KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) --It's been seven years since Melanie Metheny disappeared from Belle, but friends and family members say their search efforts are only getting stronger with time.

"We're out here looking for you every day and we won't stop," said her friend, Michele Mullins. "We won't give up till we get our answers."

Sheriff's deputies say Melanie dropped off her three young children at day care in 2006 and hasn't been seen since. She had just turned 21 years old.

Her van was found a few days later on Charleston's west side.

"She was a great mother and a great person," Mullins said. "You couldn't meet a better person."

Friends and family gathered in Coonskin Park Saturday at a picnic benefit for Melanie's Hope, a new foundation they started in her honor.

The foundation is meant to raise awareness about her case while also raising money for animals in need.

Melanie's mother, Debi Daniel, says her daughter had a passion for helping animals that her loved ones now want to continue.

"Any animal that she thought needed help or just thought needed a good home...she would take it in and take care of it herself," Daniel said.

Sheriff's deputies say they still get tips about Melanie's disappearance on a weekly basis, but they need more information.

If you know anything about the case, you're asked to call the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.

ORIGINAL STORY
CHARLESTON, W.Va., (WSAZ) -- A young mother has been mother missing without a trace for two years, so Melanie Metheny's young children helped host an event Saturday to prevent other families from feeling the same kind of pain.

Donna Harper is the grandmother of two of Melanie's young children.

"I tell the children that their mother is missing," Harper said. "And their mother may never come home. I think, 'was Melanie tortured?' I think lots of things. You really don't know until this happens to you."

Part of the Charleston Moose Lodge was turned into a safe haven for the event.

Kids had the opportunity to get fingerprinted, and other people had the chance to learn some self-defense moves.

Melanie Metheny was last seen dropping her children off at a daycare in Belle, W.Va.

Her van was found a few days later, but no trace of Metheny has ever been found.
