CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Some wanted Barack Obama. Most wanted Hillary Clinton. Some even tried to suggest an endorsement for one-time Republican presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee.

WSAZ.com reviewed hundreds of emails and letters sent to West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, one of the hundreds of people across the country with the coveted yet much maligned role of superdelegate to the Democratic party. The emails and letters started arriving in early January as it became apparent superdelegates would play a bigger role in deciding the presidential nominee for the Democratic party.

Governor Manchin's office received more than 400 emails and letters about the process. 73% of the letters that supported one particular candidate were for Clinton. Ironically, that percentage closely mirrors that of the results of the West Virginia primary, which Clinton won with 69% of the vote.

Out of Staters Speak Up

More people living out of state tried to influence the governor's vote as a superdelegate than those living in West Virginia. 52% of the emails and letters came from other states.

Clinton supporters wrote the governor from 27 different states, while supporters from 26 states wrote on behalf of Obama. California had the most letters for both candidates. Four letters came to the governor from London, England in which supporters of Clinton encouraged the governor's endorsement.

57% of the correspondence in support of Obama came from out of state, while Clinton had a near 50-50 split of in-state support compared to out of state support. (128 of her 258 support letters came from West Virginians)

Pre-Teen Donor Included in Emails

The letter writers included Dalton Hatfield, a fifth grader from Pike County, Kentucky, who made national headlines for selling his bicycle and video games to raise more than $400 for Mrs. Clinton's campaign.

Hatfield wrote the governor on May 19th and asked him to support the state's popular vote and endorse Clinton.

Manchin's Response

Many of the emails returned from the governor's office indicated the governor would endorse the candidate who won the popular vote in West Virginia's primary.

Many citizens received the following standard response:

Thank you for your recent email regarding my vote as a superdelegate in the Presidential election. I am planning on waiting until after the outcome of the West Virginia primary. At that time, I will cast my vote for the candidate who wins the popular vote in West Virginia.

I am happy to see that you have taken an interest in our country's election process.

    Sincerely,

    Joe Manchin III
    Governor of West Virginia

On Friday, June 6th, Governor Manchin endorsed Obama and not Clinton, the winner of the popular vote in the state.

Manchin told WSAZ.com he made his decision only after getting a blessing from Clinton on Thursday, June 5th. On that day, Manchin says he spoke with Mrs. Clinton, former President Bill Clinton and Obama within a short time span.

"She says I'm going to announce and I'm going to support Barack Obama. I'm asking respectfully that all my supporters and friends in West Virginia would unite because the challenges we have to change this nation are bigger than any one person. We are going to be together. I said Hillary do you mind if I say what you're saying here so people would know this is your request. She said no. So that's what I did," Governor Manchin told WSAZ.com.

Upset at the Process

Some writers expressed concerns about the Florida/Michigan delegates, the superdelegate process and the governor's comments on how popular vote should count in the equation.

Many of those letters did not endorse either candidate specifically, but an analysis of those "process" letters by WSAZ.com reveals more Clinton supporters based on the argument.

Not Everyone is in the Know

While many people had detailed reasons in their letters for why the governor should support one particular candidate, not everyone brushed up on their political knowledge.

A correspondence from Hurricane, WV, indicated the voter was so upset with the endorsement of Obama from United States Senators Jay Rockefeller and Robert Byrd and West Virginia Congressmen Nick Rahall and Allan Mollohan, that he would never vote for them again. Rahall and Mollohan do not represent Putnam County.

The governor received a few letters from people in May upset for his endorsement of a candidate.

One woman wrote, "you look like a puppet on a string in your endorsement of that horrible Senator from NY, Hillary Clinton."

Another wrote on May 20th, "I am disgusted at the thought of you, going against the W.V. voters. You choose to endorse Obama even after the people have spoken."

The governor did not endorse until June 6th.

Some even perpetuated the myth that Obama is Muslim. A man from West Virginia wrote to Governor Manchin in late March to say, "I say send this Muslim where he belongs and it is not the White House!!!!"

In late January, one person wrote the governor to suggest a cross party endorsement of Mike Huckabee. A few days later, another writer requested the endorsement of Mitt Romney.

Not everyone even knew they were discussing the superdelegate issue with Governor Joe Manchin of West Virginia. One of the letters, from Altamonte Springs, Florida, greeted Governor Bredesen. Phil Bredesen is the governor of Tennessee.

Manchin: Process needs to change

In the wake of the national attention on superdelegates, Governor Joe Manchin says the process needs to change. He is encouraging other Democratic party officials to require superdelegates to hold off on their endorsements of candidates until after the primary election season is over entirely.

"I've always said let's go through the whole process," Manchin told WSAZ.com.

Timeline of Obama Endorsements

February 29th - Jay Rockefeller
March 6th - Nick Rahall
May 13th - West Virginia Primary
May 19th - Robert Byrd
May 29th - Alan Mollohan
June 6th - Joe Manchin

I never received a reply back. Also, Manchin didn't endorse anyone until Hillary dropped out.

Debbie, can you provide any sort of link to what you are trying to suggest? I've looked at his Illinois voting record and kind find what you are saying. Maybe send me the chain e-mail you got and I can research it for you to debunk it.

Posted by: Indio on Jun 25, 2008 at 03:59 PM
Debbie, check into the many absences of Hillary in the Senate. She hasn't even voted much at all for the past year. She has neglected her constituents in NY while trying for her personal goal to be prez. Many of you would crucify her for not bowing down to the will of her constituents.

Posted by: jim on Jun 24, 2008 at 01:01 PM
McCain is too old. He should be a greeter at Walmart.

Posted by: Ashley on Jun 17, 2008 at 12:33 PM
Tyrone>> While I appreciate your view, please learn grammar. You will attract nothing but negative comments when you type in rhyme with poor grammar. I have not yet dedicated my vote to Obama or McCain. I'm not a republican or democrat. Each candidate has positives and negatives to their respective campaigns. That said, I think governor Manchin made the correct decision. On June 6th, a vote for Clinton would have been moot. Obama had already done the impossible by obtaining to number of delegates needed to win the democratic nomination. A further vote for Clinton would have served as nothing more than a party divider. I think if democrats want to win the election in November, now is not the time to split hairs. I think this is one more example of WV citizens doing what they do best: complain.

Oh and Buck check his Illinois voting record, maybe you should have yours taken away

Posted by: Debbie on Jun 17, 2008 at 11:42 AM
Waiting, I don't buy into any of that nonsense about Obama, however I do know that on many important issues, he votes "present" instead of taking any stand at all, and I heard him say that those who want our borders tightened and illegal immigration stopped he said "they're just afraid of the unknown" Of course McCain isn't going to do anything about it either. I'm waiting for you guys to tell me what Obama has done or will do that makes him a good choice. He's already said he isn't going to radically change the Iraq strategy, he said that himself. So what makes him the better candidate?

Posted by: Waiting... on Jun 17, 2008 at 12:41 AM
I'm still waiting on someone to prove any of their pathetic attempts at discrediting Obama. Show me some proof he doesn't say the pledge, is a muslim, hates whites, or is a terrorist. Show me any Bible verse that references Obama or forever hold your peace.

Here's Obama's voting record. I'm not sure what Heather was suggesting. http://obama.senate.gov/votes/109/ Maybe she should have her right to vote taken away for her poor research skills.

Posted by: Truthiness on Jun 16, 2008 at 11:13 AM
Everyone does realize that Obama has held elected office starting in 1997, 3 years longer than Hillary who was elected in 2000 with no experience other than forgiving Bill for his many indiscretions. Giving her "political experience" for being the First Lady is laughable. She was busy baking cookies and reading to kids. The name Rodham is also German and they killed millions of Jews. Face it--Hillary lost. This site suggests that Rodham may also be of Mooslim origin. http://www.wikiality.com/Rodham

Posted by: Heather on Jun 16, 2008 at 08:59 AM
Oh, and WSAZ, why are you posting all the incorrect letters to Manchin? Why not post more quotes from some of the more intelligent letters to Manchin? The letter from Byrd said that he wasn't going to discuss his vote and that he thanked me for being interested. I am now ashamed of Hilary. She should have honestly pulled a Lieberman and ran Independent. She sold out her supporters for an inexperienced man who doesn't vote for or doesn't vote at all for the issues he builds his campaign on. Check his voting records-not his skin color or religion. I am ashamed of people voting purely on race or gender. You should have your right to vote taken away because you are too ignorant to change the future of this country.

Posted by: Heather on Jun 16, 2008 at 07:37 AM
Paul, actually read the book, ok. You can't even spell it. He was talking about if Americans would turn on the already American muslims after 9/11. He was pretty much talking about hate crimes. The quote (which ignorant people use out of context) doesn't directly say that he is for Middle East and against America. I am a Clinton supporter (but not anymore since she endorsed Obama) and have yet to decide who I want to vote for.

Posted by: me on Jun 16, 2008 at 06:38 AM
hey people, it may or may not make a difference if we do or don't vote, but at least it gives us the right to complain and to at least attempt to make things better for ourselves and our kids. I think if we just "give up", we'll really be in trouble. There are more of us working folks than these rich politicians. Our country was built from people trying to make things better--instead of arguing with each other we need to be cohesive and stand together. I am sure that everyone agrees that gas is too much, food is too much, and our politicians are supposed to represent what the majority of the people want. I think all we want is a better, safer country, isn't it?

Travis, speak for yourself. I don't let fear run my life. I am a man of reason. When I hear a rumor I research for myself and have found that most of the rumors about Obama are lies. I have yet to find someone who can back up any of the lies they are spewing forth based on e-mails. Everytime I've challenged them they have nothing to say. I think they know that the rumors are lies and are just trying to mislead a very gullible public.

Posted by: Heather on Jun 15, 2008 at 10:41 PM
I wrote letters to ALL the reps and I am a WV resident. It pretty much boils down to this: We (as West Virginians) elect these representatives in hopes that they will TRUELY represent what WV wants. For the primaries, what WV wanted was Clinton. These representatives basically smacked 67% of WV voters in the face. So, who will you vote for in the general election. Rockefeller, Manchin, and Rahall are up for re-election. (I'm not 100% on Rahall, but I think he is)

Posted by: mountain man on Jun 15, 2008 at 09:38 PM
Funny that Old Bigin supports Nostradamus, but didn't address that fact that the Hillary supporters pawned the e-mail off as a biblical scripture. Old Bigin: "I'm a proud miner, but I don't read too much. Not much learnin' for me."

Posted by: budn on Jun 15, 2008 at 09:34 PM
Old Bigin, the first usage of redneck was those Scottish who rejected the Church of England. You are also right about miners later adopting the moniker in an effort to unionize. You fail to mention that today it is universally used to describe backwards thinking much like that you are currently displaying.

Posted by: To Anonymous - on Jun 15, 2008 at 07:54 PM
it is absolutely NOT TRUE that Obama refuses to say the pledge. Instead of believing hearsay or unsubstantiated e-mail forwards, why not do a little research and find out the TRUTH before spreading stupid lies and urban legends?

Posted by: Listen on Jun 15, 2008 at 07:53 PM
Dear Ann, Take a civics class. The "superdelegates" DO NOT decide for you. Each candidate gets the proportional number of votes that he or she won in the primary election; superdelegates make up only 20% of total votes. It is NOT the same as the electoral college, and people need to educate themselves on this.

Posted by: Neal Moore on Jun 15, 2008 at 07:37 PM
Why do SUPER DELEGATES even factor into the equation?? The popular vote expresses the will of the PEOPLE. That, and only that, should be the deciding factor of who the people want to lead our country. Super Delegates are nothing more than the party's way of circumventing the Constitution's primary premise of "Government of the people, by the people and for the people." Big business controlls the government by controlling the SUPER DELEGATES and the ELECTORIAL COLLEGE which in turn determines who will be our next president. The will of the people has been sacrificed to the will of big business by greedy, spineless politicians!!

Posted by: derr on Jun 15, 2008 at 03:00 PM
ann, might be that the u.s. was founded not as a democracy but as a federal constitutional republic. Have you heard of the Electoral College?

Posted by: read on Jun 15, 2008 at 02:59 PM
anonymous on june 15, maybe you should research a little more. Obama says the pledge of allegiance any day when the senate is in session and also has led the senate in prayer on numerous occasions. Why can't people read on their own to find this info out? The fake e-mail you are referring to was about not putting his hand over his heart during the national anthem. 75% of the nation doesn't do that either. Typically only vets and/or those over 50 do so.

I have never seen so much hate in this state, Everybody is so confused. I've lived here my whole life ,West Virginia has turned itself into a monster. It's quite a experience to see so much hate, whether it be on here or whoever you talk to. I believe that fear is fueling every last one of us.

Posted by: ky. mom on Jun 15, 2008 at 11:25 AM
I think that it is a shame that our votes no longer count..what makes the government think that a delegates vote would be more important then mine?? Did my vote not elect the delegates and super delegates to begin with?? I truely thought that Manchin, Rockefeller and Byrd were supportive of the WV voters but apparently West Virginians need to remember how little they are thought of the next time that these men are up for re-election...I am a born and raised democrate but come fall I guess I will be switching over to the republician side. It is so sad to think that we live in what should be the most educated country in the world but instead it is full of idiots...we might be called "rednecks" where we are from but we know good and well that Hillary would have came in a cleaned up the mess that was made. Her hubby might have made the mistake he did but that should have been left private..at least we were able to buy food and put gas in our cars when the Clintons were in the White House...

Posted by: Bob on Jun 15, 2008 at 09:09 AM
Everytime someone is not going to vote for Obama, he is a racist. Who is truly riding the race card? Obama wants to come in and punish the succesful. He may take a good look at himself. If people really want to move toward socialism and wealth distribution, vote for Obama. I like it where if you apply yourself, the sky is the limit. I am not waiting for government to make my way, that is the way of the weak.

Posted by: ann on Jun 15, 2008 at 07:52 AM

Posted by: cosmo on Jun 15, 2008 at 07:01 AM
Its funny how some politicians took so long to go the way of the first. It's almost to say if you don't go my way you will wish you had. It don't matter the whole bunch of them has lost my vote and support. You've got to be very clear on who you should vote for, not just because someone over you says so.

budn, do you know how rednecks got their name? It was citizens in large numbers that took up arms against oppression. They all wore a red scraf for identification purposes. They stood up against the coal companies and government under fire while being bombed and didn't give up. Millions of working families gained good wages and benifits for many years over, for what they done. You are dammed right i'm a red neck and proud of it, puss ! Nostradamus was right in a lot of things too, but what are you, a yellow t--d tamper making minimum wage?

I will not vote for Obama. And no Martin, black skin has nothing to do with it. How can I support a man whom doesn't support his country? The man refuses to state the Pledge of Allegiance. He is not a true American in my mind. The next 4-8 years will be a mess no matter who wins now. Bush has put us in a recession. And, neither Obama or McCain are worth the time in line to vote. Also, Martin, from a redneck, don't let your mouth out run your rear-end. You talk about the mouth breathers. Why would you attack someone on a comment board by calling them an idiot? What kind of impression are YOU making?

Mary, dear, I am here to inform you I AM A BLACK MAN!! Not so much racism here. Thank you for assuming that ALL black men and women are for OBAMA! My take - OBAMA DOES NOT HAVE THE EXPERIENCE IT TAKES TO FIX OUR COUNTRY, LET ALONE GET US OUT OF A WAR THAT'S KILLING OUR BRAVE MEN & WOMEN. HECK, HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A CHANCE OF WINNING THE ELECTION IN NOVEMBER! His only chance will be riding Hillary's skirt tail if she get's the VP nod. Pray, Clintoneers & Demorcrats... if we are lucky, someone will get something on Obama and he will not get the nomination. And back to you, Mary, open mouth...insert foot... just like Joe did!

How many are against Obama because of the "man from the east" e-mail that was attributed to the Bible, but it really from Nostradamus. You might be a redneck if you choose your candidate based on a false chain e-mail...

A black man wants to get us out of a ridiculous war and lower our taxes and you all can't see past the fact he is black. When he wins I hope you all move to Canada. And he isn't muslum, not that that matters...its just another example of how you mouth breathers are uneducated sloths.

I don't think it means a thing to vote because they will nominate whomever they want. The superdelegates. Whatever happened to voting being confidential? You cannot even get a straight answer to any questions at the polls because its illegal for the volunteers to answer your questions. I'm guessing that the first thing that obama will do if elected will is to raise the taxes. He has voted yes to raising taxes 94 times.

Posted by: Kyle on Jun 14, 2008 at 06:00 PM

How many of you are turned off by Obama because you think he is the antichrist based on false emails including one that mentions "a man from the east?" That verse isn't even in the Bible, it's a prediction by Nostradamus. I guess some think he's the 13th disciple since they are so quick to pass the email and false rumor along. This is why we need need to go back to literacy tests in order to be able to vote. Even Hillary has now endorsed Obama and her "followers" won't give it up. Where's Hillary now? In her mansion and not with anyone wearing a blue collar.

Posted by: To Mike on Jun 14, 2008 at 09:32 AM

This is crazy,we have people in office that could care less what the people have to say. Old Joe the Gov. is the only one who waited until the people had there voice. Even though Byrd and the other clowns waited until after the primary they already had made up there minds. The reason these pigs voted Obama was because they don't want to see a woman in the white house. So now we have to put up with Mccain or little bush for 4 yrs, because I can tell you now there is no way Obama is going to win the general election.

I am sick of people like Mike thinking you must be racist if you are not for Obama. The man has two years experience as a senator and one of those years has been spent on the campaign trail. Our country is in serious trouble and we need someone with more experience. I'm sure Obama is a fine man but some of us don't believe he is ready for the presidency. Many of us are hurt that our elected leaders turned on us and gave super delegate votes to Obama when we clearly thought Clinton was better suited for the job.

Posted by: Rhonda on Jun 14, 2008 at 01:08 AM
Jim, I beg to differ with you. The vote that Manchin gave when he stepped into the voting booth was his .The super delegate vote was the vote that West Virginians trusted him to represent them with. He implied that he was waiting until the primary was over so he could vote our way. He actually just rode the fence until he won the primary and then gave us a slap in the face. Mike, just because Obama is black doesn't mean you are a racist if you like Hillary. By the way he "won" the nomination. Who is the uneducated one around here?

Posted by: to Mike on Jun 14, 2008 at 12:10 AM
Regarding "uneducated". You may want to look up the definitions of 'one' and 'won'. Even though they sound the same, they are different.

to mike on june 13th @7:36 hahahahaha you call someone uneducated and you say Obama ONE the nomination!!!! I can't believe these were the two best people this country had to offer for a democratic president I would rather go stand beside the highway close my eyes and pick a random driver to vote for than eaither one of these lying clowns and has anyone ever figured out what change Obama is talking about?

Though I am not a West Virginian, I feel I am allowed to voice my opinion on this matter since I work in and shop in Huntington. I truly had high hopes for Manchin - beyond Governor of West Virginia. I could have seen him in a presidential race down the road. But if he totally disregards the voice of his people - his constituency, how can he be trusted? He even said he would vote as his state voted. That is crap & not worth the computer it was typed on! Sad really, West Virginians took a stand and the best candidate. Their governor covered his mouth, tilted his head to the side, in a low, barely audible voice, and said... "I'm with the black guy." How does it feel, West Virginia? Joe didn't even use KY for this one! Even Stickland politely said (or at least implied) "OH HELL NOBAMA!" (Like the way I said that? Hehe... No and Obama? Get it NObama?)I am amused, anyway. Enjoy that liquid gold you are squirting into your tank and out the exhaust. Obama? Oh we are so screwed.

Rhonda everyone should see this clearly. If our representatives can get by with what has been done our vote doesn't count any more.. That is a simple fact ! They want their yes man Obama in there so bad they will try anything... Now we have got to vote these people out or we have had it from now on.. The citizens opinion and will of the voters will mean nothing.

Scott Saxton...political pundit...that's cute.

Manchin doesn't have to vote for Hillary because you did. It is his vote! You voted and your voice was heard. If the democratic party could get behind a candidate, then his vote wouldn't even matter. If you want to blame anyone from the fact that mccain will likely become elected, then blame democrats that cannot support one candidate. Enjoy your $7 gas...you all have earned it.

Articles like these and some of these comments just feeds the claims that West Virginia is full of uneducated racists. Obama one the nomination, time to move on.

Joe is just trying to do some damage control. I don't believe this conversation with Hillary ever took place. She wanted as many delegates as possible to be on her record even though she knew she had lost. His word is not good anymore. I thought he was a good man until the WVU incident and the vote for Obama. His name has been thrown around as a possible VP so he chose to serve himself, not West Virginia.I don't know who he is running against in Nov. but they have my vote!

just goes to show how much our elected officials realy care about West Virginians.

Joe Manchin, just like Jay Rockefeller before him is using WV as a stepping stone to bigger things. Anyone who saw him when Mrs. Clinton was in town, well then again.....maybe no one did see him because all you could see was his legs and feet since he was so far up her butt. Only what's better for him is what matters the most.

Manchin is a weasel. Plain and simple. He will do anything to get to Washington, that is his ultimate goal. That's why he rode the fence until there was a clear winner. He care's nothing about the state of West Virginia, just his own personal gain.

It's not over til the fat lady sings!!! If the backgroud checks of Obama come out, the super delagates can change their minds. Right?

Joe you Endorsed whomever made you richer - the Obama Campaign while he is the democratic nominee he was not the choice of your people. I challenge the people of the state of WV to vote out all those who did not vote in the favoring of the citizens of the state no matter what excuse they used. Here is your list to defeat come November with the days they double crossed you as a voice in the election process. This DNC and RNC are getting out of hand by not listening to the voters. So it is time to bring about CHANGE and the CHANGE needs to be those who do not listen - you show them the door. Timeline of Obama Endorsements February 29th - Jay Rockefeller March 6th - Nick Rahall May 13th - West Virginia Primary May 19th - Robert Byrd May 29th - Alan Mollohan June 6th - Joe Manchin

.........and this would make anyone wonder what a piece of garbage he and his daughter have turned out to be,always the easiest route, always

Posted by: JPNWV on Jun 13, 2008 at 02:20 PM
Yes, I would have never guessed Manchin would have been spineless. I believe the Delegates & Super Delegates should vote for who their State votes for. So why vote the vote of the people doesn't matter. Our Politicians went for Obama while the majority of the people wanted Clinton.

The Governor has a legitimate response. If he spoke to Clinton and she in fact said to endorse Obama because she is going to drop out thats what he should have done. She knew that she could not win and the party needed to be brought back together.
