KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Joe Manchin, Robert Byrd, Jay Rockefeller… and Phillip “Icky” Frye? Maybe that last one doesn't quite roll off the tongue as a prominent democrat, but if you're John McCain it does.
The reason Phillip Frye got into politics was an affair he'd never imagined. That's because he accused his wife of having an affair with then governor bob wise.
Frye had his 15 minutes of fame as he ran for governor. But today the clock is ticking again. as Frye is back in the political spotlight.
He was a long shot for governor, but this democrat is ready to pull the trigger on an endorsement for Republican Senator John McCain.
At one time, Phillip Frye had the democratic ticket for governor in a tailspin. Some questioned his political sincerity. That's because he admitted he was running to be a nuisance to Governor Bob Wise, the man he accused of having an affair with his wife.
A list out Saturday has Frye listed as a prominent democrat reaching across the aisle to support the Senator McCain's effort to show he has bipartisan support.
We asked Senator McCain’s camp what makes up a prominent democrat, and they didn't give us specifics, but they did release a statement.
It says in part, "We appreciate the growing support we've received in West Virginia... They (supporters) join thousands of independents and Democrats who recognize that John McCain is the only candidate with the bipartisan record to deliver the change we need."
Frye told us today he is seriously considering a run for office in the future.
