Two People Hurt in I-64 Accident Near Cross Lanes

Implementing a Plan to Divert Traffic During Accidents

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Several years ago, a plan was put in place to divert traffic when crashes tie up traffic. Since then, there have been some updates.

The West Virginia Division of Transportation still uses the digital message boards to alert drivers of any congestion ahead.

The DOT now goes by the two-hour rule. If they know that an accident is going to stop traffic for more than two hours, they implement a detour and work with law enforcement agencies to make it run as smooth as possible.

Now, with new technology, you can now learn about accidents and detours before even getting in your car.

This is all thanks to the 511 system. You can either call 511, check out the app or visit its web site to learn about any road issues in your area -- something that just wasn't possible when the diversion plan was first put in place.

“We just didn't have the ability to give information out quickly,” DOT spokesperson Brent Walker said. “We're able to provide them more information. They're able to know what's going on ahead.”

Every accident is different, so as for the detours -- they plan them on a case-by-case basis.

CROSS LANES, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Traffic was backed up for miles along Interstate 64 near Cross Lanes due to an accident Tuesday morning.

The accident happened just after 8 a.m. Tuesday in the eastbound lanes -- during a time when many commuters were headed to work.

Police tell that three cars were involved and two people were hurt in the accident.

I-64 eastbound was down to one lane in the area.

It took nearly an hour to clear the eastbound lanes and get traffic moving again.
