SUMMARY OF EVENTS
From The Associated Press
MILTON, W.Va. (AP) - A fire has destroyed the Milton Flea Market, a loss that is expected to have a major economic impact on the Cabell County town.

The fast-spreading blaze at the U-shaped wood and metal structure was reported around 11 a.m. Wednesday. Most of the building collapsed and assistant Milton Fire Chief Steve Vititoe says ammunition in one of the booths went off.

No injuries were reported. The flea market is only open on weekends.

Every Cabell County fire department, along with some from neighboring counties, responded. One fire truck received significant damage while fighting the fire.

The venue opened in 1989 and grew to become one of the region's largest flea markets. More than 300 vendors sold antiques, collectibles, crafts and jewelry there.

Milton Mayor Betty Sargent estimates the market drew about 10,000 visitors each weekend.

Nina Roberts of Barboursville ran a candle shop there and lost up to $30,000 worth of inventory. She says she wasn't insured.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined.

UPDATE @ 5:40pm
Milton Flea Market owner Boyd Meadows spoke with WSAZ.com's Michael Wooten Wednesday afternoon. Meadows says he will rebuild the flea market on this site once the investigation and clean-up are finished.

UPDATE @ 3:26pm
We have learned that two sections of the flea market were not destroyed by fire. They were not attached to the main building. Click on the map to the right to see a larger view of the sections saved & destroyed. The saved sections are colored blue, and the sections consumed by fire are in red.

UPDATE @ 1:28pm
WSAZ.com's Dave Benton is also at the scene. He says the Milton Flea Market's construction was similar to a chimney laying in its side--and the fire just shot through it, destroying everything in its path. The building had wooden beams holding the roof up, and when those caught fire, they collapsed.

Dave says about 100 people are gathered near the scene. He says people are crying, and the scene is very emotional. A lot of people had a lot of time and money invested in market.

Tell us your stories and memories of the Milton Flea Market. Fill out our comment form below.

UPDATE @ 12:51pm
The Milton Flea Market is now reportedly destroyed by fire.

Milton's assistant fire chief, Steve Vititoe, tells WSAZ.com's Bill Murray that there are no injuries so far. He says the call first came in at 11:03 a.m. as a vehicle fire, but they haven't been able to find a vehicle. The fire started in the northeast part of the market.

Vititoe says every fire department in Cabell County is at the scene, including the City of Huntington. Crews from Putnam and Mason counties are also at the fire scene.

Route 60 is closed in both directions near the market. I-64 remains open at this time, but officials from the DEP are monitoring the air and smoke in the area to see if it needs to be closed.

Vititoe says there is no danger to people near the market, but everyone should keep away from the area.

He confirms that ammunition was going off in one of the booths in the southwest corner of the flea market.

Keep clicking on WSAZ.com for more information.

UPDATE @ 12:39pm
The smoke is being picked up by our 3D Doppler radar. (click on the thumbnail to see a larger image)

UPDATE @ 12:17pm
Cabell County's EMS director tells WSAZ that nobody was at the flea market when the fire started. The market is closed during the week.

I used to live around Ashland, KY and since the flea market first opened my family and I would make at least 2 trips a month up there to shop. The Toy Chest is where I normally stopped at but loved the variety throughout. My last trip was probably in 2006. I am very sad that this gem was destroyed but I do hope that it is rebuilt and that the merchants are able to locate elsewhere in the meantime. Good luck

I am sorry about the loss of the flea market in Milton. It is very sad.. But to those of you that are critizing the volunteer fire departments shame on u.... Some said that Huntington shouldnt have helped because they have their own to area to cover...Well I seem to recall when the Emmets building caught on fire they needed help from other fire departments and I am certain some of them were volunteers.. So if I was the people from Huntington I would watch how I talked about volunteer fire departments because there may come a day when you guys might need them. God bless the volunteer fire fighters and the professional ones too. They have a really hard job and I think they all do a good job. Dont take this very sad situation and turn it into jokes and should have could haves.... God will make everything alright again... There is a reason this happened. To the vendors I say keep your head up and God will take care of everything....He works in mysterious ways.....

Every time there is a fire of this nature, there is a discussion of the fire department. Or when lives are lost, even if the dept was a career dept, they did something wrong, equipment broke, they couldn't get water. . .It had to be their fault, lets sue them. For those who are not aware there is a system in place for large events & mutual aid even across state lines. Had there been a fire in Hgt, there would have been FFs to respond. They didn't empty the city. VFDs from Cabell Co. have responded to OH for what we call "area coverage". A dept will come into or closer to the area when all the fire fighters are busy on 1 call to respond if something else happens. When HFD has a big event, the volleys do the same for them, move up & stand by. Have any of you found out what your local VFD's call volume is? What the funding structure is? What their ISO rating is or their loss ratio is? Do you know how many hrs of training a VFF has to have every year? Maybe you should find out4yourself.

Wow. I have read some of these comments and just CANNOT beleive what I'm reading. Smoking in public buildings was banned long ago. There wasn't anyone there to be smoking. Flea Markets are ALL over the US, NC, SC, FL & likely in every other state. Its something people enjoy. As for the fire department comments: Yes, Chief Fuller of HFD was a volunteer, so were several other fire fighters on HFD and probably the other 11 or 12 CAREER FDs in WV. There are over 400 Volunteer depts in WV alone. We train hard & know what to do when there is an emergency. I wonder if anyone realizes that it could cost almost $200,000 a yr for a full paid dept? for how many calls? This wasn't a typical fire. No, we didn't complain that it cost our dept over $80 in fuel to respond with a tanker. We have a lot of rural area & we know how to move water QUICKLY. We had trucks from all over cabell county as well when we had a epic tire fire a few years ago. And we have responded to Hgt. several times.

You know i have seen a lot of comments on the page about smoking in the milton flea mkt. We were venders there for 4 years and did not allow smoking in our booths. But the entire flea mkt was smoke free after the smoking ban went into effect in wv. I did not see people smoking in there. Maybe the vendors who smoked them selves got the stuff smelling like smoke before they brought it in. We cannot stand to be around smoke so we never had any complaints about things in our booths smelling like smoke. So i am sure as soon as the new one is built there will be no smoking in it. It is againt the law to smoke in plublic places now.

Someone let us all know if the stray kitty was found that hung around the flea market......think his name is Lucky. If the market is rebuilt, please don't allow inside smoking. I used to go to the flea market but would buy little because things always smelled of cigarette smoke!

I cannot believe how many people have lost their businesses! It breaks my heart! I liked all of the booths! Especially the guy ( I forget his name) who is from Gary WV and drives all the way to Milton to run his custom graphics store! I loved that place he made me many graphics for my vehicles! I hope they do rebuild and everyone gets to come back! Much Love to All!!!

I think it would be a neat idea if a website was formed for all of the vendors to go onto and list if they have a website or another location because so many people were regulars at the flea market and I am sure others as well as myself had their favorite places and would like to stay in touch and continue to make purchases.

Posted by: anon on Sep 12, 2008 at 04:05 PM
i don't think the comment, "it was like 9/11" was very choice. i understand that this is a tragedy, and my heart goes out. but no one died or got hurt. allmost 3,000 did on 9/11.

Posted by: Scent From Heaven on Sep 12, 2008 at 03:54 PM
I think Lucky the Cat is probably OK. He wouldn't have been inside the market because I've heard cats have set off the motion detector in years past. He probably ran off because of all the activity. I hope someone will find him and help him out, or maybe he lives close by and visits on the weekends. Thank God know one was hurt and we thank all the fine fire departments for their dedication and hard work.

Posted by: Just Curious on Sep 12, 2008 at 03:47 PM
Just wondering who is going to have to pay for all this water that was used to put out the fire? Do the people of Milton have to pay for this because Betty Sargent didn't hook into WVAmerica Water to put a fire hydrant in town with enough pressure to contain this fire? And her boy Kreth she hired to run the city, did he do everything he was supposed to do to make sure everything in town was working at 100% capacity to handle a situation like this. Maybe the Flea Mkt would not have been a total loss if there wasnt any negligence on the towns part. These vendors needs to start looking at Betty and her boy for answers.

Thank you to our friends, customers and neighbors for your heartfelt wishes and concerns. It was such a sad loss for so many people. I worked every weekend at the flea since 1990 and have met SO many fine people there. I've met so many wonderful vendors and loyal customers over the years. Hard working people! My heart breaks at the thought of losing touch with them. Until we know what is happening next, please visit our store downtown Huntington and feel free to keep in touch at scentfromheavenwv@yahoo.com or 304-522-OILS (6457)and we can do mail order as well if you like. Eventually our web site will be up and you can always find us there. scentfromheaven.net It has been a pleasure to serve our customers at Milton and we hope to have another location soon, perhaps when Mr. Meadows rebuilds. Thank you again for loving my incense and we will keep the kitties happy by mailing catnip if you like :) Peace and comfort to all, Karen

Rebuilding and a sprinkler system plus AIR CONDITIONING will be nice. I hated going there in the summer. One had to have something to wipe the sweat off their face as it rolled down their face. A sprinkler system might have saved the flea market had there been one installed.

Posted by: Sandy on Sep 12, 2008 at 02:31 PM
I think the mayor of Milton is wrong when she stated the market drew about 10,000 visitors each weekend. I had a booth there for 5 years and closed it last year. Trust me, there was never 10,000 people there. I would still be in business if that many people were coming there. There were a lot of vacancies inside. Rent was getting too high. I was not even making rent on some weekends. If there were 10,000 people coming thru the market, everyone would have been rolling in the money. There was something for everyone. NOPE, SORRY, THE MAYOR IS WAY OFF WITH HER NUMBERS. Hope she is better with the money she is responsible for in Milton.

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF LUCKY THE CAT GOT OUT ALIVE?

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 12, 2008 at 02:14 PM
As for insurance..alot of places wouldn't insure flea market booths. We checked. When someone said they would the rates were too high to make it worth time selling. Yes, i know you all are saying, would have been worth it now. But you can't really say that unless you were there.

Posted by: Terri on Sep 12, 2008 at 02:12 PM
Thanks to all our family and friends who have shown tremendous support during this hard time for so many. No it isnt like 9/11, but it doesnt make it hurt any less for people who had businesses there. We had a life there and now it is gone. Everything we have known for 8 years is about to change drastically. So those of you making judgemental comments on the vendors and people affected should just stay out of it. What good does it do for you to spend time making hurtful comments. If you don't care stay out of it. Mind your own business. Let us deal with our problems without having to hear from you insensitive jerks. Do something better with your time. We have enough sadness right now.

I a very distraught. I have smuggled many of bones at this place. I have gobbled many of rods and my heart goes out to these people.

Posted by: Candy on Sep 12, 2008 at 12:06 PM
This is horrible for everyone effected by this fire, but everyone needs to remember that no one was hurt or killed and that is the most important thing. Things can be replaced, people cannot.

Posted by: Christine on Sep 12, 2008 at 11:31 AM
To zel, I hate to point this out, but many of your "down to earth" flea market patrons are shallow and superficial as well. Why else would you scour the market looking for knock off name brands if not to pretend to have more money than you do. Have you seen all the people who are rockin "Coach" purses of late? It is a tragedy, no doubt, but let's not get into judging people for being more shallow if they can buy something full price as opposed to having to find it bootleg.

Thanks Boyd for rebuilding!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 12, 2008 at 10:23 AM
To the person who said the fire looked like it was set because it was burning in several different places-I think the conclusion they came to about that was it started in one place and burned on the inside before showing any affects to the outside. So who knows how long it was burning before the fire dept. was alerted. How sad all those people who lost all their stuff. I for one am glad they are rebuilding and will be back to support all of the vendors. I loved all the antique stores and the primitives! I hope that the 2 new booths come back! The one was hand painted primitives, hand made crafts and pumpkins(Trish something I believe) and the other one was a lady who had nice country decorations that were hand painted. SHe worked on them while she was there! To the two primitive stores on the far end-one was on the left as soon as you came in and one a little further up on the right...please come back!!!

I now know what it must be like to live in China or old Russia. When my comments was not posted, That is where I thought I was. I made no crude comments or used foul language ,so I see no reason why my comments was not posted. Except for the simple fact that the people of WSAZ enjoys the right controling what people can and can not say, this is SUPPOSE to be a place the we AMERICANS can express ourselves. As a veteran this disturbs me and I will express my opinion about this on campus, and everywhere else people gather and will listen; today, tommorrow, and days to come. I am very disappointed in you, and to think that I once thought that you was not like that, but now I know the truth.

Please ignore the shallow and superficial people laughing at this tragedy. These are the people that judge you by the brand name on your clothing. They will spend $600 dollars for an iphone or $400 on a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes but wouldn't give you the time of day if they were standing next to Big Ben. Ignore them.

First i would like to extend my deepest sympathy to all the vendors from the flea mkt and i share your sorrow. As i was watching the 911 vidos this evening i am aware that our building burning down and the loss of material things was not nearly as bad as 911 and i don't think anyone meant it that way. However as it is easy to say material things yes, however if we look closer we will find that it was food on the table of a child for a single mother and xtra income for medicine for the elderly who may not be able to do anything else to make xtra money. So to some, they have lost a lot more that JUST material things. They have lost hope. All that we ask for is your prayers not your sons and daughters to go fight for us but just your prayers. Is that to much to ask? And i am very very proud of all the men and women that are serving our country make no mistake of that!!!

This is the kind of thing that could happen to any one. I feel sorry for all the vendors and all the people who loved to go and shop and just have fun. MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO ALL THE PEOPLE EVEN IF THEIR OPINIONS ARE DIFFERENT THEN MINE.

What is wrong with you people? there is a huge fire with huge losses and all you care about is if everyone paid their fare share of taxes? Anyone in any business is left to their own honesty to report their income! Everyone at the flea market had a working business license and the county came and checked on a regular basis to make sure! Why don't you ask your local contractor, appliance repairman, doctor or dentist if they claimed each and every red cent? What steroetyping to think that this was just some piddly lil market so they surely must all be rip off artists! I can only imagine that when it was said how many lost $1,000s, that those with nasty comments are jealous to make such hateful comments!I think Stephen Dodd's earlier post told you IRS wannabes right where to stick it! I THOUGHT WE WEST VIRGINIANS WERE KNOWN FOR OUR KINDNESS.... I guess that does not include all of us! Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!

Yes we paid taxes on flea market sales- lots of them -both federal and state- and quarterly- but without all the big breaks that government gives corporations - we didnt charge taxes though because 80% of customers would get mad and make a fuss if we did - we ate the taxes

Posted by: stephanie on Sep 11, 2008 at 07:41 PM
my bro paid more in taxes (small business taxes) from his multiple fleamarket booths than most of the people leaving ignorant comments - his flea market income was twice that of his day job - now he is out thousands and future income - no insurance- please pray for his family that they don't have to declare bankruptcy - he worked so hard to build his booths into something nice and so hard to have excellent credit

The truck was close to a section where ammunition started exploding and the truck wouldn't start to move it to safety so it was abandoned. The flea market is technically out of Milton City Limits resulting in no B&O taxes from the city. I'm sorry to hear that there is now a fatality even though the person was 200 miles away from this fire. I haven't seen anyone smoking inside the building since the smoking ban went into effect so I don't understand all the complaining about that unless it was something I missed. To the lady that owns the flea market in Cannonsburg, you're just using this to promote your flea market and you know these vendors lost everything. Lucky the cat was not at the flea market through the week from what i've heard, I think Lucky came to the flea market each week with the manager Joyce.

My father was a vendor at the flea market for many years (gun shop). He will turn 80 in just a few days. I always looked forward to visiting the flea market when in Huntington. I know he will miss his weekends at the Milton Flea Market. It was a lifelong passion and hobby for him.Kept him young I guess!! Of course he lost everything as most everyone did with no insurance. Thoughts and prayers for everyone affected by this fire.

First let me say that this is heartbreaking news. To those who are saying "karma" caused this I think that is terrible. And for your theory to work why were honest people punished? Those who paid taxes and worked hard with their businesses, why did it happen to them? I hope everyone effected will get on their feet and build even bigger and better businesses. This is not like one store being destroyed, it is many, and effects many lives, not just those who had business there. I will truly miss the flea market, it was a great place to support local businesses.

I'd like to extend my since compassion to all of the vendors who suffered a loss at the Milton Flea Market. This was not only a place to find good deals for me, but was a place to go for entertainment. The vendors and people who visited the market where all so very nice. May God help all of these people as well as the community.

What a tragedy for those that depended on this venue for their income. My thoughts are with all of those that have been affected by this fire. SHAME ON YOU to all the heartless jerks poking fun at the Flea Market. There were dozens of vendors that sold beautiful hand crafted items, collectibles, and antiques. Where else could you buy some of these things?

My husband and I are devisatted. His parents sell every weekend at the Flea Market. We have met many special Vendors like Frank & JoJo. We will miss seeing your smiling faces. On another note, I totally agree with the other person about editing the clips before they are shown on TV. I agree 100% that this is a tragedy for our small town, but it can not be compared to the 9/11 tragedy! That just made people from WV look stupied. I hope that Lucky the Cat is alright. I am very sorry for the Vendors that counted on the extra money that they made from selling their goods. I hope they will all be alright in the months to come and that their smiling faces will be back when they rebuild. It just wounldn't be the same without you! God Bless and what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger!

I have always been a fan of WSAZ. I have never been to the flea market, and my simpathy to those that lost MATERIAL things, but when WSAZ played the clip that this was "like 9-11", I really lost respect for this station. If I am correct, 2,976 innocent victims lost their lives that day. How many people died in that building...ZERO. No comparision people. And, what a disrespect. I am embarased and disheartened at the choice to air that clip.

You know these comments posted on this site for the most part are very nice and careing and sincire. Some of them however have no feelings at all. We did have several spots at the flea mkt and we did collect taxes!!! that is terrible to even bring up!!! we also did not smoke and had no smoking signs up in our booth. What has our country turned into to when these are the questions asked by our fellow americans? We need not only put prayer back into our schools but also our lives. I do not belive that we (vendors) are looking for handouts or donations of money from anyone. My husband and I will be fine but there are others in the flea mkt that will not be fine and would it be so hard to just not say anything at all if we cannot say something nice? Something most of us learned very early in life. Thanks to all the vendors i know how hard we all worked to have what we had and we will have it again if we have faith.

first i would like to say to everyone who had anything to do with the flea market that they are in everyones prayers.my mother and i had always gone to the flea market for years sometimes just to look and sometimes to sell. we had had a booth rented for a couple of months and on sunday we decided because of our jobs we were going to take our stuff home and take a break for a couple of weeks so all of our things had been removed.someone high up was looking out for us, alot were not so lucky.it wasnt just a place to make a little extra money it was like being with family everyone talked to everyone and everyone looked out for each other and their things.were else in this day in age could you leave things sitting all week long while you were at work and the thougt never cross your mind to be worried about it setting there while you were gone.my grandmother always told me the good lord doesnt put anything on you that you cant survive so it might be tough for awhile but IT WILL BE BACK!!

Thank You for all your phone calls and prayers. Our flea mkt. phone number will now ring directly to our shop in Mason. We may have taken a pretty rough blow, but we're not down and out. We will rebuild with Boyd, but until then, plans are in the making for a large consignment shop in Perry Morris Square in Milton, WV. To all of our regular customers, dedicated patrons and those of you who have layaways and orders you can reach us at ourcuriosityshop@yahoo.com. We appreciate your patience, this is just a stumbling block, we hope to see you at the Pumpkin Festival. HELP us lift Milton up again!

A friend of a friend just informed me of a vendor at the flea market who was in Virginia visiting her parents when she learned of the Flea Market fire and has since taken an overdose of pills and killed herself. This is truly tragic what has happened in our community and to all those that this has affected on a more personal level. My prayers are with all those who are struggling with this loss.

I pray that each and every vendor and their family.I hope that the rebuilding is bigger and better and even more lucrative for each of you! Hang in there!God will bring you through this!

I am the mother of 2 firefighters on the Milton Vol.Fire Dept. and I want to commend all the fire depts.both volunteer and Htgn Fire Dept.for all the assistance with the flea market fire, these guys put their lives on the line each time they go out on a call and this one particular call could really have been a nightmare if it wasn't for the extensive training these guys & gals have prepared for. No matter where you live, be proud of these people, they don't have to give their time to volunteer but they all do it from their hearts. They are there day or night, snow,or sunshine when you need them. Now, for all the support we received from businesses donating food and drinks, you are really appreciated, we couldn't do it without your help. Please support your local VFDs & to Boyd & all the vendors and our friend Linda, please know we will really miss our Flea Market

I have read most of the 259 comments on here and have to say most of them are very nice. My wife and I had several booths at the flea mkt and sold NEW area rugs and carpet. We lost about $30,000 in merchandise at our cost. Please don't think this was a small venture for us as it was not. We will be back as soon as possible when they rebuild. In the mean time if any of our customers would like to get ahlold of us for a rug or carpet please send us an email at ilovedolphins711@yahoo.com. We would like to thank all of our customers as you made us great!!! Please keep us in your prayers as no we did not have insurance either. We will be praying for all of our freinds and neighbors that we met at the Milton Flea Market...Hope to see you all very soon!

My family and I was just there on Sunday, this is such a tragedy for all the vendors.Thank God no one was hurt, it was completely full on Sunday and someone would have been hurt or killed the things inside can be replaced but a life can never be. I look forward to coming back when it is rebuilt and buying the fruits, applebutter and my daughter loves all the primitive stores there. The people in the stores are so nice my heart goes out to you all May God bless you.

The Flea market was a fun place to go. All the vendors were amazing! They were all very friendly. To those who say its no big deal it was just a flea market- you guys must not have visited this place.. The majority of these people were older and wasn't just a source of income- These people had many friends that they looked forward to seeing on the weekend when the market was open. && the taxes?? What kind of question is that to bring up when a lot of these people have put soo much into the flea market? And i can't recall anytime when i had saw very many people if i saw any smoking.. i don't like smoking either but can't say i saw of it inside.. it's a time of tragedy.. not a time to try to give the milton flea market a bad reputation. To those who had any type of loss my prayers are with you and your families. There were many things there that i enjoyed looking at and buying. Thanks so much for the great work that was there! I can't wait for things to be rebuilt. God bless.

I have a comment for WSAZ..Why in the world would you show a video clip where a lady is comparing this Flea Market Fire to the Tragedies that happened on September 11th? By all means the Flea Market burning down is a sad thing, but it is in NO COMPARISON to what happened on September 11th. I think you should review the clip you showed this morning about the fire on the 6 O’clock news and cut that comment out. It is sad but it is nothing like what happened on September 11th. Show some Respect.

For the past two years my family has gone to the Milton Flea Market at least every Saturday, and sometimes on Sunday. It was the big highlight of our week and we certainly enjoyed each of the stalls and the friendly vendors. We have spent a lot of money on a lot of wonderful merchandise, and will greatly miss the old Flea Market. Even when rebuilt, which I know will occur, it will never be quite the same ever again. We were shocked by this devastating occurrance and wish the best for all involved. We were so releaved to hear that no one was physically injured or lost their life. We drove down the very night of the fire, and said our last goodbyes to a very precious friend.

In reading all the posts, one stuck me as very interesting. Do the people at the flea market pay State Taxes? I have made many purchases and only a handfull charge taxes. Does the tax dept ever check to see these people have a license? Most dealers do not give receipts or anything. Sounds like most are getting off pretty good in the tax dept. But, I guess if they do not have an inventory list with prices, there is no way to verify if they report correct taxes. Sounds like a good place to make money and pay what you want, if anything. In my travels, I have been to many antique malls and everyone has their merchandise marked with identifying info and price and you pay when you check out and the charge taxes. I know it would not be feasible to do that at a flea market like Milton, but one would think there is some way to collect taxes, so the state is not cheated out of 'their' money.

My heart goes out to the venders and I wish you all the best. As for those who would scrutinize a paid Firefighter or a Volunteer ... The only difference is the monetary compensation they do or do not recieve for risking their lives. My Family suffered the loss of a loved one & a friend in the explosion in Ghent. Both were volunteer firefighters and loved what they did. At my uncles funeral I saw not "proffessionals & Volunteers". I saw a brotherhood mourn the loss of one of their own. So until you put on a set of Bunkers and pick up a hose you have no right to scrutinize these everyday heros. Thanks to all of you who risk your lives on a daily basis.

1st of all, my heart goes out to all who lost their business. 2nd a sincere thanks to ALL of the FD's for there assistance. 3rd to all who brought food, drink, and a strong back, your help and thoughtfulness is highly appreciated. There has been some discussion about the vol. and paid issue. I was on Milton's 3rd engine to arrive. After some activity, I looked around from my truck and saw Chief Fuller from Huntington. He was not in command, but he pitched in to help with just one sector of operations. Yes, Huntington did send an ariel, but I don't think it was utilized because of the lack of a secondary water supply. Tower 1 was returned to the city, but just the thought of it being there when called upon was a blessing. From my standpoint down in the smoke, Chief grade officers from other Depts didn't want to take over just help out. An interview from another channel said in 5 minutes of her takeing pictures, that 30%-50% of the building had caught fire. Let's ease up on the criticism

Any word about Lucky the Cat?

Posted by: concerned on Sep 11, 2008 at 12:48 PM
To answer some of the questions: No, most vendors didn't have insurance because it was between 800-1000 monthly cost. Also, for those of you who think it would have been different if there was a career dept. you are wrong! If Milton had a career dept they wouldn't be able to cover Mud River Rd., Kilgore Cr., Barkers Ridge or Johns Cr. due to all of these areas are out of the city limits. Therefore, the call volume would be entirely too low and it would not maake sense to have a career fire dept covering the small area that the police dept covers. If I am not mistaken at one point in time even the flea market was considered out of city limits. I think everything around it was in but the low area it sat on was actually out. So if this is so, then a career dept wouldn't have been first in anyways. This problem may have been taken care of but I don't think so. If people knew about what they were talking about there wouldn't be so many rude, dumb comments. Sympathy to everyone who lost.

How does Ona lose a brand new fire truck in a one story structure fire?!? .. wow. Good times.

Posted by: FireMarshallBill on Sep 11, 2008 at 12:26 PM
It is sad that people do not realize the damage fire causes until its too late. With as much income as this facility made, it would have been a small but incredibly wise investment to have an operating sprinkler system and fire alarm system. Also, I am positive the fire departments did not have enough hydrants and water. When you build and operate a place this large, have adequate water supplies available to firefighters. This fire probably could have been prevented if these steps were followed!

Posted by: Uncle Sam on Sep 11, 2008 at 12:26 PM
Amen Leah! I hear alot of people talk "Karma" to those with a negitive opinion of the flea market. Well if you don't claim your income, dont file/short taxes, and sell bootleg items for a living.. well this could be Karma biting those merchants back. Milton flea market should have payed taxes to our great state, country and the city of Milton. If you are a merchant or a supporter and want to reply.. please think for a moment. MERCHANTS : Did you pay ALL your tax money or any at all? Did you sell Illegal/bootleg items? Did you know/support anyone that did not charge sales tax or knew they didn't file taxes? Did you ever sell a grey market/stolen item? BUYERS : Did you do a deal with a merchant that didn't charge sales tax or file taxes on the income they made? Did you every buy a bootleg\Illegal item? Did you ever buy a stolen\gray market item? Did you know of shops that did sell these items? ..Then lets talk karma.

I would like to take the time to commend WSAZ for their coverage of the Milton Flea Market and the live feeds and their time and effort in keeping the public informed on this tragedy. The Milton Flea Market has been the heart of Milton for many years and brought alot of money and people to this town. I am thankful that there were no lives lost in this fire. I appreciate all the counties Fire Fighters and people coming together to help and support our town. It just shows how great our people in WV really are and that's something we should be proud of. My heart goes out to the vendors that lost everything in the fire along with the Ona Fire Dept's. loss of a brand new fire truck. I want to Thank Boyd Meadows for his consideration in rebuilding the Flea Market back and I anxiously look forward to returning to the Milton Flea Market. May God Bless you all.

Hope, Jim, Judy, Mary, Brenda, Nedra, Paul, Sandy, Inga, Bill, Patience, Joan, Tracy, Rhonda, Jerry, Linda, Steve, Paul, Betty, Cheryl, Bill, Carol, Ronnie, Jerry sooooooo many good friends to mention, including Nancy, JoAnne and all the girls who worked in the kitchens, if there is anything we can do call. Most know how to reach us. Just remember the good lord closes one door just to open another. I'll miss all of you, but we will rebuild, bigger and better. On a lighter note. Maybe just maybe we could get an AC unit next time. You all are in our prayers.

Lets hope they enforce the NO SMOKING when they rebuild. They had a man who went around sweeping up cigarette butts--I guess so if and when the health dept came, they did not see them. I had trouble breathing sometimes, because someone smoking would not step outside for a couple of minutes. I always complained, but the owner did not seem to care. He just looked at me and said "I will take care of it." The health dept should enforce the no smoking at flea markets and quit worrying about the bars. People know when they go to a bar that its going to be full of smoke. When we don't expect is to take our family to a flea market and be exposed to second hand smoke.

I have visited the Milton Flea Market since day one. We loved looking at everything--old and new. This place will be missed. Hope they rebuild soon. I'm afraid the vendors will go else where and not come back. That would be sad. If the owner raises their rent, there is no way they will be able to come back and attempt to make a living. We will lose a great shopping market.

To those that are on here acting like it's not a big deal, you are coldhearted. This was a major source of income for many families. It's not like it's a major store where the items can be replaced. Milton Flea Market had some of the best mix of merchandise, not to mention many were hand made by the people themselves. My heart goes out to the families affected by this tragedy as well as the town of Milton. But if we must see blessing in a tragedy, it's that no one was physically hurt.

09/10 we will not forget™ I want to say that I am very sorry for everyones loss. However our nation has been at a loss for the last 8 years. I believe as these people affected by the fire do, that we need a change. I am tired of the same old Washington politics! You see Bush doesnt care about this flea market but I do. You see, I believe that this flea market like our country can rise from the ashes and be a beacon to everyone. A beacon of hope, and of freedom. Please join with me as we take time to remember those who lost all. Also remember Lucky the Cat, may that cat still be lucky! Remember, Nov 4th to come out and vote Obama. I will do my best to help this country and your flea market reach the top of the mountain once again. Joe, will be visiting the ruins of the flea market very soon. I hope to pay a visit as well, to pay my respects. 09/10 we will not forget™

I know that censorship is wrong, and there is freedom of speech, but why do you, WSAZ, post comments that serve no purpose other than to be mean? We can all voice our opinions, and argue our points, but those comments aren't even opinions or arguments. They are just cold-hearted jabs at a sad situation that affected a lot of people. My friend Sammy, who has since passed away, was a 25-year-old quadriplegic who's highlight of the week was to get to go to the Milton Flea Market and see people and feel like a functioning member of society again. It was more than just an old flea market to a lot of people. Miss you Sam.

I have been reading in horror and disgust, the ignorant and uncaring comments posted by some of the tri-states' "good citizens". My husband and I have only been there about a dozen times, but it was well worth the trip from Greenup, KY! We wish all of the vendors the best of luck with rebuilding their businesses! We also hope that all of the animals are unharmed and in a safe place! To WSAZ.... no other station compares with yours! We think that all of the others are simply cheap knock-offs of the original NEWSCHANNEL! Thank you for doing a wonderful job!

id jus like to settle this issue about prof and vol firefighters, guys...we study and train and test outta the same exact books, n the classes are the same length, and in my opionion the only difference is paid and vol, we're all professionals...and jus a little stat for ya, thers over 400 vol depts in the state and 12 paid dept, most of which are in the kanawha cabell area, theres no difference in the protection you get...and you have to look at the call volume in your area to see if its even feasalbe to pay a minimum of 3-4 guys to run less than 10 calls a week

We want to express our deepest sorrows and prayers to all our fellow flea market neighbors. Peter has taken care of our large faimly ,7 children, for over 30 years with the help of the milton fleamarket. So many winters we would of gone hungry. And the kindness of the owners ,who when they knew you were so hardup for cash would let you slide until you made some money. This market ment so much to Peter, It was more than his passion it was his life. It is what helped his disabled body feellike he made the difference in our family life. And thanks to milton flea market he did make a difference. Again our love and hearts go out to everyone there. I think we were lucky.Peter will go tomorrow and check his booth. lov.and prayers from a fellow coworker

I hope they rebuild soon. The covered but open areas are still there & presumably usable once the investigation is over & the debris are gone. There's even a small place that could be used to serve food inside the part that's still standing. If the concrete floor is still intact, they could even build on it again, as long as they used shorter building sections with concrete breaks between them. I wish there was something I could do to help. Good luck, guys. I'm looking forward to your reopening date.

I would like to say I am so proud of each and every one of the firemen, law enforcement, paramedics, Salvation Army, Red Cross, and anyone that I may have forgotten at this time of night. We have just gotten home from this call and we are exhausted. As a wife of a firefighter and a friend to all these men and women that helped, I love you all and you are special. You done a wonderful job and should be commended for the days work you have endured. Against what some are saying, I don't care if you are volunteers or not, you got the job done and it couldn't have been done any better. With flying bullets, collapsing walls or ceilings, heat, smoke, hunger, thirst, etc. I would like to say "GREAT JOB!" I love you all and bless you for everything you done today or in your life. It is not an easy job and it takes alot of work to do what you have done. I would like to extend my thoughts to all the vendors and wish you all the best.

Who cares if it was Huntington FD or Charleston FD standing beside the the other department. The point is, when it comes to a matter like this, it shouldn't matter who is there, only that the firefighters put forth their best. We need to get over the fact that our tax dollars could possibly be used for something in another area. If it were you in this situation you would want anyone and everyone to help.

Posted by: Knowthefactsbeforeposting on Sep 11, 2008 at 12:08 AM
Why are so many people on here being negative of the assistance HFD gave? If I recall Chief Fuller started as a volunteer and he has no problems calling for them when needed. You certainly didn't hear the taxpayers of Lawrence County, OH, Ceredo, Barboursville, and Kenova being negative the night of the Emmons Fire. I'm not saying we should praise our civil service people, but give them a little respect. And food for thought, if you think you can do it better, get out from in front of your computer, go to our nearest FD and ask for an application. Fire Departments in the Tri-State would love to train you and receive your FREE assistance. Thank you to all of those who risked their lives today.

I would like to thank everyone who supported the fire dept's today. It's a good feeling to know there are people who care about us, yes I say us b/c I am with the milton fd. It disgust me to no end when some have posted comments about how bad of a job we done, why are we not fully staffed, why did we call for huntington, why did it take so much time. Here you go, 1st, we are volunteer, we help people in need for free, why b/c we have a heart. The town cannot afford a paid f.d., if we dont do it who will? 2nd, we asked for huntington to respond to utilize their ariel, along with several other depts b/c the fire was so intense. Each firefighter ( volunteer and paid) go through the same training- SAME- no different. the only difference is they work shifts and get paid, we all do the same job. It took so much time b/c of the intense fire. For the ones who are so down on the firefighters and volunteers, please stop by sometime and I will be more than happy to let you know all we do.

Thankfully no one was hurt. I can't remember the name of the book store but that was the reason I would drive over an hour from Jackson,OH to come to the Flea Market. I could spend hours in book store and probably did until my husband would come and run me out. I can't understand people making horrible comments about this. Put yourself in these people's place who had their business there. I'm not a mean person but I'd love to find out they've had their way of income was pulled out from underneath them, then have people point and laugh at them. Have some respect. Grow up then come back on here and apologize.

i loved going there on weekends to look around at all the treasures, though the biggest treasure of all was talking with family while walking about various things the antiques reminded them of. I loved looking over the books and such. The benches made it so easy to take someone who couldn't get around much but still wanted get out and about. Talking to everyone you met or knew. It is a shame that this had to happen, but i take comfort that if it had to happen it happened when there wasn't anyone there. I know there are sometimes animals, does anyone know about if they were still there? To the ones making fun of this, SHAME ON YOU.

I grew up around the Milton area and remember many weekends shopping at the flea market with my family. My hearts goes out the the hundreds of people and families who have lost their source of revenue. I do hope they plan to rebuild because even though I live in Georgia now I still made it a point to shop at the Milton Flea Market everytime I went back home.

Posted by: sara on Sep 10, 2008 at 08:28 PM
I can't believe people would make fun of the flea market burning down. How cold and insensitive. People made a living there, and many of us enjoyed going there. Shame on you for being so judgemental, since it is just a "flea market". You disgust me. So if one day your house burns down and all of your personal belongings and things you have worked so hard for are ruined, can we laugh at you and say "Oh its just a house, who cares." Grow up.

I have mentioned this on WSAZ before and I'll say it again. This a flea market NOT a bar. I see vendors and people walking around like its a bingo parlor smoking there cancer sticks. If you people cant understand a sign that says NO SMOKING then maybe there should be a class that you have to take before you purchase the next box. And I think if the bars cant have there ashtrays out then they need to enforce this at all of the flea markets. Maybe the next time I go to the milton mall I wont have to smell like I left a bingo parlor.

I understand so many people lost everything, but we must also remember all the business that will loose alot also. Places such as McDonalds, Wendys, Ginos ect. I am sure they will miss all of the extra customer flow. I am also sure lots of the vendors would visit during the weekend. Regardless, may god be with everyone in their time of need.

Posted by: Anon on Sep 10, 2008 at 07:49 PM
Thank God this didn't happen on the wkends when it was FILLED with people like it always is. More than likely it would have been a terrible tragedy in human lives like the fire at Scottstown Fireworks Store years ago I've often wondered when I've been at the Flea Mkt about what would happen if something like this would happen b/c although the exits were all marked, people would panic. I know I would. When you pack places like that full of people & God forbid something horrible like this happens there's panic and mayhem which leads to people clogging all the exits, pushing, trampling etc Without sprinklers & the way it was configured, it would have gone up so fast even with all those people in there so thank God, as bad as the material loss is, NO ONE was in there. If it had been when it was full, its hard to say how many would have died and been injured severely All places like this as well as apts, houses & stores - ALL public places should have MORE exits than required

I grew up in Ashton, only about 10 miles from the flea market. Sundays were always spent first going to church and then to the flea market. I remember buying and selling baseball cards there among other things. I bought my first set of sub-woofers there and used them for years. My parents frequented the craft supply shop for their own crafts that they sold at another flea market. My family even set up a booth outside a few times. Even when I entered college at Marshall, my friends from the dorms and I would frequent the flea market looking for deals on things that we might be able to resell on eBay. One of my fondest memories is of my friend Chris haggling with one of the coin dealers until the dealer just got mad and left for the day. I moved out of the area and just moved back about a year ago thus I hadn't been to the flea market in years, but my girlfriend and I were making plans to go together for the first time very soon. Sadly we'll never get that opportunity now.

I'm sure there are going to be alot of comments on your idiotic remark. You must be a kid, because no adult with any brains would post a comment like that. Just a flea market?? That flea market was some of the vendors only means of money or supplementing their income from this. Also, this will hurt the town of Milton. THINK ABOUT IT..YOU BIG DUMMY!

Posted by: Angie on Sep 10, 2008 at 07:21 PM
Well for a matter of fact WHY you may think this is just a Flea Market but this was alot of peoples business and a way of income. I know of a couple people that they worked every weekend at this flea market and made there living to pay there bills. How would u feel if you was the one that had a business in there and you lost everything... o wait you are prob one of those people that dont need to work for a living and draw a check!

I have set up at the Milton flea market and I now set up at Pomeroy, Ohio. My heart goes out to everyone at Milton. For WHY who said it is just a flea market has no idea what it is like to be a part of the flea market family, we all put everything we have into our flea market stores, for some it is to get our medicine or to help the kids out or buy food for the table, it is great for the ones who need help with depression. Our family at Pomeroy are very important people, we love to offer great things to buyers, we also have the regulars who brighten our day also. If you have never been a part of the flea market family, you will never understand. Again my heart is with you all.

I lost my Skate Shop today, Everyday Skate Shop. I did not have insurance because the flea market is located in a flood plain and it was sooooooooooo expensive even for renters insurance. I didn't know the building didn't have a sprinkler system. All the metal doors are locked from the inside. It was very painful to watch it just burn on TV so I drove out there and could not believe what I saw. I would like to thank everyone for caring about us. (vendors). I plan on opening my shop again. Had to post again because I STILL cant believe that there are people who think this is hillarious just b/c it wasnt "new" stuff or "trendy" enough and no one died. Like I said earlier, alot of people I knew from Ona and Milton and even Huntington made their entire monthly incomes each and every weekend @ the market. And it was a local hotspot (NOT EYESORE, unlike those boarded up unused buildings!) of memories-i too recall going there with my father, now passed away since 99, looking for parts for his antique cars, buying him a new pocket knife, even getting me one of those wooden train whistles i drove everyone crazy with! I would like to know if ALL the animals, the ones sold and the ones who visited and such, are ok.. and pls, if u cant say anything nice then why say anything at all!? I'm still trying to get some type of local benefit planned w/ bands i know on myspace...

Posted by: Kaye on Sep 10, 2008 at 06:55 PM
I guess the owner hasn't thought about potential lawsuits if it is determined the building wasn't up to fire code and there were not sprinklers. Also it could be determined possible faulty wiring?? If arson, was the security adequat?? Did the alarms work properly if they didn't go off until 11:00 am (which is the about time the owner was there according to WSAZ's broadcast) Some flea marker booth owners I know say sometimes those alarms were turned off - also the firemen themselves said the building wasn't set up well to prevent a fire from spreading and there was no way to put it out because of the metal exterior -

I have a family member who had multiple booths and from $50,000 to $100,000 in merchandise in the booths. No insurance. Worked 7 days a week (regular job and weekends for 4 years putting everything he had into it to build it up) So it was more than a flea market to some. Will probably have to file bankruptcy.

Anytime a community experiences a fire of any magnitude, the lives of dozens can be affected. The loss of the flea market affects hundreds, perhaps thousands of people and will have a negative economic impact on not only those "victims" but the Milton community and no doubt, the extended region for a long period of time. None of this is a joking matter. As far as the firefighters...there are some apt fire dwellers who would disagree with some of the posted negative comments about the volunteers. Thanks volunteers and paid firefighters for helping to keep us safe. Your services, as well as that of our law and EMS personnel are invaluable and appreciated by those of us who actually pay attention.

I hope that they can rebuild soon. A BIG THANK YOU!!!! to all the fire depts that helped to day. My husband and I have been married for 14 years. We bought many of the items that we used to first decorate our home with, and are still decorating our home, at the Milton Flea Market. It just seems unreal that the whole place could have burned down before anything could be done to save it.

It is such a shame that it had to burn down...when i was little my family and I use to go and look at all the interesting things...

I really hate this. It is such a horrible thing, I was planning on coming home in the next weeks and had plans to take my nephews to the flea market, I was born and raised in Milton and loved to go to the flea market,I looked forward going there,it is were I would get all my Marshall logo's for my car. This is such a horrible tragedy for my family and for the town of Milton and surrounding counties. Please Boyd rebuild so that families can enjoy weekend's together again.

It is so sad to see this happen. My wife and I just bought a rug there a few weeks ago. I hope to see the market rebuild and see the vendors come back. I am so sorry to hear about everybody's loss (the owner and those who had booths). I sure will miss it. To those who are making jokes about it, keep in mind, there are many people who not only lost a job or a business, but a piece of their life as well. 'Tis a sad, sad day.

For many this was not just an outdoor mall, it was infact a place of social gathering, memories of family outing's,income for those trying to make end's meet,a part of a small town art's and craft; surley it was more than buisness it was part of our community. Our volunteer fire department responded just as quickly and efficiently as any paid department would. It surley show's the brotherhood when a call for assistance goes out and so many other department's respond. We now grieve for all that is lost and pray for those who struggle to recover from this fire. We can only offer our prayers and our commitment to return to your booths even the out door area until you can rebuild.

though i live in ashland now and i am married..I had and still have great memories there. My grandmother ( WHO RECENTLY DIED IN APRIL) used to take me, my mom , sister and aunt there..It was our family weekend together. i remember sitting in the rocking chairs and eating the great ice cream...or goin to the guys booth who had the faux poop (acrss from food stand)...I feel for some of those people, that was there lively hood. Do they know how it started yet? porbably not, too early. I will surely miss that place as it was a place for fun and for families to spend time together. Such wonderful people were there at the flea market. No other Market has the friendliness like milton does. Down home good people. GOD BLESS OUR FIREMEN AND EMTS...as they have probably one of the hardest jobs. Glad noone was injured.. God Bless

I can't believe this... My mother had a booth there and would work on her crafts 24/7 staying up til 1 in the morning. She just got her own booth there and almost got it completed when this happened. She just quit her job because she liked going there sooooo much... That was also the only way she was making any money and she really invested a lot into her crafts. She just loaded up her shop with new crafts too...

Sorry to hear about this. My family and I used to go there all the time and always enjoyed it. It's hard to believe that so much stuff got wiped out like that, and the worst part of all is most of the sellers didn't have insurance.

I started working at a jewelry store in the flea market with one of my friends a little over a month ago. In that month, I had grown to love that place and the vendors around our booth. It's devestating, and I'm never going to forget the people I met.

I have never been to this market but I do feel so sorry for all the people this has affected. I especially feel for the vendors who have lost all there time and energy into putting their different merchandise together and to the ones who just set up to sell little odds and ends. Hope that they can rebuild or something.

Posted by: Mary on Sep 10, 2008 at 04:55 PM
This is just horrible. I've been there the last couple weekends and kept thinking I'd buy a saddle I kept seeing in the back and now I've waited too late. Lots of folks do make their living there and there was some wonderful merchandise thru out the place. A couple weeks ago I was looking for a old fashioned fountain pen for my 87 year old Dad and the vendor just said to take it, he had too many. He was so nice, as were most all the vendors I got to know over time. I keep wondering, can you insure a flea market booth? Would any of these folks have any type of insurance that would cover any of the losses. Many of the vendors had been there for years and had quite a bit of inventory. We'll put everyone on the prayer lists.

I have recently moved to Atlanta, and I heard about the fire from my family that is in the area. Fisrt I would like to say that all the people making negative comments,"You all need some serious help ', I think that we should all be thankful that no one was killed. I agree it could have and would have been much worse if it happened on a weekend. I understand that a lot of people lost alot of important things but they are material things and can be replaced, however lives can't. So we as a community need to sit back and ask ourselves what we can do to help not make fun of it. This is definately a tragedy and is a very sad day for Milton and Cabell county. This effects everyone in some way or another. SO INSTEAD OF BEING NEGATIVE AND MAKING LEWD REMARKS ASK SOMEONE WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

Posted by: Carolyn on Sep 10, 2008 at 04:53 PM
So sad to hear of this tragedy. My husband & I lived in Scott Depot for several years and we loved going to the Milton Flea Market. I know a lot of vendors have now lost their livelihood...I hope there is someway it can be rebuilt. I am so thankful there were no injuries, and that it happened during the week instead of on the weekend when it was always crowded. Our thoughts and prayers are with all this has affected.

It syre is sad to think that the flea market is gone. Me and my family moved to WV in 1996 and have made time at least once a month to go to the flea market. We were here when it was flooded and all you could see was a care that was left and all there was left was the roof of the car. When my parents come to visit us from Pa the Milton Flea market is one place that they MUST visit. I called them and the are heart broken. My now 8 year old son was only two days old when my mom had him at the Milton Flea Market. I don't know what we are going to do now that it is gone.

Posted by: Kathy on Sep 10, 2008 at 04:46 PM
Although I loved ALL the booths & vendors, some were even closer to my heart than others..one was the ones with all the hundreds of books & since I'm a voracious reader I LOVED going through them. Also the GORGEOUS furniture especially the Amish furniture. I couldn't afford any of it but I really enjoyed just looking at it all and appreciating the beauty and craftsmanship. Also loved the flowers and veggie stands..well just loved it all. Someone here posted "it's just a flew mkt"..well, NOOOOOO, it isn't. It's an institution to all of us who live in Huntington, Ona, Milton and neighboring areas. It's been part of our lives for decades and we're all saddened for the wonderful vendors and sellers there. A LOT of really good folks have lost their business and livelihood and we're so sad for them first of all and sad for ourselves secondly because we all loved going there so much. Just so glad no one was hurt or killed God bless all of them. We're praying for you all

I have a father and brother in the dept and they are dedicated to the town and its people everyday they are also very well trained by the state fire academy. I do agree that paying the firefighters would help to increased the amount we have BUT it is not possible to pay every single dept in the state, there are more that you think there are. The flea market was very special to alot of us and these firefighters came out in heat and some even left thier paid jobs today to go help out. So make sure you know what goes on in theses situations and the sacrifices theses men and women give up to help you or your family. This is a deep loss and I don't think it benefits anyone to say hurtful things at this point. Lets see where the fire marshall stands and go from there. Lets see if Milton can come together and lets just pray that this was an accident and not a cold mailcious person who detroyed ALOT!! Please be respectful to ALL of the fire depts that came out today to help our town.

Those people that had booths like that employee person down below me is right. I can't believe that people could be laughing or making fun of this. So... really you have no heart, you have no feelings. People that do care thank you. My mother just quit her job because she liked working there more and now this happens... If someone did this... I would like to know who and I wouldn't be suprised if it was one of those people making fun of this.

I think it is terrible how some people are making jokes about the Milton Flea Market. My family and I had a house fire several years ago, and it was a terrible experience to go through. To those individuals who are making jokes maybe you should keep them to yourself. From personal experience, a fire is a horrible, destructive force that takes away parts of your life. I am sure several of the vendors did not have insurance, and this will cause a blow to their financial status. My sincere prayers will be with those who lost everything. The Lord can be with you during this dark hour and the days to come if only you will call upon him. My Saviour, Jesus Christ, does not only save you from your sins, but He will carry you through all the battles of this world.

Rather ironic that the news report mentioned a lack of water to extinguish the fire even though the Mud River is right there and that the owner of the flea market is on the public utilities commision for Milton. There are enough empty buildings in town for some of these flea market businesses to set up in. Unfortuantely, the flea market is out of city limits and therefore Milton receives $0 from B&O taxes or sales tax. The only benefit the city gets is traffic jams at the stoplight and maybe a few extra tax dollars from McDonalds. Maybe a nice Antique mall and farmers market would do better than the vast majority of counterfeited and unlicensed items or stolen property that was routinely reclaimed from there.

I worked a booth at this flea market and I'll just say I don't appreciate all the little jokes and puns that some of these comments contain. Negative posts are entirely unnecessary right now, or ever, for that matter, and for those of you that think "poking fun" about this situation is permittable are in sad shape. I hope you're able to sleep at night. As for myself and the company I work for, I'm not sure where to go from here. I'm now out of a job and the company is set back quite a bit. I met a lot of great people here, despite what the people that deem themselves "funny" think. Really, you're just heartless. While I'll soon find a job elsewhere, some of these venders won't because they invested so much. However... There was a dog that entered the flea market every weekend through our booth. He was a stray but had a collar on. He was also really large to be a stray. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about him?

responce to about a fire dept and mindy and melody..Traing is not the same i dont care what you say volees arent held to the same standerd and required to train as much as us prof. You are sadly mistaken if you think they are. We will never know if a prof. dept could have made a difference because they dont have one. Huntington shouldnt be obligated to go help because they have a big city they are responcible for, thank god they are willing to help. We are all brothers in the fire service but there is a big difference, not everyone is a professional.

I grew up in Ripley, but my mother has lived in Milton for many years, and still does. I got a call around 1:30 today about the fire, and was just devasted. I travel to Milton several times a year, and can't remember a trip when I didn't spend a day at the Milton Flea Market looking for 'treasures' in the many antique booths. It makes me so sad to know that so many antiques have been ruined, never to be replaced, and also that so many locals have been affected by this tragedy. Truly a sad day and a huge loss for the community. I will miss it dearly.

By watching the coverage on the WSAZ TV station and the video of the fire it looks like as if this not a accident. It looked as if it was set, because the way the building was on fire in several different places. I hope that no one would do and awful thing like that. Because, people from every where love to go to the Milton Flea Market. To all the people that had boothes in there just be thankful that it didn't happen on a weekend, the place would have been full of a lot of people and probably a bunch of life would have been lost. Material things can be replaced lives and loved ones can't. My prayers go out to all the people that had booths in there. God Bless You All!

I was practically raised in that flea market!! Mt father took me there nearly every weekend as a child and as an adult I have frequently taken my own children there as well. This is such a sad and tragic event. The only saving grace is that no one has been injured from what I understand. Words cannot express how saddened I am at the loss of this establishment. I can really only shake my head in amazement and astonishment.

Posted by: Chris on Sep 10, 2008 at 03:37 PM
I think we can all agree that it was a blessing that the fire didn't happen while there were hundreds of people there. It would be a nightmare if that had happened on a Saturday afternoon when people let their kids move ahead of them while they shop. A true blessing! It's also a blessing that no one was injured or killed today. We should look at things with a 'glass half full' attitude.

Posted by: About fire dept on Sep 10, 2008 at 03:32 PM
Someone here said something about Milton not having a full-time fire dept. Well I'm sure it didn't take other Cabell Co depts including one of the many in Huntington to get there to help them and Ona - it looked like it went up so fast that it wouldn't have been any different if they DID have one All towns and villages SHOULD have them that's true but as we all know, with budget problems and very little money that's not likely unless the Feds and State give them grants to do so which is ALSO very unlikely. All America wants to do to help fix/repair/build infrastructure or fund police, fire and rescue depts is to send BILLIONS overseas especially Iraq to help THEM be safe, not us I think they should let others take care of themselves including Iraq with those BILLIONS of dollars in PROFIT they're making in oil and start taking care of Americans There are small and med sized towns/villages and even cities across this country that are in dire need of funding for this

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 10, 2008 at 03:31 PM
We was just there Sunday and first time we have been in months, wasn't going to go and decided too, sure glad we did. Such a loss, hope someone catches who done this if it was arson. It's hard to believe it's actaully gone. i practically grew up at the flea market until I became older and I just started going back. It's just hard to believe the heart of milton is gone but at least no lives were lost. My girlfriend worked at the jewelry show and I feel sorry for the people who owned the vendor and for everyone who put everything they had into their vendors througout it. Such a loss it will be greatly missed

Posted by: Mindy on Sep 10, 2008 at 03:29 PM
In response to the comment made about this area not having a "professional" fire department, I assure you that volunteer fire fighters go through state regulated training and certifications processes, just as regular paid firefighters do. So rest assured the volunteers that respond to emergencies are professional.

six years ago in December my husband and I adopted a little kitten out of a crowded cage at the flea market. She turned out to be a true family member, every time we would go by the market we'd say "thats where we got Bella". I am so sad for the vendors since I am sure that many people just lost their entire lively hoods. Hopefully it can be rebuilt soon.

Posted by: Tim on Sep 10, 2008 at 03:29 PM
I am greatful for no one being injured in the fire or putting it out, but this is a very good example of why all public structures such as this need a sprinkler system, just think if this had happened on a sunday when it was crowded and the chimney effect of this fire and how many people would have been killed, thank god this isn't the case and I hope that or law makers may look at this and make changes in the laws.

Posted by: Casey on Sep 10, 2008 at 03:27 PM
My fiance and I used to go to this flea market all the time. He too, like Kelly's husband, was really into history and bought a lot of war stuff (axes, spears, etc.), probably from the same vendor. I feel so bad for the vendors who have lost their businesses and their merchandise. This is devastating. How did this happen? The flea market was such a big attraction for Milton. When you think of Milton, you think of the flea market and all of the unique treasures you could find there. God bless the fireman, police, news reporters, and everyone else involved in trying to put out the fire and keep us all updated on what is happening. Thank you. We deeply appreciate it. For all of the vendors, you are all in my prayers and I can only hope that you will be able to pick up the pieces and move on. There is no doubt that you have put your time, money, and your lives into your businesses and we have greatly appreciated your services throughout the years. This is such a shame.

Where are all you "guys" with your jokes, now? Okay, we've all called it the "Milton Mall" and made flea market jokes, but do you absolutely NO SENSE?! This is, indeed a tragedy. So many people, families, have been devistated by this. What might be junk to you has paid the bills for many of these hard WORKING people. Are you jokers willing to lend a helping hand, or donated money to help out these vendors and their families. I'd venture a "no" to that. This is a sad event, but even sadder are people like you who think it's funny. There's an old say, "what goes around, comes around."

Make fun of the flea market if you must. But obviously you have been there to make such statements. Perhaps you are afraid to admit that you have been there! The most fun I have had there is people watching. I have even found parts for my van that would have cost me a great deal more at some retail store. I needed tools after my divorce, found what I needed for 20 bucks. Where else in the world can you find everything and anything. IT IS sad. But, those of you who obviously have nothing better to do than make themselves feel all high and mighty, go ahead. Those of us who feel comfortable in our skins forgive you for being ignorant!

I didnt go there much some of the people's prices were higher than the Huntington mall's. It kind of took the fun out of it. I remember when Flea markets use to be like yard sales everything was dirt cheap. its sad that it went up in flames!

sad situation, hillarious comment!

We had a booth for years there and loved it. It put the food on our table. But the breakers were constantly kicking off because of electricity problems. Im sure the owner probably had insurance but I doubt any of the vendors had any, now theyve lost everything!

I would like to know, How do you manage to lose a Firetruck ? Fire in general is hot and you never park that close to it. Geesh!

Posted by: Hillfiger on Sep 10, 2008 at 02:47 PM
Wow! I will miss the bargains on take off Tommy stuff there. Now i guess i will have to save up for the real stuff. Do you think lucky the cat could have started the fires? I loved that cat too. Hopefully he will leg it out of there.

This is a horrible tragedy, especially for the individuals who lost their merchandise and potential livelihood. I am very grateful that nobody was injured and the WSAZ webchannel coverage was very informative. All of the firefighters deserve our thanks for their efforts and success in preventing the fire from spreading to nearby residents. I loved this place very much and had many wonderful memories that will always be cherished. Tomorrow is going to be a difficult day because I lost my dear friend Paul seven years ago during the attack at the Pentagon. Wasn't expecting today to be difficult as well.

I think it pretty obvious what happened I mean the fire started in about three different places and this is coming from a volenteer firefighter of 20 years. I dont know what somebody had against this great place but I can tell by the way it burned down this is arson.

Several years ago I got blood clots in both lungs originating in my legs. I nearly died and was very weak for a long, long time. I couldn't walk more than a few feet without collapsing, my legs were too weak to hold me up. For 2 years, I couldn't go anywhere that didn't have wheelchairs available. Finally my doc said I was ready to start strengthening and wanted me to walk to build myself back up. We went to Milton every chance we got. With benches or chairs placed every few feet, I was able to walk, rest, then walk some more. For months that was my hangout - even in the winter I was able to walk those aisles and eventually leave that wheelchair behind. Thanks to all of you at Milton Flea Market - you gave me back my life. You will be sorely missed. We pray for each of you who lost so much and hope someday to have you back in our lives.

The loss of the Milton Flea Market is such a tragedy for the entire community! My husband and I have enjoyed visiting the market for many years. I am truly thankful that no injuries have been reported, and I pray that each person who has lost a business can recover! I really hope the flea market can be rebuilt and can be a success again. Thank you, WSAZ, for your continuing coverage!

This is really awful. What would it take to rebuild?

Posted by: Tim on Sep 10, 2008 at 02:26 PM
I remember buying a newspaper from Dec. 6, 1864 that contained Civil War news for myself, and a Nov. 8, 1769 newspaper with the British tax stamp on it for my girlfriend, both from the Milton Flea Market. A few things I bought from there are even on loan to a war museum inside the old Nitro High School. There are a few people around here who snub their noses at the idea of a flea market. I guess now they'll never know what they were missing.

Posted by: Kimberly on Sep 10, 2008 at 02:25 PM
I will so miss the Milton Mall. I always bought those fake knock off purses from the china people. I got so many good deal there and the purses never smelled funny like the ones you by on Hal Greer Blvd. I will miss you MILTON MALL RIP

Thanks to WSAZ for the coverage and to all the fire fighters for trying to save it. Big loss for our town. People came from miles around just to go to the flea market!

Response to concerned in Hurricane...all fire Dept's are trained the same way. All the fire dept's are professional whether they're Volunteer or paid. My opinion Milton is one of the best ones...have you taken a gander at some of the other departments? Come on...Thanks to all the hard working guys out there who volunteer their time in times like this!! There are an awful lot of lazy people out there that just like to sit back and complain how you do your job, not what you guys do. Best to you all! My thoughts and Prayers are with the people that have lost so much!

i saw that huntington fire was covering the rest of cabell co., i dont think that is fair to the firefighters or citizens of huntington. If i lived in huntington i would blow a gasket if the protection i was paying for was not there because they had to cover a volunteers area, if they wanted or needed their area covered they should have a paid department and not rely on volunteers who might not be there when needed

My husband and I have been to the market the last few saturdays for a couple of months. THIS IS SUCH A BUMMER! My husband is really into history and has bought a lot of old war stuff from a few vendors. Some things were the last of their kind that you will never be able to find again. We were just there and bought all 7 dwarfs from the couple that had the ceramic shop. I hate to think about all the blood, sweat, and tears that the vendors put into their products. I truly think someone had to of started this tragedy. Our hearts go out to everyone involved. and many many thanks to the brave emergency crews on the scene. GOD BLESS!!

It's hard to think of how many people this has hurt. I'm glad no lives were lost, but there were full-fledged bookstores, carpet stores, hunting supply stores, craft booths, and even a grocery store inside that thing. To me, it's just a (hopefully temporary) loss of a good place to spend some time on the weekends, but to many others, it's a loss of most or all of their income. I'm sure shelters can be put up quickly to restore some of the business, but the loss of inventory from their anchor stores will hurt for a long, long time.

Posted by: dS on Sep 10, 2008 at 02:06 PM
what a horrible loss. my heart goes out to all the vendors and us regulars to the market. what a sad, sad tragedy.

I agree I feel terrible for everyone, I grew up in Ona and spent several year worth of happy afternoons at the Flea Market. SHAME on those making fun-go back to your over priced gap infested commercialized commerce center malls! SOME of us LOVED the unique finds at the Flea market. I am trying to get together with friends who have bands and such and maybe do a benefit soon b/c I was talking to a booth owner, someone who luckily has a store in Huntington to fall back on for income but he was saying how for most of the people there that WAS their livelyhood-you earn even 200$/weekend for 4 weekends and thats what u live off of. Those poor people will have nothing now, and alot of their stuff was handmade and they cant just go out and order more IF and WHEN they even get any insurance money. Lets come together as a community again Huntington area, like we did after the Emmons fire (no i am NOT comparing yes that was WORSE) and help out our neighbors!

I just got home from class and when I got on the interstate at 29th street coming from Huntington I could see the smoke. Be careful if you are driving on the interstate. Several people are slowing to look at Milton and there are State Police in the East bound lanes. Be very careful!! I'm so glad this didn't happen on a weekend. I was there last weekend and it was so crowded. As fast as this went up, there would have been several people die I'm sure. I hope that the vendors has insurance on their things. They will be the only ones to make it out, looks like from the pictures. This truly looks like arson to me, or an explosion from the methane gas that the owner never took care of!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone their is so nice and friendly. I feel so sorry for all the renters that lost all their items. And for alot of them their booths was their only income that they had. I had just met a woman there last weekend who has a booth there and that was her income and she told me that her son had passed away last year and she was selling flowers and odds and ends to buy him a headstone for his grave. When i seen this on the news this morning her face popped up in my head just remembering her tears rolling down her face while she was telling me about how her son passed away and how hard she is trying to get items in her booth too sell to make the money for her sons headstone. God Bless Her & Everyone Else!!! You all are in my thoughts and prayers!!!

Why was it so important to cut away from the fire to show a 40 year old "Andy Griffith Show"?

I'm with Zel. This is so sad! I feel SO bad for all the vendors and lovely folks there. Just hoping & praying that no one was injured or worse. Were there pets/animals for sale there too? Haven't been there for awhile but I know there used to be. I sure hope there wasn't. Just a very very sad day for all of us around Huntington, Milton, Ona and surrounding area. It's a landmark to all of us & I'm so sad it's gone. Such a loss BUT as long as no one was hurt or killed or any animals/pets then as bad as the rest of the loss is, it can always be replaced. God be with all the firefighters, police and rescue personnel there too. To all of you onscene and those who have lost their merchandise as well as the wonderful buildings, you all have our thoughts & prayers. Bill Murray! Stay SAFE!

Very sad. We also enjoyed many times spending our time and money there. Very sad for the people who ran their businesses there. Everyone we dealt with always was so nice.

OH NO! NOT THE MILTON MALL!

Posted by: john on Sep 10, 2008 at 12:29 PM
All no, the Milton Mall is no more. I guess the people of Milton will have to find another form of entertainment now.

I think this is so tragic.

I WANT TO KNOW WHO STARTED THIS FREAKIN' FIRE AND WHY!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!!?

Posted by: Tessie on Sep 10, 2008 at 12:24 PM
I had to see it to believe it. This is devastating. I am just thankful no one was inside. My mother just started her business at MIlton. I'm sure she will get the business rolling again, but it will be difficult. I am keeping every vendor in my prayers and I hope that you will too.

This will be a huge loss not only to Milton, but Cabell Co, and so many people that had their businesses located inside the flea market. I'm so sorry about this loss. My family had many fun afternoons shopping at the flea market

Posted by: Debbie Q on Sep 10, 2008 at 11:59 AM
This is terrible. We have friends that have booths there that we got to know at the flea market in Ashland. I hope everyone is ok & that these businesses can recover from this. Some of these people this is their only income.
