Heavy showers moved through Paintsville, Kentucky on Sunday morning. City road crews were forced to shut down several streets due to high water. And although the creeks were quick to recede, they left behind a massive mess.

Brenda Wright never imagined her home church would take the brunt of a storm.

“I came over here and the water was almost level with the top of the step,” said Wright. “It was devastating."

Bill Johnson is the senior deacon at the Paintsville United Baptist Church. He was first on the scene Sunday morning.

Church members and 911 dispatchers say as much as three inches of rain fell in just about an hour. As the water gushed down Church Street, it was too much for the drains to handle, which left the water with nowhere to go.

Folks with the river volunteer fire department helped pump out mud and the muck. But, as the waters receded, the picture only got worse.

What's left now is a giant mess and tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Still, church members are thankful nobody was hurt.

It’s a church devastated by disaster, but relying on prayer and a promise to rebuild.

Some nearby businesses were also flooded, and church members say it'll take them several months to clean up this mess. If you'd like to give money or donate your time, just contact the Paintsville United Baptist Church.
