CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Charleston will soon be the home of the World's Strongest Man Competition.

City leaders announced Thursday Charleston will host the competition September 6-14.

Organizers were in Charleston last month looking at possible sites for the competition. They visited several areas including Magic Island, Kanawha Boulevard, and Coonskin Park.

Thursday the city announced the qualifying round will start September 6th at Magic Island. This part of the competition will also take place at the State Capitol, University of Charleston, and on the Kanawha Boulevard.

The finals will take place at Haddad Riverfront Park, Coonskin Park, Kanawha Boulevard, Appalachian Power Park, and at Yeager Airport. The finals will run from September 12-14.

The schedule is only tentative. We're told it could change.

Mayor Danny Jones says this will be a huge undertaking for the city, but a great family event that will be well worth it.

Organizers are trying to work with the Army National Guard to see if the contestants can pull a C-130 during the competition.

Charleston native Phil Pfister clinched the title of World's Strongest Man back in 2006. He also attended Thursday's press conference. He tells WSAZ.com that he's already training for the competition.
