame Wal*Mart for the Locusts too. GEEZE!

People need to boycott Wally World. The biggest part of their products come from some foreign country. Hard to tell what you pack home that's crawled into the produce you buy there! Have you ever noticed that their meat is nasty tasting? It's more like "mystery meat"! Hard to tell what country that stuff comes from and what kind of standards they use in preparing it! Check this out: www.snopes.com/photos/food/chinachicken.aspI'd be very careful what I purchased there, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! I no longer shop there, I'd soon pay double than to try to get through the over crowded aisles and long lines!

I can remeber about 10-15 years ago when Wal-mart sold ONLY American products. They had huge signs posted in the Lay-a-way departments saying they carried only 100% American Made merchandise. Goes to show you how far big companies would stoop to save a buck. Best of luck to the little girl.

Why can't we grow enough of our own watermelons. We don't need to buy any produce outside our country. Can we not even feed our own people?

Posted by: John on May 26, 2008 at 10:03 AM
Buy American??? Sure , we can dothat, will you do without your watermelon until they come in season here? Didn't think so. Thats why we import such things as fruit, we want it ALL YEAR ROUND !

My god...where is the compassion for the girl and her family.....that would certainly terrify any family....not all people sue at the drop of a hat...yes walmart sure could sell american...but alot (not all) want three times the price just simply of the greed we have here in the states...I believe in making a living too...but not off just one sell

I used to work for a company that imported a lot. You would be surprised at what you can find dead or alive in those bulk containers. I have real issues with Wal-Mart and their practices but this is wide spread and only the consumer can boycott foreign products and lack of inspection. My best wishes for the girl and her familly.

scorpions are so DANGEROUS they will kill you if your not carefull .

Should be lawsuit for buying outside the USA instead of local farmers as much as for hurting a little girl. Hope the little girl doesn't have to suffer much.

I don't think quality control has anything to do with it. A bug could crawl into a box of watermelons coming from Florida just as much as one coming from Mexico. It's not like a box of cereal or something that comes sealed, watermelons come in wood crates or boxes that are not completely sealed.

don't they check stuff they have shipped?

Posted by: gene on May 26, 2008 at 06:54 AM
if chinamart would buy AMERICAN instead of foreign this would not happen.

Posted by: wiley on May 26, 2008 at 06:36 AM
Thats why Wal-Mart needs to sell USA products. A lot tighter quality control. When will they ever learn.

Say, was that the same Aunt Maybell who was looking for the Phoenix Mars Landing? If so, dude she has had a rough life! So glad the chicken cured her. Glad to hear Aunt Maybell is doing well. Really happy the young girl is fine.

One time my Aunt Maybell (refer to mole story) was at Hecks and bought some apple cider vinegar to drink for her tism. She didn't pour it into a glass she just drank straight from the jug. Two days later she grew a huge mole on her chin. Upon further inspection of the jug, she discover a pickled scorpion originating from Maracco.

Ouch. Hope the little girl is okay. I hate bugs. I probably would have had a heart attack or been sick just from thinking it was a scorpion!

Just goes to show....if our retailers sold produce from local farmers this could have been avoided.
