UPDATE @ 3:45pm
The Montgomery Police Chief released a statement Monday saying the investigation has been turned over to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.
"The City of Montgomery takes the allegations of misconduct leveled against members of the Police Department as a serious matter, however, the right of due process and rule of law must be observed to insure that all parties are treated fairly and impartially," Pete Lopez said.
MONTGOMERY, W.VA (WSAZ) -- A Montgomery police officer was fired and another officer was suspended after they were accused of beating a black man Friday night.
Twan Reynolds and his wife, Lauren, accused Shawn Hutchison and Matthew Leavitt of repeatedly hitting Twan Reynolds over the head Friday night with a blackjack, kicking him in the back and spraying his eyes with mace. They also say Leavitt repeatedly used a racial epithet against Reynolds, and Lauren Reynolds accused Leavitt of licking her neck during an interrogation and making derogatory comments. The officers and Lauren Reynolds were white.
Montgomery Mayor Jim Higgins said he fired Hutchinson Saturday for insubordination. Higgins said he would decide later about Leavitt, who also faces an insubordination charge.
Leavitt denied that he did anything improper.

Very well said!!! I agree 100%
PJ: 1 reason that black on white crimes arent seen in the media as much is b/c its not treated the same. If youre white & a black person beats you then you can consider them guilty w/o a doubt so it doesnt need this kind of attention. Now if its flipped the other way around then white people want to defend the white person no matter what, in this case cops & thats not fair. If this man & his wife didnt make an uproar about this then im sure it wouldve gone unpunished & the cops wouldve been let go to continue their abuse. I believe that this case got the attention it deserved. Its very sad that racism is still an issue in 2008. I think sometimes if youre black or of a diff race its easier for you to understand & sympathize w/these situations than some1 white who doesnt face these issues & uses ones race against them & want to accuse them of lying or being guilty, i mean its not like this would be the first racist or racist cop issue so lets cut the victims a break & pay some respect.
To PABLO: i want to 1st congratulate you for your comment on referring to THIS case b/c thats the 1st time you've done that & thats what matters BUT nowhere did i say that my friend(cop) said that was true in THIS case. i was speaking in GENERAL that he said you CAN NOT refer to it as a routine traffic stop if the car is already parked. Maybe i shouldve said that though since its the obvious truth that they were already parked(per witnesses.) Also i dont know why you said that everyone in here is saying that they "heard" the cops were bad, b/c most comments i've seen are from ones who have dealt w/them personally or know them. I for 1 have dealt w/them on way more than 1 occassion & CAN speak from personal experience. Take it from me, I have nothing to gain from this so i have absolutely NO reason to lie. This is a fine example of power being abused & in the worse way. Im surprised of how many people are defending these cops.
