PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Fire officials believe a fire that killed two young Parkersburg girls began in a first floor dining room near a gas fired wall heater.
The fire happened at a duplex on St. Mary's Avenue around 3 p.m. Saturday.
Four-year-old Aurhyauna Keel and two-year-old Ayane Keel died in the fire.
Three-year-old Anton Keel was rescued by a neighbor. He was treated and released from a local hospital for smoke inhalation.
The children’s father, Dustin Keel tried to get the sisters out, but was turned back by the fire He was later arrested on an unrelated charge.
"You know this fire was a huge tragedy., and Mr. Keel's pending legal issues are extremely unfortunate. But it has nothing to do with him or this fire. This is a matter that a warrant was issued in circuit court on January 30 and we have by state law to execute that warrant," says Sergeant Greg Collins with the Parkersburg Police Department.
On March 30, 2009 Keel pleaded guilty to one count of delivery of a controlled substance. He faced five years in prison, but instead served 161 days, and received three years probation.
"The rules of his probation were rules that are given to anybody that is released on probation. And in this particular warrant there were 22 different allegations of alleged violations of his probation," says Sergeant Collins.
Firefighters said the children's mother was out of town at the time at the time of the fire.
The two girls killed in the fire were four-year-old Aurhyauna Keel and two-year-old Ayane Keel.
Three-year-old Anton Keel, who was rescued by a neighbor, has now been released from the hospital after being treated for smoke inhalation.
Their father Dustin Keel was arrested and taken to jail on an unrelated charge.
Firefighters tell WSAZ.com that it happened on St. Mary's Ave. around 3p.m.
The two girls killed in the fire were ages two and four.
Another three-year-old boy was rescued from the burning home by a neighbor.
Their names have not been released at this time.
Firefighters said the children's mother was out of town but that her boyfriend was in the home at the time of the fire, but made it out safe.
The W.Va. state fire marshal's office is now investigating the fire.
There is no word on what started the fire.
