WASHINGTON (AP) - About 2 million Americans -- including some Ohioans -- are getting a raise today as a new federal minimum wage takes effect.

It's rising 70 cents, from $5.85 to $6.55 per hour.

Ohio is one of 23 states with their own, higher minimum wage. In Ohio, it's $7 an hour.

However, small Ohio businesses making less than $255,000 a year may pay the lower federal minimum to their employees. It also applies to 14 and 15-year-old workers in Ohio.

Is it really that low? Souldn't all of the states have the same minimum wage? Because Indiana's minimum wage was $6 and now it's $6.75 and I heard from other kids it's as low as $3 . . .

Why do they even waste time raising the minimum wage? All that ever does is raise the price of everything else. Why not spend the money instead on helping people afford a higher education. And to Amanda, good for you that you were able to go to college and get a job that has benefits. But don't assume that everyone out there who is working a crappy job for crappy pay is living off of the government. Medicaid is not easy to get. Most of the time it will only cover people on SSI, those who are pregnant (or recently had a child), single parents or children under the age of 18. Good luck if you don't fall in that catagory. Its not easy being broke. Its even harder being broke, sick, unable to afford to go to the doctor and still having to work everyday so your family can eat. And heaven help those out there who are single without kids. They can't get squat for government assistance.

Thats great- except I went to school and have a career. Minimum wage was not meant to live your entire life on. It keeps going up, while my pay stays the same. They are making the same as I do by the time ins, etc. is taken out of my check. Maybe I'll go to min. wage so I can get free health care and food stamps. It's great for people who need help and are trying- but don't spend a lifetime on it.

For those who are crying that it's not enough money. Then go to college, or a trade school, and better yourself.

YEA THEY MAY GET A RAISE BUT WHAT GOOD IS A RAISE WHEN THEY RAISE EVERYTHING ELSE ON YOU. YOU STILL WON'T HAVE ANY MONEY
