GRAYSON, Ky. (WSAZ) -- State troopers in Kentucky say a man who was driving under the influence is lucky to be alive.

Kentucky State Police say 44-year-old Charles Kouns of Olive Hill was driving north on Damon Branch Road near Grayson when he lost control, entered a creek and hit natural gas line.

Troopers say the Kouns was able to get out the car before it burst into flames. A nearby house was also damaged by the fire.

The accident happened around 10 a.m. Friday morning.

Kouns is currently in the Carter County Detention Center.

I cannot believe this. I read the story in the Nov 5th Grayson Journal Enquirer. This guy , who happens to be a habitual DUI offender, was charged with another 1st offense DUI. KY DUI laws are not stiff enough. They should not fall off your record after 5 years. This guy should have been charged with at least a 4th offense. Then he would have stayed in jail for 1 year. But he has already bonded out and will have his license back in 90 days. Next time he might not be so lucky, and instead of hitting a gas line he might hit a car load of innocent people. Please folks, lets do what we have to do to bring about change in our KY DUI laws. The life that is saved just might be our own.

Most people don’t know that you should not drive a vehicle for at least 12 hours after you have had your last drink. It is dangerous not only for them but for others as well..

Thomas to say that you drive on that road drunk everyday is something to be really proud of. KY needs to have stiffer punishment for impaired driving. Taking their license is not near enough. How about 1 year in jail for 1st offense instead of 1 day?? Check out DUI laws in other states/countries and compare to those in KY.

this is a classic case of the how messed up the laws are he gets in an accident he gets a dui and will be let out on the streets to yet to do it again and maybe kill someone next time, the police can take his driving priveliges but thats not gonna stop him from driving if there were stiffer punishments for dui and dwi then people would think twice before putting other peoples lives n danger

Posted by: KIM on Nov 1, 2008 at 05:49 AM
HE WAS DUI! WHAT DOES A CELL PHONE HAVE TO DO WITH ANYTHING? HOW ABOUT MAYBE HE SHOULDN'T DRINK AND DRIVE?? AT LEAST THAT WOULD MAKE SENSE WITH THE STORY

its a shame that yet another drunk driver walked away and whats worse is the legal system will let him go so he can go do it again

I grew up just off of Damron Br..These days ppl just don't know how to drive anymore..He wasn't from around here but that road is very narrow. If u ever travel this road just be safe & use your head..It's not that hard to do..He deserves to be in jail. The house that burned, the lady had just bought it and had done alot of work to the home, it's very sad now she's lost everything she has worked so hard for..Maybe Carter Co. will wake up & crack down on ppl like this man, but I doubt it..Our system is worthless! Keep this lady in your thoughts & prayers, she needs all the support she can get.
