UPDATE @ 4:32pm
Fire investigators tell WSAZ.com that the house had no working smoke detectors. Two of the victims were found upstairs and the other two were found downstairs.

We're told Meyleigh was Lea Ann's granddaughter. They were visiting Colby and Sandi.

The investigation into what started the fire is continuing.

UPDATE @ 2:34pm
The Portsmouth fire chief has released the names of the victims:
- Colby Lynch, 41 of Portsmouth
- Sandi Schalit, 53 of Portsmouth
- Lea Ann Woods, 53 of Westerville, OH
- Meyleigh Snipes, of Westerville, OH (age not released, but she was a juvenile)

ORIGINAL STORY
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Portsmouth fire chief has confirmed that four people died in a downtown house fire Friday morning.

The chief also says that one of those killed was a young girl. She may be a pre-teen or even a young teenager. The others who died are two adult women and a man. They have not released their names.

The fire started at about 3:30 a.m. at a house in the 1500 block of 4th Avenue.

The fire is now out and the fire department has started its investigation. We know that the fire was contained to one bedroom and it had a lot of smoke. The rest of the house did not have fire damage.

A police officer drove by during his normal patrol Friday morning and was the first to notice the smoke and call for help.

A firefighter was also treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters did find a smoke detector. However, it was damaged and they may never know if it was working.

This is now the 12th fire fatality this year alone in Portsmouth.

WSAZ has a crew at the scene. Keep clicking on WSAZ.com for the latest information.

To answer Kathy's question, fire doesn't always totally engulf a house like you see in the movies. This fire was contained inside of one room. I am sure it had eaten all of the oxygen out of that room (fire feeds off of oxygen. Remember the movie "Backdraft"?), which is why it wasn't burning more fiercely. Two of the victims were in close proximity to the fire room and the other two were upstairs. As has been reported, all signs point to the fact that the smoke detectors were not working. More than likely, all of the victims died from smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide poisoning (which is a byproduct of smoke) while they were still asleep. As we have all learned through tragedy in the past few years, CO2 is odorless and tasteless. Thats why such a relatively small fire turned into something so horrific. It is such a sad thing that happened to this family. I just pray that others learn from this. Check your smoke detectors. Invest in a Co2 detector. The life you save might be your own.

May GOD give you strength in this terrible time of your life. May GOD give all involved with knowing and loving the victims strength and courage, and may GOD bless the firemen and policemen who responded and helped. MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND GIVE YOU STRENGTH AND COURAGE AND KNOWLEDGE TO DEAL WITH THIS TERRIBLE ACCIDENT.

What a horrible string of fires. Is this fire arson? My thoughts and prayers are with the family and the firemen who were there. God bless you.

I am so sorry for this poor family & the victims. Saw on WSAZ last night that two of them (including the young girl) were in town for another funeral so now it's a multiple loss & time of bereavement. Just so horrible. I still don't understand how on earth no flames were visable to anyone including the policeman who apparently smelled smoke & discovered it. WHY? Will they ever be able to find out I wonder because even the firemen seemed stumped on this one. If any firefighters are on here could you all explain why this is even possible to those of us who aren't familiar with how fires can differ? I was just never aware that such a thing could even happen so I am really curious. Just have never heard of one like this in my life. Regardless of how or why, four people are gone because of it and my heart aches for them and their family for their loss and for the loss of their other loved one. My deepest condolences and sympathy to all of them. You're in my prayers

What a tradgic loss. It seems like there have been way to many fires in our area..I wish there were tougher laws concerning smoke detectors in all residences. I know if you live in public housing they are manditory. Maybe insurances should give incenitives for families to help them be safer in their own homes. I know money is tight for everyone at this time, but lives are being lost...To many

To What?? This was not the 12th fire, this makes 12 people dead. There were 7 who died due to one fire, then 1 in another and now these 4. The 7 who died didn't all die at once, a 3 of them lingered and passed away as a result of injuries. My thoughts are with all who have experienced losses.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victims. Also, my prayers go out to the firefighters who were involved with this fire. To the firefighters, you are true heroes, thank you for all you do.

Another young person in Portsmouth loses their life this summer. We don't know why God allows this to happen, but what I do know is, we need to be ready to meet Him. It could happen to anyone of us at any time. My prayers are with the family and friends of this family.

does anyone know ho these people were because i might know them

If there is no evidence of foul play, then in a slow burn heavy smoke conditions I would be looking at any foam rubber products in the furnishing of the the room that would produce hydrogen cyanide gas in the combustion products. Older mattresses, and cushions on chairs, etc. that have the older foam products are known to produce this toxic and fatal gas when in a state of slow burn or smoldering conditions. There does not have to be a lot of fire damage for these conditons to occur. Although most are unaware, a smoulding fire in padded furniture can be extremely dangerous due to the products of combustion.
