WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSAZ) -- An army specialist from Putnam County is recovering from serious injuries he received while serving in Iraq.
Specialist Matthew Richardson's mother says he was shot in Baghdad on Monday. He was treated and sent to Germany for further assistance. Now, he's at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington.
We spoke with Matthew's mother, who is at his side at Walter Reed. His sister told WSAZ.com Sunday morning that doctors put a tube back in to help him breathe because of a collapsed lung.
The military is investigating what happened, but this was not a combat injury.
Matthew is a 2006 Hurricane High School graduate. He was a standout baseball player there.
