SANDY HOOK, Ky. (WSAZ) -- As family farms in our area are on the decline and small farm tobacco production is cut way back, rural communities continue to look for new and creative ways to make some money.

That includes an agritourism bus that has been touring through eastern Kentucky. Organizers say the six-day, all-inclusive back road bus tour through Elliot, Carter, Morgan, Menifee and Wolfe counties will offer visitors Appalachian living history and heritage. They also hope it will provide some alternative income to farmers who now find their once profitable tobacco plants hanging in a museum.

"All the money will go back to the farmers," said Gwenda Adkins, a University of Kentucky extension agent.

Organizers say if the agritourism pilot project is a success, expect many more such tours next year. The bus tour runs six days – Sept. 29 through Oct. 4, and the $700 cost covers everything. For more information, call 606-668-3040.

I am happy to see that initiative is being taken to grow any type of business in rural Kentucky. I belive a farm that would open it's door's to wanna be small farmers to help let them learn the ropes would also be a great help to agritourism and the growth of rural farmland development.

honestly though, do you think anyone is going to pay$700? I am not being mean, but being realistic.

being a son of a long time family owned farm i think that more ways of introducing people to what a farmer does and works would give people a better education of just what a farmer goes through in a year starting with pplanting season to harvesting season and daily milking procedures and all the work and time in between all the other work that comes along with farming and raising a family it aint as easy as getting up and going to work for 8 hrs i know cuz when i ws growing up it was from daylight to dark most every day and then some days were even longer especially when growing season was at full swing people need to really understand what the importance of a farmer really is and how the small family farms are being forced into non existance because of these big corporate farmers that only worry about making a buck by growing chemical laced products to make them grow faster and forget quality and healthy products yep i am proud to be a hard working son of the traditional farmers
