ASHLAND, KY (WSAZ) -- AK Steel announced today in a press release that it will temporarily idle its Ashland, Kentucky operations due to "the recent unanticipated and major downturn in the economy." The downturn has resulted in a lower demand for some of the company’s products.

The company says it plans to keep the facility closed until early to mid-January.

The blast furnaces will be maintained in “hot-idle” status which means the furnaces will keep going although they are not producing steel.

AK Steel services the automobile industry. The move will immediately impact 650 of the 700 union workers at the Ashland Works. Union leaders say the loss of work here will also hurt complementary businesses. The Greenup County Judge-Executive tells WSAZ.com Stein Flag Corporation has given notice of potential layoffs for workers there. Union leaders estimate this could affect at least 300 other jobs in the area.

The union says many questions remain here. Workers will either get unemployment or supplemental pay, which is the equivalent of between 50 and 80 percent of their base pay.

PRESS RELEASE: West Chester, OH, November 11, 2008—AK Steel (NYSE: AKS) announced today that it is temporarily idling its Mansfield, Ohio operations, and most of its Ashland, Kentucky operations, due to the recent unanticipated and major downturn in the economy, which has resulted in sharply lower demand for some of the company’s products. The company said that, based upon currently foreseeable market conditions, both facilities will remain idled until early- to mid-January.

AK Steel’s Mansfield Works currently employs 365 hourly and salaried men and women. The plant produces stainless flat-rolled steel which is used primarily to manufacture automotive exhaust systems. Steel production and shipping temporarily ceased at the Mansfield Works earlier this week. A small number of hourly and salaried employees will continue to maintain the operations in anticipation of a resumption of production when warranted by business conditions.

The Ashland Works produces carbon flat-rolled steel for automotive, appliance and other markets, and the plant currently employs 1,100 hourly and salaried men and women. However, about 275 of the Ashland Works employees work at the company’s coke plant, which will continue to operate, but at a reduced level. Ashland’s blast furnace, steelmaking, casting and coating operations will be idled later this month. As in Mansfield, a small number of hourly and salaried employees will continue to work maintaining the idled operations in preparation for a re-start. The company said Ashland’s blast furnace would be maintained in "hot-idle" status.

The company said it continues to evaluate all of its operations and administrative functions in light of the economic downturn, and will be prepared to adjust to continued rapidly changing conditions. That would include restarting the idled operations sooner if warranted by significantly improved business conditions.

"We remain hopeful that we will be able to return our dedicated and hard-working employees to their jobs as swiftly as possible," said James L. Wainscott, chairman, president and CEO. "Of course, that depends entirely on credit availability and consumer confidence, which are at the heart of this serious economic downturn."

Its going to get worse. I have a feeling that AK steel will not be reopening Ashland in Mid-January. It will probably be late 2009 if ever. It looks like the Auto makers will file Chapeter 11 which means that AK's buggest customer won't be needing any steel.

I am a single mother of two childern and I am lossing my job! But I do not work at Ak Steel! I work at one of the other bussnissus that are closing! You know its not right that people are willing to help just the ak workers! Value city, Lines and things and Steve and Bareys just to name a few places closing around the tri state area. Why isn't any one willing to help us and the others from there! Who cares about just the ak steel workers! There are many more people out there who need help paying the bills and trying to take care of the childern and many wount be having a Chirstmas or Thanksgiving! Look around the community and see how many other people are being effcted by the other jobs closing!! They need help too! People always say that communitys need to stick together and help each other in a time of need! Well not in this case! They mean JUST THE AK STEEL WORKERS!!!

just worked my last midnight. hey lets all just sit back with the family hold them tight and truly be thankful for all that we have. it will be nice eating thanksgivng with the family and not having to go out on evening turn afterwards. also it will be nice to be home all day christmas and not have to work evening turn. so there is a bright side if we don't focus on money alone. many people would be gracious to bring home 450.00 a week this holiday season. lets take a break for a few weeks and come back in january as better, wiser, stronger people with better families. happy holidays and go bucks..

Nothing wrong with salary or hourly. For most of the mill has great foreman NOW! You started with the disrespect on here! Look back a few posts, OH YEAH! So you got a burr up your hind -end because you didnt have enough time in for union representation so you are still bitter well get over it. People like you would be better off staying to the no-comment side these days before you step on your tongue again. And thanks for the support now.....So where are you "super engineer" employed at these days?

Posted by: Brian on Nov 19, 2008 at 06:20 PM
Ignore everthing I have posted..truth is I made some mistakes and im bitter, Sorry to waste your time.

Posted by: Brian on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:55 AM
And another thing. I respect everybody in the hourly work force that I worked with. I bent over backwards to let things slide that I shouldn't have because I didn't always beleive in the way the comapany was treating the men. Yes I signed up to be hourly. You know why, because when the contract was up in 2000 the company told me that If i didn't come into the plant and be locked in during the potential strike that I would be fired. I was originally in the union but the company said that I didn't have my time in. I tried to get the union to back me but the refused. I had no choice but to go salary because I had just moved back from Virgina. So before you go trashing me get your facts straight. I pray that everybody goes back to work.

Posted by: Hey Brian on Nov 18, 2008 at 06:08 PM
Now I see why you were laid off in 2003. It isn't the union's fault you didn't get paid overtime for what you worked. That was your stupidity. Guess all that suckn got you no where...

Brian, I am new to the company (less than 2 years service) and what Ive seen is a workforce who is very willing to work for you when you treat them like they should be with respect. I dont know your background but where I have worked in the past could have used some of these men. I am proud to stand by these men. Without them as a whole that plant would not run! And thats a solid fact. You cant pay for for knowledge and experience you have to ask.... Dont trash talk you make yourself look bad and would explain why your were cut with that attitude! Sounds like you had the cake job instead of them, I watched everyone in amasement last Fall when the real work was done. Everyone was pulling more than there weight. That furnace crew are some great men and women.

Posted by: Retbfman on Nov 17, 2008 at 09:06 PM
Hey Brian. Before you make the blast funace men look bad, you need to tell both sides of story. While maitnance was getting things ready the bf crew was waiting in the wings ready to get the job. Brute work done. Where were u when the heavy tueyer was coming out. Every body has a job at diffrent times not all can work in such cramped space at 1 time. We all help each other. Let's just all get through this tough time. Let's help each other not point fingers on who does what

To all of you people who are trashing the salary workers at AK, you don't know what your talking about. I used to work at the furnace as an engineer. All of the foreman work extremely hard (maintenance and operations.) We worked long hours and without getting paid the OT that the union guys get. At least at the furncace I would pressure test and fix leaks and help change blow pipes while some, not all, of the union guys just watched or would lay back in the lunch room. What are all of those union dues you paid getting you know. I should be mad at AK for laying me off in 2003, but I am not. I am thankful for the friends that I made while at the furnace. Those guys supported me through thick and thin. It was the best thing that ever happend to me. I am a better person and better engineer because of my experience at AK and the leadership of my boss Bill Thompson. I hope everything turns out for the best and the furncace starts up again but it is probably closed for good.

This idle shut down is stupidest thing i have ever heard of. my father works there and he works hard to help make a living nor our family. this shut down is going to hurt a lot of families. Thnks Alot!!!

Posted by: wife of hard working man on Nov 17, 2008 at 10:40 AM
I don't understand why it seems people are happy that hard working people are being laid off. My husband works hard for the money he makes. He is at AK Steel 70% of his life and his childrens. He doesn't make it to football, basketball, baseball, or softball games. Not to say all the parties he doesn't see, but in pictures. That is a sacrifice he makes to give his childern a good life. Instead of WINNIE about what you don't have try to find something better. All it takes is a pen!! Then you can get your own high horse.

Posted by: IBELIEVE on Nov 17, 2008 at 09:40 AM
My husband works at AK Steel. I Believe that God is in control and HE will work things out the way HE wants them worked out. We need to spend more time praying for our economy and the leaders at AK Steel, he's the only one that can do something about this mess. Blame is not helping anyone at this time!

Posted by: B on Nov 16, 2008 at 11:09 PM
It's very sad for me to hear the envy of some people on here. So what, the guys and gals at AK earned a decent wage!!! The hours they put in to earn it is ridiculous! My husband worked at least three 16 hour days every work week! We have four daughters to support and I was lucky enough to stay home with them because of this. The comments about $900 weekly unemployment is ridiculous!! True, we will make barely enough to keep us from getting wic for our newborn or food stamps to feed our family!! So unlike the lazy jealous bums that want to whine about how much AK employees make, these men and women worked their butts off and deserve every penny they get working or on employment! And despite what most of you may think, the majority of people working at AK are good people who would back their community in times like these instead of fuming with jealousy!! To all AK families, I wish you the best!!

Watch out Kyle you might make the company think I should do it there also.....You are giving me a good reputation thanks maybe I should be a politician instead of a Steelworker never knew I had such a great quality. You lost your job 1994 because Dick Wardrop (one of Bush's buddies) wanted to shut down Ashland Works because he hated Local 1865....This lay off is due to the current economic crisis===REFER TO ha on Nov 15, 2008 at 10:59 AM...maybe you can understand those terms....

Travis King, I should have known you would get on at AK. You were such a boot kisser at ACTC and I'm guessing you used that trait to get on at AK as well. I guess you learned one thing well at school after all.

To all of you blaming President Bush for layoffs at A.K. Steel. I lost my job at A.K. on 1/1/94 after 24 yrs.By your line of thinking I should blame President Clinton. Having hired in in 1968 I have been laided off under dems and reps. But I lost my job under a dem. But unlike lots of you I don't give presidents credit when things are good or blame him when it is bad .Please let me know if I should start blaming Bill Clinton>

Greenup, you don't know what you are talking about. First of all that is 60% total, that mean you take unemployment plus your sub pay and the total will equal 60%. It is not $900 a week and not even close if we are lucky we will make $500. That is what I'm talking about you need to understand before you start spreading rumors, and I'm not on some high horse I work hard and I support my family and last Christmas we supported another family of four so they could have a good Christmas. Thats what alot of people on hear don't understand I'm not the only person that works there that helps out others in need and this year that is not going to happen. So get all the facts before you submit a comment on hear

Posted by: rotten on Nov 15, 2008 at 09:10 PM
Who ever Wainscott is talking too is Tim Imes--I-me-s.Because Mike Hewlett would not give steelworkers jobs,so Mike Hewlett is not making deals with Wainscott, that is what Imes would do,so to our union brothers and sisters your job is safe you will not be part of a deal.

I worked for Ak for almost 5 years. These men work hard, put in forced hours of overtime, and are devoted to their jobs. I believe "Greenup" is a little ruffed over being forgotten, don't take it personally And as for "NOT A DEMOCRAT" post, I can honestly tell that YOU are completely blind. If you deliver to a company, then isn't this company (AK) making you money? And if you honestly think Obama will be worse than the worst president in history, your crazy. Either way, our country's economy is at the brink of disaster. Thanks to BUSH ECONOMICS AND NO REGULATION. For those Union workers who like to bash the union, Let me tell you to hold your tongue. If you think a NON union shop would offer you sub-pay, insurance, or a chance to even come back to work YOU ARE TOTALLY MISTAKEN. If you don't like the union, go work non-union then. It is people like you who make the union weak, they don't need you anyways. And if anyone want's to address my comment, provide your name, don't hide :)

We are very thankful for are jobs and union wages. I hope that Marathon stays strong and can keep everone working as with CSX, PCI, etc.!!! For anyone in this area or over the country to set back and imply that this is what people deserve is proof of ignorance. This is not AK problems or PCI problems this is our country and its backbone of industry falling around our feet. When Ironton Iron shut down those workers filtered into other industry in the area over time but there stress could be felt over every angle of our communtiy. This area cant afford another loss of that magnitude. And how can you people get on here and make comments about Unions and how they bring this on themselves. This area was built on Union wages and everyone has forgot the fight that was made for are working rights and the blood and tears that went to get them. We need to get over Rep. and Dem. issues and work together to fix are nation, area and future. Stop blaming and start fixing!!!!!!!! proud member of 1865!

Posted by: Travis King on Nov 15, 2008 at 05:59 PM
Like Scott C. said stop hidding behind fake names. As for "Heather the accountant" why dont you enlighten all of us how to fix this economy and the nations problems. Since you are of "higher education". I make what your husband does, and I know this beacause I have a close friend in the same line of work at KDMC. So lets get off the exaggerated pay comments. Now I know that everyone does different with lifes priorities and expenses. For you information my wife is currently in school for the so called "fallback degree" that you refer to. We watch our money close and plan thats why she quit her job at AK for a career in the medical field. Now as for you that say we who choose foreign automobiles are to blame look where large amounts of AK's product go. I for one am not ashamed of supporting myself by purchasing Toyota products. As for who to blame for the economy, everyone is to an extent. Greed has drove this more than anything and past political decision on leadership and beliefs!!!!!!

For all of you who are praying for our families I thank you very much, Obama will bring us out of this. For those of you who are saying that our families our "Over paid" maybe all you 48 year olds still living with mommy and daddy maybe you should take a break from playing video games and chating on match.com and take a trip down to Ak Steel to find out what a "Hard Working American" really means. My Father is a Union Man For Ak Steel and he works his A** off to put clothes on our backs and food on our table, so just to let you know he earns every single penny he makes. so thank for you for your support. -Rottens Daughter Daddys A Steel Worker And A Dang good one!

TO SCOTT CONLEY : Maybe you need to go back and read my comment because I didn't say anything about what you guys make. And also I do have family that has worked there for many, many years and know what you guys make. But I chose not to talk about it. And what I said about the $900 a week is the truth and you know it. You guys are getting $500 a week sub pay on top of your $400 a week unemployment check and that equals $900. DUH!!! People like you need to come off your pedestal and quit acting like your better than everybody else and trying to make everything out to be jealousy, cause it's not. I've never tried to get a job at AK and don't want one. I could care less what you make because I want to spend some time with my family and not live at AK. (Especially with the mandatory overtime, on top of that them scheduling you on your only days off) SO SCOTT, PEOPLE like you need to get over yourself and stop being so conceited and making yourself believe everybody wants to be like you.

Ok, Let me put it this way....gas prices 3.99 a gallon = Big profits for oil companies (The Bush's and CHeney's)= "putting it to the auto industry"= no orders for steel= ak layoffs...I believe this is called "trickle down" economics of Bush . . .

It sounds to me like there are alot of people that are mad because you could not get a job at AK or pass the test for employment. That is not the hourly employees fault. There are alot of people that that will be out of work and this is going to effect every business in the area one way or another. If you want your voice heard grow a pair and quit hidding behind your fake name and be a man not a coward. On another note, I'm with Rotten, Thanks to all of our Union Officals and membership. It's sad to see all these AK workers crying over having to live off of at least $900 per week. (For all of you that don't know, these people can get their unemployment checks untaxed) I'm laid off myself from Pregis. All of us that are laid off are making it on just the unemployment. It's also sad to see that the Steelworkers seemed to have forgotten about us. Ever since the big breaking news about AK layoffs, all you ever hear is how the community needs to make sure these people are fed and make sure their children have a good Christmas, and BLAH BLAH BLAH They don't care about all the families from the other local plants that are laid off. Only because they are worried that the AK families are not going to be spending as much money now for the holidays. Just remember, AK families aren't the only ones having a tough time. How many children never have as good a Christmas as we do? There are many parents that are sick and can't work, or don't have the education to have a good paying job

As a child I have seen Armco lay my dad off 2x and never be called back with 18 1/2 yrs. Now as a 32 yr old woman, wife and mother of 4, I am seeing my husband laid off. Did I ever think I would be in my parents shoes. NO! But here I am. I am a stronger person today because of it. My family taught me that FAMILY is what is important and as long as we have each other and our prayers we WILL make it. I remember my dad rolling coins to pay for my prom dress, charging my college education and holding his head up high. AND that is what my family will do and we WILL make it. Hopefully this won't last but if it does we will get through it and be STRONGER people. Everyone needs to remember that NO JOB is secure. God deals us what we can handle and my family and other AK familes will get through this. I will pray for all of us and even for the corporate AK people that they will make the right choices to call us back to work. Everyone needs to be thankful and not judgemental.

Posted by: Sarah on Nov 14, 2008 at 08:29 PM
A few of the comments below do not seem clear to me. Our country is going through a tough time right now and the AK layoffs is a result of that. Just like everyone else in this country that is employed, these people work for one reason - to provide for themselves and their families. With 600 being laid off, this will have a major impact on the area; meaning that 600 families that normally contribute to the local economy by shopping and dining, will now be able to do so on a limited basis, if not at all. Those workers may not have a job either if the economy doesn't get a boost. So for those of you who have jobs be thankful and be careful of the words chosen to express your concerns because the things that you say about the ones that are laid off today, could be saying the same things about you tomorrow. We need to extend our support not only to our families and friends but to our country and to our new president.

I am a wife to an Ak worker and I know about the sacrifice all these workers make. I pity all of you that are making the negative comments. You should be ashamed and remember 'what goes around comes around' so watch what you say! I am praying for all the families and I know that GOD will take care of all of us. It will be hard for some, but thankfully my husband has saved for times such as this and we are prepared. We don't have a high dollar home or high doller vehicles. I drive a 4 year old suv and he drives an 8 year old truck. We have never tried to compete with the Jones' or lived above our means. I have been married to my husband for 3 years now and have never got to spend a full day of Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years with him but I will this year. He has made many sacrifices over the 8 years he has been with AK but he does it for his family. I pity all you who don't know what a real job is and what hard work is all about. AK families you are in our prayers.

Both my grandfather and father worked for AK Steel for a VERY long time. My dad was injured on the job, and it took a very long time for Ak to take care of him....but they did. My point is, I know what it is like when the layoffs occur, and I will be keeping all the employees and families in my prayers. Ignore the negative comments about your possessions and hourly wages, because that isn't what this is about. God be with you all and have a safe a wonderful holiday season!

I worked 30 years in Weirton Steel in the northern panhandle. My company went bankrupt and took all of the benefits from the retirees and sent our pensions to the PBGC. "Corporate Greed" was the culprit in our case, the CEO's preach economics and current market demand, but when was the last time you saw a CEO give up their bonus or Golden Parachute because of the economy or market allowing men and women to keep their jobs? If we paid CEO's based on profitability and increasing the business viability they would probably make just above minimum wage. But without the working class to do their bidding they could not achieve a thing. So, to all of the men and women that have been laid off or lost their jobs I feel your pain and I truly wish you all good blessings in finding stable employment. To the CEO's Do a lot of praying this holiday season and maybe you will find the knowledge and the heart to give up some benefits so people can work and be prosperous.

I wouldn't start whining about Big Oil if I were you, BlameWho? on Nov 13, 2008 at 04:49 PM. We don't have much else left around here now. What will happen if Marathon packs up and leaves town as well? Big Oil has paid for my special needs child to have therapy and medical care as well as put food on our table and enabled us to pay our taxes and contribute a little to charity. We don't live in a big, fancy house or drive a Jag. The overwhelming majority of the people that work for Big Oil are working class people who give most of their time to the company just like the workers at AK. It is shameful that this has been turned into a partisan issue when it is simply a human issue concerning our friends and neighbors, regardless of political affiliation. Good luck to everyone.

My late husband was a UNION man. The union took a big chunk of his pay for dues. For what? When he was hurt on the job, and unable to work, Union did not pay my utilities, food, or living expenses. And seven years later, I am still fighting for the money he personally paid into a retirement. Funny, how the company can lose those records. I would tell the people at AK, educate yourselves in a high demand field.

i would like to say to everyone praying for us ak workers is greatly appreciated. also i would like to say to those who call us union workers whinny and uneducated that is for from the truth. i am very well educated as are many of my coworkers.however i am not commenting to run anyone down. if i were it would be the salary ppl and i just might give u the truth about them. however this is going to be difficult for many families not only ak employees but also the bus we spend our earned money at. yes we do make a good living and that is thanks to our union. if had not been for unions ppl who work under the conditions we do would not make the wages we do, nor would the salary ppl or anyone else in working america. so to those of you who had evil things to say about us plz refrain as we are human like anyone else and we have families who rely on our income to feed them clothe them and keep them a place to sleep at night that is safe.

i just want to say i am blown away from some of the stuff people have said to and about these people and there families, they did nothing wrong, none of this was there fault, this could happen to any one of us, and it might just come back around to the ones who have no heart and feelings of what these people are going through right now, if you think that way about this situation the best thing for you to do is keep it to your self, if thats what makes you feel good about yourself. and to every single family and people in your family that this has affected, be strong, ignore these people and have faith, god will take care of you, and god bless!

Wow, I read every post on here and I'm at a loss for words. Heather and others need to understand that not everyone can get an "education" and misfortune can come to anyone at anytime (including her). Folks should try and take the high road on this subject. This is not the time to give your two sense (joke) for/against Unions. This is a time to reach out and encourage those who have lost their livelihoods; to use every tool available to them to overcome this unfortunate situation. Call upon friends and family, take that hand up from the gov't or your local church. Sit down and make out a plan of attack. Update your resume and post it on web sites like Monster.com & Careerbuilder.com; they have tens of thousands of job opportunities around the Country and yes, around the World. Don't be afraid to seek employment outside of the tri-state area....I did years ago and have no regrets! As one door closes others will open so long as you are looking for them. God Bless & keep the faith!

How can some of you people complain about "The Union" when we are living in a country where Big Oil can make $14.8 billion profit in one quarter and some companies are paying CEOs millions of dollars to drive them into bankruptcy. And now we the working men/women are called upon to bail them out with our tax dollar. I would venture to say that there is not one union worker making $40 mill plus a year let alone $14.8 billion in three months. I'm not saying Unions are flawless, but they could never compare to the greed of big business. I wonder what the CEO of GM makes comparied to the CEO of Nissan?

I was reading the headlines and found the comments listed under the AK story. My son works at AK steel and yes he makes a good salary. But to those of you who thinks he stands around waiting on a light bulb to be changed by someone else, you don't know my son. He was taught if he had a job to do to do it well. He does not stand around just to collect a pay check. He has been laid off different times at different jobs and to those of you who are afraid you will have to pick up his slack when he goes to the welfare line, don't fear. He goes looking for a job. He has never drawn out completely his workers comp and hopefully he won't this time either.

I want to know if any of the people who have made the rude and hurtful comments have ever worked swing shift. If not let me educate you. My husband has been at AK for the last five years and he works 7 days of evening turn, 7 days of day turn and then 7 days of midnight turn. If he is lucky he will get 2 days off in those turns. After his last midnight turn he gets what everybody calls a long weekend which lasts from thursday morning & ends when he goes in on tuesday evening turn. There has been many times that my husband has worked midnight to day turn. Worked day turn & then had to go back in on midnight turn & has worked numerous days straight without a day off. I haven't mentioned that we can not plan anything 2 days ahead of schedule because if we do then in most cases we either have to reschedule or I have to go on with whatever plans we had. For example our kids birthday parties, Christmas mornings & Thanksgiving dinners. So the extra money they make is nothing in comparison.

I work at AK Steel and am very blessed to have this job. AK does not OWE any of us ANYTHING we went to them for a job they didn't search for us. NOBODY has a PROMISE of tommorrow. We have to take one day at a time and pray to GOD that our economy turns around. But come on people they HAVE to help ot the auto industry as well as they shall its just a matter of when!! As a community we should stand together..I don't feel hard toward a doctor because they earn more than me, I say more power to you. Fellow co-wokers stand tuff we will make it through this. Its bad ALL OVER not just AK . No one should base their lives on OVERTIME PAY for we KNEW it would END SOMEDAY...Soo that day is here tighten the reins REMEMBER YOUR NEEDS not your WANTS it makes me ashamed for fellow workers and families to write of such hardships when MANY PEOPLE would LOVE to get paid what we will draw while we are OFF!!

I was reading comments and I wanted to remark on the poster that was concerned about Toyota. I have family that works there and they are hurting just as bad as everyone else. The plant in Indiana they referenced was shut down. The large SUVs they make are no longer being produced, they have laid off ALL temporary employees and have consolidated MANY departments causing many to lose jobs. They no longer work overtime and they have cut their production numbers drastically. I feel bad for all AK workers and their families, it will be a rough christmas for all. Unfortunately everyone will feel the direct effect of this horrible economy, THANK YOU GEORGE BUSH.. Now is the time to pull together and help each other out. Lets keep each other in our prayers. God will take care of what we need. He will not put us through what He knows we cannot get through. God bless everyone.

I have sat here for the past hour reading everyones comments, it is really sad that in our small tristate area that everyone would rather point fingers than to pull together and help one another make it through. My husband is sick and we have been living on sick pay since Sept. which is half of unemployment, somehow someway we are managing to make it, we have 3 children who are very understanding. And the ones who have mentioned that we all should save for a rainy day, that is not always easy to do when you have 3 kids, bills, house, medical bills. And believe me I don't have 50 pairs of jeans and new shoes. We live as simple as possible even when he was working and times are just hard. I promise if you have faith it will find a way of working out. My dad works at the mill and my husbands cousin and many good friends, it is effecting everyone no mattter how hard or if you had a nest egg to fall back on. Good luck to all. And trust in GOd. Stay strong!

Let's just hope things in this area get better because it is going to be hard for us all just not AK Steel. I don't see it getting back where it was at this time this year. AK Steel employees need to come down to earth and find work somewhere else. Leaving the area is all there is left......

I agree with Local 1865, the Company always has the upper hand! This slow down is a result of the economy and sad to say but EVERYONE is feeling the effects of this. It makes me sick to hear ppl whining about union workers. Until you know the risks involved at these places you need to shut your mouths. If i had to work at a place that was high risk and where over 50% of its retirees died or had cancer i would expect a high salary too! Ppl need to be thankful for what they have and not go around comparing their lives to other people. GOOD GRIEF! Those guys have families and bills just like everyone else, and they work for what they have same as you and me. Ppl need to realize that unions are good, they protect you, they are your family. I know that if something happened at my work they would say good bye nice knowing ya. There would not be anyone there to protect me. That is a fact! Time will tell on this one i am afraid.

I am sad to see people lose their jobs but it was bound to happen. Too many people living "high on the hog" at the top and mismanaging finances that eventually falls back on the little guy. I deliver to AK Steel almost daily and I frankly thought it would shut down before now. I have never seen a plant in such physical disrepair. Seems that it hasn't had any upgrades in 50 years and basically looks like a pile of scrap metal at this point. It is one of the filthiest, and unhealthiest work environments I have ever seen not to mention the polution that it spews into the community. I can hardly stand to drive past there because of the horrible sulfer and other odors. Sure doesn't make me want to stop at McDonalds to eat! In the big picture there is more to come thanks to this wonderful election where so many blinded people put a man at the top that is going to bankrupt the government as well. Congratulations we now live in an "Obama-nation"!

My dad worked at AK and when it was Armco. He earned a comfortable living and struggled like everyone else at the holidays. It is called sacrifice. My dad managed to put two daughters through college, give us a good Christmas year after year, but there was not a lot left at the end of the paycheck. It is hard to do when cost rise every minute and paychecks disappear when you need them the most. Good luck AK workers. May we all find relief from this nightmare soon.

This is to J: Get a life. What is your deal? Did you lose a wife or girlfriend to a union man or what? Do you work or do we pay for your way of life? You evidently know very little about unions. Also, the union doesn't guarantee anybody's job. Union people are still being fired for various reasons and some for none at all. Without the union they would have no chance of returning to work. And we also are not thugs any more. Those would be on the corporate side now. The Company always has the upper hand.

I think people that don't know what they are talking about shouldn't comment. Right now we need possitive thinking not rude and stupid comments from jealous people. And that is all you are is jealous when you make the comments that you make. My husband works hard and long hours, and NO IT IS NOT VOLUNTEERING as someone had said. He does it because he wants to make sure that we are going to be ok and so that we can have things. We don't live a fancy life, but we both have worked hard to get everything that we have. We have had no help from anyone but us. People should thing about that old saying, if you dont have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all. We will all be ok and things will work out somehow. To everything the is a purpose and a season. Our prayers are with those who are in charge of this situation as well as the state or our great nation.

To all the families: My husband has been at AK for almost two years. This is the fourth time since we have been married that he has been layed off. When he hired on at AK we were so thankful because we thought it would NEVER happen again. The last time he was laid off was two years ago, right before Christmas. We didn't know how we would make it through, but by the grace of God, somehow we did. At the time, I was working, and I ended up getting a Christmas bonus and we were out on the day before Christmas Eve buying our four children's Christmas presents. Now, I'm not working, so I'm sure that this will be more devastating than before. However, I know we will get through it, just as the rest of the families will. All these families need to stick together, and try to be positive. At least be thankful that your hubbys will be able to spend Christmas with you because I know a lot of them have not been able to in the past. All of the negative comments need to stop. It won't help a thing.

How we live, what kind of cars we drive, the clothes we wear is none of your business. Think of it this way, when your husband is home on Christmas morning watching his kids open gifts, or when he's at every ball game; mine is at the mill.....working to pay YOUR school taxes......$1500 last year and we live in OhIO!!! Not to mention 35% of his salary goes to uncle sam to pay for KY's outstanding welfare rate! These men and women earn every penny they get at AK and more.....they are in unimaginable heat in the summer, freezing cold in the winter. you need to quit being mean to people and sympathize a bit. Nobody wants to be laid off, we just want to take care of our families!

AK Steel previously paid Hritz $250,000 and Wardrop $650,000 of the almost $63 million combined total both are due. The bakehard material is so hard to run when you have certain inspectors working. I knew we were in big trouble when they took my golf cart from me last year.

Posted by: J on Nov 12, 2008 at 07:30 PM
I sympathize with the workers laid off, but you can thank your union. Artificially inflating wages and guaranteeing that no one loses their job no matter how lazy, unsafe or unproductive they are has bankrupted not only the steel industry, but also the auto industry. If your union is such an awesome group, let them task the risks and provide you a job. They were just thugs muscling in on money that wasn't theirs to begin with.

Now that we are over Tom the Twit. For those arguing about Union. Let me shed some light to the subject. Check the history: The Ex-CEO and the Ex-President of AKSteel (obviously not Union members), the Board had to pay them 30 million dollar EACH severance package by their contract. And you want to get on the little Union worker that is laid off? When the Board fired them they had to pay them 30 mil to be FIRED. The stock at that time was worth $2.00 a share; a few years later the stock shot up to 70.00 share on the sweat of the union workers and what you consider them being rich wages. Doesn't come close to the Corporate salary. Do your math for what 2 men recieved for 700 workers. GO JOE!!!!!!!!

I am an AK worker who drives a long commute to the plant everyday. There are alot of employees who have given up alot to keep this plant running. They have sacrificed friends, family, church, holidays and family events. You would think that a company of this magnitude would show some appreciation towards this group of individuals that have helped set and break there own world record mulitiple times. Especially, when there Middle Town Plant is still running. You will never find a better group of diversed workers anywhere in the United States that will work harder than the ones at Ashland Works.

I made the comments about Walmart, Taco Bell needing workers. If I were laid off, I sure wouldn't sit around and belly-ache about it. I'd go out and get some sort of job even if it meant Walmart, Taco Bell, or other retail job. $8.00/hr is better than $0.00/hr don't ya think?

OK, I really believe the ones that are whinning are the ones that don't get our charity for Christmas. My husband has worked there for years and we always gave to the poor. Now it is time to take care of each other. AK Steel will not do it and the UNION is out, my youngest is 21 and I am going thru the closets looking for games and clothes. If you have small children and need Christmas for them we need to figure out something, we need to show what AK workers and their families are made out of. Lets get this going to give the kids a Christmas and maybe we can show each other there is hope.

Yes, the employees of AK do live well, and I'm very thankful to have a job there. But let me remind everyone that we all work hard and we earn every dime we are paid. It sounds to me like the people who are complaining about AK employees and how we live are the people who are jealous of us and are probably on welfare. So instead of talking bad about us, you might want to wish we could get back so you can continue to draw your monthly check.

My husband works at AK and I would be willing to bet that he has had more education than you. As a matter of fact, as a business major in college, he looked into accounting and decided it would not provide much income in this area. I'm glad that you and your husband can handle it. However, to assume that these men are uneducation and imply they are less than you and your husband is a disgrace. My husband decided to work at AK not because we want to live lavishly, but because we want to pay our bills. I think as your second child comes into this world (I will be praying for its health) that you will realize the cost of one child vs the cost of 2 is a big difference. To those of you that said maybe these employees should consider their income before they had more children, I'm sure the majority did. What criteria should they consider in your eyes? I'm sure you might say their jobs/income, right? You make no sense. You couldn't afford to live either if you lost your job.

Although I have not cared much for AK since they forced my father to retire early years ago. I can't belive the comments made by people who care more about what people have then what they have to lose. So what if people worked hard or didn't work hard to get the nice things they have. I believe everyone tries to get the best for there family. What does education have to do with the jobs they have. These people were hired because they were capable of performing the work. Not all jobs require a education. In todays world its hard enough just to find people to show up for work everyday. The problems are not dem. or rep. All you have to do is read the comments where people don't care what is happening to other humans. They only care about if they have more than them. I wouldn't care if AK lost everything as long as the employees that made them all the money were taken care of.I hope things work out before christmas. Think of the children and the parents. Good Luck and God Bless

Todays Poll dont forget to vote-Yesterday, 62% of you said Congress should NOT help the struggling auto industry with financial assistance. Has your opinion changed in the wake of the news of the layoffs at the local steel companies? Why would we help the Auto industry when more and more of their support plants like A/K and others are being closed or curtailed. The Federal Goverment needs to look at All the industries and stop the layoffs, How is Anyone going to afford to buy a new car when we are all on the street looking for work.Makes no sense to me.

I am the daughter of an AK employee, niece of an AK employee. I married an AK emlployee two months ago and my cousin for a company employed by AK all of these hard working men have families includding children. This layoff has had a serious effect on all four of them. Our family is a close amily that when times get hard we pull togeather to help each other out. Its going to be hard to do that this time since everyone seems to be in bad times. We are hoping that things will get better soon and they are able to open back up in January. I also hope that the this area is able to pull through this hard time. And to the ones making rude comments. My dad worked hard for 20 years as a truck driver being gone all the time and missing out on his childrens lives, being hired at AK was a blessing because he could finaly be able to tuck his kids into bed at night, but he still works very hard to make ends meet just because your an AK employee doesn't mean your filthy rich.

I am sick of people who think AK employees should have saved for a rainy day. Thats easier said than done. Before you speak take a look in the mirror are you so superior I wonder. AK employees work hard and long They deserve nice things. Jealousy serves no purpose. If you don't like it tough! These men and women are in for tough times just like anyone being laid off. Watch the news AK is not alone. As for the holidays we'll do what we can and enjoy being together. As for the union get your story straight. I know for a fact the union officers have been working hard for everyone. If you have questions go to the hall and ask quit listening to rumors. Ignorance is bliss!!As for Ak they have no controll over the economy. We will survive this....

To AK degas wife: Who did your husband work for? I don't think its AK. AK hasn't laid off anybody at the Ashland Works yet. Does he work for fesseco or vesuvius? To Heather: Your math leaves one major thing out: The 90,000 dollar figure is achieved by working alot more than 40 hrs. a week. It's more like 56 or even 64. Do the math then and you will see an average per hour rate of around $31.00. That is an average. You have to figure overtime is anything over 8 hrs. in one day and/or more than 40 hrs. per week.

to Heather--my husband makes 79900 gross income for the year and is not allowed overtime.. HOWEVER bring home is alot less. by sept. they had already taken out over 20,000 in taxes. And i know from exper. with Ironton Iron that the more overtime you work the more taxes get taken out..So the taxes AK workers are paying some way or another trickle down to pay your husbands salary in part. And for the comment about getting an ed. I honestly don't think you have taken a look at tuition prices or books lately

Posted by: chad on Nov 12, 2008 at 03:04 PM
to heather. i agree people these days do tend to live beyond their means. however in your caculation you are only considering straight time. These guys and gals much like where i work are putting in 20 and 30 hrs overtime a week if not more. so you cant calculate an hourly rate by your formula. most guys at ak make anywhere from $12/hr. to $23/hr with your most senior union members. also to the comment on if they werent union they might still have a job....if they were non union they would be working for about $7/hr. with no benefits. the union was voted in as a means of protection from unfare wages and benefits from greedy ceo's that wouldnt pay that if they didnt have to. i make $20/hr...not at ak steel... and make just enough to pay the bills....and i have nothing fancy... $50,000 home and truck thats 12 years old and a car thats 8 years old..a wife and a son. we live within our means and i have a good job till nov. 20 when i too get laid off and am barely making it.

TO THE AK WIFES: My prayers are with you and your families. I cant imagine the stress that you will endure in the weeks and months to come. To all of you beating up on them about worrying about Christmas, I believe these wives know that God will see them thru but the reality is that this will be a difficult thing to explain to their small children. Whether you like it or not, Christmas is a lot about gifts for toddlers and small children even if you try to instill the true meaning to them. They dont understand the concept of money and I would hate to think that anyone out there would want small children to be disappointed on Christmas morning. Again to the AK wives, I will not beat you down for legitimate concerns about and may God see you through. Let go and let God. From a WV wife and mom. God Bless!

Well I can tell ya one thing if the RR goes into idle we will all be fighting over a Nabisco nab. I to am very sorry for these families effected. Looks like some of that 700 billion could go to keeping places like this open or help DHL laying off everyone. How many foreclosures will this bring? Terrible days. If Obama wants to impress us he should make these jobs priority not wall street.

My husband has worked hard to get the job he has at AK and we consider it a blessing to have it. He and I BOTH are educated adults and work hard for what we have, and will continue to do so. To the people that have left such mean comments....how dare you! You don't know what it's like to work there, or to be married to someone that sometimes puts in 60 hours a week all while you work 40 hours a week yourself! As a matter of fact we have do have a very nice home, 2 new cars and vacation regulary BUT we both work very hard to have all of those things, and for your information we do not have credit card debit and we are not asking for a hand out! I look forward to have my husband home for the holidays, it will be a first since I have known him for us to wake up Christmas morning together. I am praying everyone and everything will be okay during this time. God dosen't give you anymore than you can handle and to all the families like us our there, we WILL make it through this!

I hate that the AK workers are going to be laid off. My prayers and thoughts go out to all of the families this will affect. I have an uncle and a brother in law that works at AK. They work hard for what they get paid. They have earned every dime that they have got. From working double shifts and overtime and holidays.I have seen my uncle come in from a 12 hour shift and sleep for a couple hours and go straight back to work. So for all of those rude and selfish people out there that are sterotyping the AK workers shame on you!!! Yes they may have earned a fairly nice living but so could you if you tried to.Everything that is happening in the world today is all fortold in the Bible, so we need to be careful and obey Gods commands.

For Heather: In a time when these poor working class people, like my brother, may possibly have to find a new job-maybe you should get out and get you some education starting with a nice healthy dose of reality. Regardless of how much he makes (which is way less than your uneducated guess of 37.00 an hour) he is still a human being with a wife and three children to support. So what? He deserves to be without a job because he is not as clueless and uneducated as you are on issues concerning the real world? I suppose he will possibly be needing a job sometime in the near future- you on the other hand need to get a life.

I have read and read all the comments....first off my husband was was laid off 2 weeks ago and was told in his department this was going to happen. But was going to just be a few week deal. They called him and wanted him to come back next week for one week, which we said no because there is no point in it and messing up the unemployment. He received his first unemployment check today and it was for 2 weeks what he makes in 1. My husband does not make no 37 an hour not even 20, we do not own out home we rent we do not have fancy cars we have a car that is paid for and is almost 10 years old. We do not dress in fancy clothes and neither do our children. We pay our regular bills put food on the table and get the kids to where ever they need to be. So ppl need to know the fact before they say things they have on here. This is going to hurt everyone in the area. AK does business with Mansback and CSX so how is it going to effect them.

I am just going off of what Chris said. Do the math. It's right there in plain sight. To the AK Wife that said their husband makes 90K a year... 90,000 divided by a 40 hour work week divided by 52 weeks is $43 an hour! Guess this just proves that some people do make $37 an hour! I know what house payments, car payments, and general bills are. My husband and I do have a house, a decent vehicle (2006 Dodge Durango), and utility bills. We also have a toddler and another on the way. It IS hard for us to save as well. Still, between us we make about $50-60,000 a year and do save a bit of money. Some should stop living beyond their means. I totally agree with the person that made the comments about frivolously (sp?) spending money. Here's another thing to look at, How many of the workers went to college? What kind of higher education did they get before taking a job at AK Steel? If they had a degree at least they would have that to fall back on...

Posted by: RELAX AK WIVES on Nov 12, 2008 at 12:13 PM
CALM DOWN! You will return to work in Jan. One day at a time. You are not in control of this situation. Now would be a good time to downsize. In an unstable economy there is no security. I bet 99% of the employees at AK live well above the standards they should be living taking their jobs for granted and the $90,000 income. If you are in debt, now is the time to get out of debt. If you are in extreme debt you may need to look for a good bankruptcy attorney. This is a wake up call for many! You will survive you just might not have all of those almighty luxurious items that you are used to having. I am speaking from experience.

I also want to know why you go on Toyota web page and they are hiring down in Georgetown, and they just open a new plant down in Indiana. I thought they were AK's #1 customer!!!! I just wonder if we will still have to pay union dues....

It's a sad fact of life,no one thinks it can or will happen to them,if they did it would mean planning ahead. Can we afford more kids, a huge mortgage, new car payment, savings for emergency and a lot of big toys?Dad always said"it's not how much you make, but how much you owe".Knock the union, the company or individuals and refuse to think maybe, just maybe, some of my future problems may be a little bit of my doing.

Maybe people need to get back to putting God first. In American today it seems people aren't satisfied with a modest home. They have to have 3 bathrooms instead of 2,4 bedrooms instead of 3and so on. Most people have their mind on make all you can. Work overtime and more overtime. Could be that God is trying to get Americas attention. WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO THEM WORRING ABOUT CHRISTMAS ITS JUST BECAUSE IT IS CLOSE. IM SURE IF YOU TAKE JUST A MOMENT YOU WOULD SEE THAT THERE IS MORE CONCERN THAN JUST CHRISTMAS.. IF YOU HEAT WITH GAS IT COSTS 368.00 JUST FOR 150 GALLONS. AND WITH THE COST OF EVERYTHING ELSE IT IS SOMETIMES HARD TO HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY LAYING AROUND. AND DONT SAY THEN HEAT WITH WOOD BC IF YOU DONT HAVE THE EQUIP. FOR THAT THEN THAT COSTS EVEN MORE.. PLEASE DONT JUDGE THEM AND SAY THAT THEY ARE JUST WORRIED ABOUT CHRISTMAS BECAUSE THAT IS NOT ALL THEY ARE WORRIED ABOUT

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 12, 2008 at 10:44 AM
To all of you who feel like shaming AK employees for their lavish spending: I don't know any mill employee that resides in a $200K plus home. Also, I believe that we all usually choose our homes and vehicles (My husband works at AK and ours are rather modest, thank you.)based on what we can afford. So, I don't think any of the accountants, etc are living as if they are convenient store clerks, just as doctors do not live as if they are steel workers. Just because we may have had a few more possessions (or the same) as you, doesn't mean that we haven't lived w/in our means, or that we always shop on credit and have to have new clothes when we go out. These postings ring so much jealousy it is almost obscene.

Anon: I'm sorry to say that we don't live in a 200,000-300,000 home, nor do many of my husband's fellow coworkers. I agree that people need to live within their means, but you cannot stereotype these workers as to be that way. We live a very middle class life, we would love to have nice things, but all we want to do is provide for our children. Our kids wear hand me down clothes, and we don't walk out of the house wearing new outfits. That is absurd! My Dad worked at AK for 44 years, and I grew up living a middle class life too. All everyone wants is to provide a comfortable life for their families. While I'm sure that many people may overextend theirselves with credit obligations, there are many of us out there who don't! Shame on you for thinking that these men and women who have lost their jobs only care about material things!

Posted by: To Heather on Nov 12, 2008 at 10:39 AM
Good for you that you feel that you can shame someone in a time like this. You can be proud that you know that you will not lose your accounting job and that your husband won't lose his x-ray tech job. It must be great to have such job security. As for saving for a time like this, I hope you can, because your time may come. I'm sure you'll be prepared though.

Yes people, times are pretty hard right now with all these layoffs. Yes I currently have a job but I have been through layoffs many times too. I dealt with it as if it was a blessing. Yes I worried about putting food on the table and presents under the tree but the time that I got to spend with my family was well worth it. Material things can be replaced but the gift of spending quality time with your family can't. People enjoy this time off with your families! May God Bless Each of You and Your Families!

Well i am going to say weather you are making 37 an hour or 10 an hour you live how you live like the person making 37 probably has a bigger house and car payment then the 10 an hour person. You get used to what you make so dont be jealous of these people for making good money. Everyone would like to make more money. My husband is a Millwright and works out of a union hall and yes sometimes it gets rough living off of unemployment. I however belive that buying gifts for your children for Christmas should be the least of your worries. I am a mother of a young kid so dont try to say that i dont understand. We do a lot of traveling now so we do not have to draw unemployment now, I am just here to tell everyone that there is a life outside of ashland and there are some really good jobs out there if you are willing. Just to tell everyone Ak dont want to go bankrupt and never have a job for these people that is cause for layoff.

I'm looking forward to having my husband home for the holidays!! You wives know about the 16 hour days your husbands have to work due to under staffing, so you should be happy for the break. Both AK Steel and the Steelworkers Union are never forthcoming and commonly mislead and undermine the workers, so what's the big deal now? You've dealt with the backstabbing lies from AK Management and the union dues that are unbelieveably high for a job that many consider equivilent to "winnig the lottery"?? Working at AK Steel is NOT what many of you think it is, so I look at this lay off as an opportunity for my husband and I to enjoy the holidays together without the phone ringing as soon as he gets home from work to come back. Besides, the "honey do" list of mine has been "IDLE" for way too long!

However, I have been thinking about a lady that I worked with that is going through a bigger struggle than I can even imagine. This lady has a little boy that has brain cancer and is really going through a tough time. When I see situations like this I feel blessed at what all God has given me. I have a beautiful healthy baby girl , a wonderful husband, wonderful family, and a awesome God. With all of the negativity around us right now it is hard to look at the positive side of things but just remember that things could be so much worse

You are not the only people this is happening to and we need to remember everyone in our country that is being affected with this same situation. To anon on Nov 12 at 1:00 am..not everyone lives it up..working at ak steel...we live in doublewide trailer...have regular vehicles..just like every one else...regardless of what people think..as for my family...we dont need material things to be happy..but having that AK check come in every week takes care of our living expenses and having clothes and food for 6 kids...before you go and make sterotypes for the AK Steel workers...maybe you should get the facts straight.. several of our friends and family members also live a modest life.. not every one is concerned with keeping up with the Jones's..

This country will learn the hard way to save. I admit, I don’t know much about the pay structure at AK Steel, but I would imagine most of the workers made much better than the per capita average for the area. Yet, how many have 6 months salary in savings? I would imagine much fewer than drive new cars, own boats, ATVs, and flat screen TVs. Layoffs are unfortunate, but unnecessary blame is always directed toward the company. The majority of the workers should instead be thanking AK for the work they had. Where else can a high school educated individual collect that much salary? By all rights, several AK workers should have been wearing paper hats in a drive-through window. It’s cold and unpleasant, but it is reality. Instead of spending like mad, most should have learned to save. Also, I beg the world to include more financial education in high school curriculum. We must understand the economy before it can be “fixed”.

I hate to see anyone lose their job, but one of the anon posters made a good point, even if it was mired in jealousy. I learned at an early age that the rug can come out from under you at any time when my father died suddenly during my childhood. People do need to tighten their belts and stop being so materialistic and save some money. That is VERY true. I'm still sorry for the workers though.I know folks making over 250,000 a year who can't manage their money as well. I think money management should be a required course in school.

For all you people saying the Union let you down, what did you expect? Did you want the Union lying to you? Nobody truly knew AK's intentions until yesterday afternoon. Direct your anger toward AK for not providing the answers, because i personally know that the questions were ask time and again by the Union. Everybody that works at the plant knew it was coming. They may not have wanted to believe it. So don't blame the Union. How many of the whiners on here have been to a Union meeting? We have one every second Monday of the month.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 12, 2008 at 08:38 AM
This is sad news. My grandfather worked at the plant and made a good living for his family. This was back in the 60's. He has since passed on.

Heather.....you an idiot. $37.00...I wish. My husband has worked there for 9 years. We thankfully didnt run out and buy a house or cars. We did buy one new car but that was because we have 4 kids now and needed something we all could fit in. People think these guys are just rolling in the dough. Oh how I wish that were true. Think before you speak people and thank goodness I am married to a man that if he would have to go to Taco Bell or Wal-mart to work, he would!!!

Posted by: george on Nov 12, 2008 at 08:12 AM
Heather - If you were truly an accountant you would have considered the fact that the corporate savings include additional manufacturing costs incurred to produce the finished goods. The savings is not entirely labor. However this is not the important issue. The issue is we all have many friends and family members employed by this facility and our thoughts and prayers should be with them now, not against them.

In these poor economic times, any lay off is a bad thing. Every person has different situations and no one should be put down because they were unable to save. My job is not in jepardy due to the nature of the business, but I am still not able to save. Recently, I had to pay extra in gasoline, and now that winter is coming the natural gas bill will go up. If I faced a lay off, I would not survive. My dad worked at AK for years and years, he retired in the 90s. This was always a concern. May all of you land on your feet and may the economy bounce back quickly.

I WORK IN THE HIGHEST PAYING POSITION AT ASHLAND WHICH IS JC5 AND EVEN WITH WEEKLY BONUS AND SUCH IS NO WHERE NEAR 37 HOUR. MAYBE YOU ARE THINKING OF TIME AND A HALF. I MADE OVER $100000LAST YEAR AND WILL MAKE THAT AGAIN THIS YEAR BEFORE BEING SHUT DOWN. IT IS VERY GOOD MONEY BUT YOU TAKE THE GOOD WITH THE BAD AND DO HAVE TO WORK OVERTIME TO MAKE THAT KIND OF MONEY. BESIDES IT IS THE BEST JOB IN THE AREA. MARATHON BUBBAS HAVE TO WORK 6 OR 7 12 HOURS SHIFTS TO MAKE THAT KINDA OF MONEY. WE WORK 1 OT A WEEK USUALLY AND BUST THAT. IT WILL BE HARD FOR EVERYONE TO ADJUST FOR AWHILE.AND THE UNION REALLY HAS NO SAY SO IN WHAT THE COMPANY WANTS TO DO WITH THEIR COMPANY. ALL THEY CAN LEGALLY DO IS GRIPE. THAT IS WHAT A UNION IS FOR. THE RIGHT TO COMPLAIN.

Posted by: B on Nov 12, 2008 at 07:19 AM
My husband is an employee of AK. He told me there was a clause in the contract stating AK must give them a 60 day notice of any layoff and that definately hasn't happened. He has been unofficially told his last day is the 19th. That is why the union president is trying to get them 2 months of full salary before unemployment kicks in. We also heard a rumor that Middletown was going to begin taking shipments from the coke plant so the blast furnace may never again run. He said another statement in the contract says AK can't run the mill in Middletown and not run the one in Ashland. Therefore, according to the contract Ashland will be running again but no one knows when. It will have a terrible impact on our family. I read in another comment that all AK people drive fancy cars and live in fancy houses. That's nonsense!! We do, however, all have families that we love. My heart goes out to all the other families of AK. We're hoping to see them up and running in a few months.

Posted by: Larry on Nov 12, 2008 at 07:17 AM
I know alot of people that worked at the mill. As a contractor I have had to work there. No one wanted to go in there, it was a very hard place to work. Those people earned every penny they made. Most people complaining about the high wages could not last a week in that mill..

Blame who you want, look in a walmart parking lot at the percentage of American cars. That is your answer. No one respects this country and its workers. Everyone is out for themselves. It is not a democrat/republican concept. It is an unraveling of American society. Everyone joined hands for a few months after 9/11. A month later the big news story is Brittany Spears. Americans need to take care of Americans. Shut our border, take care of family and friends.

On the $37.00 an hour your right..The lady in the Daily Independent Newspaper said her husband was going to get $500.00 a week sub pay and she said that he would be making a month what he was getting a week so $500.00 times 4 = $2,000.00 divide by 40 hours and you get $50.00 an hour. But look on bright side the Members Choice Credit Union should have some nice over priced toys to buy.

All these comments about how the AK steel workers should have been saving money for a rainy day..please! That's easier said than done with the price of everything going up! Yes, gas prices have come down some, finally, but only recently and it is anyone's guess how long that will last! Anyone with children knows how hard it is to save money for something that may or may not take place! I feel for the families of AK Steel employees and hate that you are going through this, especially this time of the year! My husband lost his job and has since worked for a few different companies in the construction field. With the economy in such terrible shape, potential jobs fall apart daily and work is lost. His work has been spiratic all year, and it is hard! Hang in there and know that you will be in the prayers of many!

Yes, there has been rumor that because of "production loss" that AK would be cutting back jobs, but the employees have NEVER been told if those rumors were true. The employees held several meetings with the union, and asked this question many times, yet they always got the same answer...."don't worry". No one ever gave these employees the answers they deserved. The one thing they also never did was stop taking out union dues. These people paid for a service that was not provided. It's such a slap in the face to live on hope and carrying that hope back to your family every day when the truth was always known from the people you learned to trust. Finding out the truth on the news to a question these employees have been asking for weeks is a discrace!!!! These people work hard. They work long hours, yet they haven't gotten the respect they deserve! It would be different had they been told the truth. AK hasn't known the truth for many years. It's ashame it was at others expense!

I live in the Ashland area and have had family members employed at AK. Some of the things that I have observed about a great many of the AK employees is that they are too busy keeping up apperances to have a savings account. All drivers in the household driving brand new cars, living in 200,000-300,000 thousand dollar homes, wearing a different outfit every time they leave the house and all the kids wearing top brands all the time. Many shopping trips using credit cards instead of cash. It is very sad to see this happen but hopefully this will be temporary and some of these people will learn to live within their means so that if this happens again they won't be in the same boat. A lot of people in the area would be feel like they hit the lottery and be more than happy with the amount these people will make with their unemployment.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 12, 2008 at 01:00 AM
Most importantly to all the employees and their families.....stay strong and keep your heads up! Unless you are an AK employee or family member, no one really knows how hard the "temporary idle" hits home. It's easy to post your comments about what YOU would do, but unless you are living the reality of this devestation, nothing that you say really matters. My husband also works at AK. He has always been a dedicated worker. Actually, he is much more than that. There was not a time that I can remember when I knew his shift would soon be over and I looked so forward to him coming home, yet I would get that phone call that he was picking up yet another shift. He was born to work. It was hard, but he loved it. He dedicated hiself to AK when they needed him. He sacraficed. When these employees needed AK, no one was there. The "union" didn't support the answers they had. I'm ashamed of AK. This will affect MANY businesses, and when it's you, will you then be so quick to judge??

We (and i am an ak wife) never had a promise of how long this job was goin to last. Be thankful for what you do have and keep everyone in your prayers for the holiday season. As you will be in mine. People just need to calm down. Things will work out someway or the other. And I am a wife to an employee, so I can say it! To AK Wife, you just need to shut up. You are not the only wife and your husband is not the only one. You are also not the only one with kids. You made your point now stop dwelling on it. No we don't have kids yet, but that don't make it any easier for us than you. Things happen for a reason and things will work out. You need to focus and support your family instead of running your mouth. Support your husband and help him out in this time. I know how my husband feels right now and I'm sure that yours feels the same. You should be thinking about him more and you less. He will get unemployment (which I know is not near what we are used to getting) but at least he does get something. Right now everyone is just going to have to learn to budget more. Hopefully they will start it back up soon and this wont last. Just support your family and deal with them and not others.

For everyone talking about welfare and so on, many employees throughout the mill are looking for a way to MAKE money and not draw unemployment, food stamps, etc. These men work for a living and are proud people. We are not the type of people who are looking for handouts. If we can get by on our own, that is what we want to do. Many comments have been made about the amount of money AK employees make (None make $37/hr, by the way). Did it ever occur to anyone that AK employees have indeed paid taxes, which goes toward funding such government assistance programs? If we get paid so much, then we have paid a large portion into these programs. Also, AK workers have funded the local economy with paychecks for many years now. Many non-AK workers wouldn't be able to make it in this area without our paychecks.

My husband has worked for AK almost 5 years & yes every person should save for a rainy day, but as everyone else knows the cost of living these days is very high & no amount of saving could prepare anyone for a layoff. This is our families second layoff in the last 6 years. A lot of workers are upset because on friday morning they had a meeting telling the employees that there would probably be a layoff & that this would happen on November 22. They also told these men that the expected start up date would be in 6 weeks & my mouth dropped open when the first news broadcast said layoffs with no set date for call backs. You can imagine the feeling everybody had. I have 3 small children at home and 7 1/2 months pregnant. I am thankful my husband has more than 3 years in because a lot of people aren't aware that those who have under 3 years lose their insurance pretty quick and do not receive any of the extras of those who have more than 3 years. Think of everybody in this time of need.

I know that nobody wants to pay for people to be on welfare if they don't have to. But you have to think that this is not something that the employees want. And I know that none of them plan or want to go on welfare. So people just need to chill and stop being such jerks about things. People making those comments most likely don't have anyone envolved in this so they just need to stay out of it.

AK WIFE - I believe I work with your husband and I agree with your last post. If these company officials would take a chunk of their bonus, they could fund our pay for the six week period. Another thing that has upset me is the fact that there are no plans to lay any salary employees off in the mill. As far as the company going through "tough times" any employee of AK can sit in front of you and name off numerous ignorant moves that AK Steel has made over the past 6 months alone that has cost the company millions of dollars. AK could have done something to "save for a rainy day" themselves for the, as Wainscott put it, "dedicated and hard-working employees" that keep the mill running. Anyone that has spent anytime inside the mill also knows that this "hot idle" that they will being doing with the blast furnace may not work. The furnace seems to be the all or nothing type and may not make it through the next 6 weeks. If we have another incident like last fall,AK may close for good

Prayers to the workers and their families. Hopefully this is just a temporary situation. To ObamaFan, I've lived my whole life union. My father was UAW, and my husband is IW769. I agree with the protection of benefits and wages by the union. However, instead of being a "party" man, maybe you should decide by individual issues. The thing that bothers me about your prior comment is that you come off degrading and insulting those that work in the fast food industry. Say what you want, but I bet you eat out and depend on the services that they provide you without even a thought or real thank you. In high school I worked at BK and I assure you that the job might not be rocket science, but it is WORK. If it meant feeding my family, I'd have no qualms about working at a fast food place again. Shame on you for the insult. You're the reason so many people find issue with union workers. Think before you speak.

Posted by: Heather on Nov 11, 2008 at 11:10 PM
Since my first comment wasn't posted To Chris~ So, let me clarify your comment a little better.. You said that AK Steel would save $5.8 million. Now, there are approx. 650 employees being laid off. 650 employees X 40 hours a week X 6 weeks equals 156,000 man hours. Now, take the $5.8 million and divide that by the 156,000 man hours which equals approximately $37 an hour!!! If you haven't been saving some of that for a situation such as this, SHAME ON YOU! My husband is an x-ray tech, I am an accountant. Together we don't make that an hour! I still feel for the kids of these families though. It's not their faults.

Anyone that thinks that you can work for a company like A K and not have a union to protect you has to be crazy.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 11, 2008 at 10:56 PM
AK employees are some of the hardest workers in this area. That work terrible shifts and lots of hours in hard conditions. Now with that said lets, talk about the other side I know for a fact how the works no sir we can't do that job even though were just standing here we have to wait three hours for someone from the electical union to put that light bulb in while we stand here waiting. And you know its true. That is the big problem with unions WASTE WASTE WASTE. Now AK employees also make great money especially for this area but that also isn't enough most have to budget their life on the overtime not their regular pay and then when something this terrible hits it really hits hard. I work in the industry so don't get on here and tell me its not true. With some it isn't but for most especially the younger it is. Good luck to all and God be with you in this hard time.

Several of you have noted that ak employees should have saved for a rainy day. Well, last quarter, the company have great profits (thank God!). But they didn't seem to save for the rainy day either. So, instead of saving some of those profits and making sure their employees are taken care of, they have laid off the employees that helped them achieve their success. Yes, part if this is shared with the employees, but I think many of us would rather have our (or our husbands) jobs assured. I do agree with all of you that have said to put your faith in God. This is proof that no one (or company) on earth deserves our faith, only God. It is sad for all the kids, but without all the gifts, maybe we will all remember why CHRISTmas is celebrated. We all just need to pray for one another and help each other out through this tough time.

Posted by: Mike on Nov 11, 2008 at 10:17 PM
Heard about this as soon as I got home from school, not even 10 minutes afterwards. My dad used to work for AK until they layed him off for some reason or another. He has another equally important job with URS now, but he was surprised to hear that AK was going to be "temporarily shut down." He was having a good laugh about everything they said on the news report though, because he knows what each individual part of the Blast Furnace is.

For AK Wife on Nov. 11, 2008 at 9:01 pm. I hear ya about the many times your husband was at the mill more than at home. I remember over the summer when I complained because I was always home alone with the kids and he was having to work so much overtime. I even quit my full time job back in May in order to go back to school full time because he was able to provide for us. Now I am going to have to scramble to find something quick. We have four children, and there is nothing else in this area as far as employment. I agree with what you said about the corporate bosses, it just isn't fair. My husband worked his rear off too...all we can do is pray that we will all get through this. God bless all of these hard working men, women, and their families.

Chris, you say that the company will save 5.8 million by laying everyone off for 6 weeks... So, let me get this straight. 650 (union workers) X 40 hours a week X 6 weeks is 156,000. 5.8 million divided by 156,000 is roughly $37 an hour! Seriously? My husband is an x-ray tech and I am an accountant and we don't make anywhere near that an hour put together!!!! If you haven't been saving for a rainy day, shame on you! I do feel sorry for the kids though. This is a sad time to have to scrimp to get Christmas under the tree.

To ak worker: AK execs. flew in today to tell us about the lay off, but they didn't even meet with the local union pres. The union met with local labor relations people while the execs meet with all salaried personal. They wouldn't answer any of the unions questions.

Look, get over it people ! Life goes on . It's not like they just all of the sudden did this . Just about every single AK employee can tell you that they knew this was coming a long time ago . We were warned .

What I'd like to know is where is the state in all of this. In 2004 they made an agreemant with the state to keep 900 jobs. The state gave them 65 MILLION and 40 MILLION in tax breaks those 900 jobs were supposed to be secure. I'm not a genius but I don't think that leaves 900 people working there.

FOR:Anonymous on Nov 11, 2008 at 07:48 PM "Get rid of the union and mabey you might work" We like our Union just fine. It provides us with great benefits and health insurance. It also insures us that we don't have to lick anyones boots or work for Morons like you. I assure you we didn't vote for the sawed off thing that lives on Pennsylvania Ave. Come on down to the union hall and see what real men look like! In the mean time go back to flipping your burgers.

My husband works at the mill. There were many times when he was there more than at home. I was always thankful that he had a good paying job though. What I don't get is why is it that corporate bosses get million dollars BONUSES each year. If one person would give that up they could pay the salary for these people and keep them there. If they want to idle the furnace fine and slow production they could make them do something. I know all of the lunchrooms are disgusting with rats and spiders let them clean them. These people get a kick out of seeing people hurt financially. If they didn't they would gladly give up that bonus and keep the workers that make them their money working. Trust me these big wigs do nothing more than pick up a pen and there wrist with their big rolex watch. My husband worked his rear off for that place and look where it got him.

Dems have only been in control for 2 yr of congress. Republicans controlled cong and senate 12 yrs before that. SO I suggest you all do a little more research than fox news and rush. Bush is 0% for any union policy and so are most of your Republican sen. and congressman. So yes...the Bush economoy IS TO BLAME for this and the rest of the economic mess. Your president is the most unpopular president ever and I don't believe it is because of his looks.

Posted by: local 1865 on Nov 11, 2008 at 08:34 PM
To all the idiots blaming Bush, don't be so stupid. Who has controlled Congress the last two years? Everybody always has to make things political. For those who think the timing of the layoffs is coincidental, you do not realize the type of company AK truly is. AK is violating federal law, a promise to the state, and breaking the contract with the local union. They don't want us working Thanksgiving week because of the holiday pay we would receive. To Vil: Not all union folk are Democrats and narrow minded.

It is not an easy thing to trust in God, but yes it can feed your family, pay your bills and provide peace. I am speaking from experience, my husband has cancer and cannot work there for no unemployment and a loss of over half our income. Not one time did I miss a house payment or any other payment and we had food to eat. I didn't wear new clothing and I didn't eat steak but when I though I wouldn't have the money for the next month God provided. One day I was outside working and worrying about how I was going to buy food for the week and a lady pulled into my drive and handed me $50 and said you was thinking of us. She didn't know I needed the money but God did and I believe he provided through her. I could share many other stories of how he provided. Without faith you have nothing.

TO ANOTHER AK WIFE--I hear you loud and clear. I have been in your situation recently my fellow American. My husband lost his job completely a few years ago. I lost my home, my credit, my automobiles, filed bankruptcy felt completely helpless and reduced to a more simple lifestyle.I have learned the hard way and I am not just another person trying to voice my opinion about something I know nothing about. I am telling you that it will be o.k. You will make it through this rough time. You R not alone. There are programs to help your family and your special needs child. My heart goes out to you and all of the AK employees. These are extremely challenging times. You asked if I had a job and yes I do but now my husband works for a much smaller wage than what he used to and it's been a harsh reality! Words cannot describe the frustration, anger and devastation that my family felt. This country is in a major crisis. Your husband has a good chance of going back to work, it's temporary.

We have bill just like everyone else. God has always taken care of us in the past and I believe he will continue to do so in the future. Believe me we want our child to have Christmas just like every other child, but we also want him to know that God gave us the greatest gift of all his Son. So yes we do live in the real world and I'm happy to so we know what our REAL GOD can do!!!

I see a lot of people hear blaming Republicans for the downturn in the economy, but truth is Democrats have been in control of Congress for past two years. Truth is any congressman whos been in office for the better part of 20 - 30 years are "all" to blame for the shape were in today. They have all republican & democrat stood by and took care of big money, PAC's, and Lobbyist and let the taxpayer foot the bill. It's time the country was once again run by the people for the people and that won't happen until term limits are imposed upon congressman. One thing for sure this country can not sustain the untold millions, billions of military dollars that we are spending in the middle east. Time to bring troops home and concentrate on our domestic economy.

The Pregis Plant in Wurtland (it used to be Pactiv) laid off about 15 employees just this past week. Said it is due to the economy. I know its not near the amount that AK laid off but the worries are the same. Being able to buy Christmas is the least of my worries. Keeping food on the table and the electric on is at the top of my list. Just like the post from Degas wife, assistance just aint available. Been working all this time to make sure the government has money to hand out to all the lazy deadbeats that don't have a clue what it is like to earn your keep. There aint nothing left to help out the working families.

My heart goes out to everybody at AK especially everybody at Amanda Furnace. I worked in the Maintenance Department at the furnace for three years before I left in 2003. I miss everybody there but I am glad that I don't work there anymore. For those of you who don't know they won't be able to keep the furnace hot for long. I assume that they are keeping wind on the furncace to keep the burden hot along with the stoves. Due to the internal condition of the furnace, if it goes cold they won't restart it. That would probably require do almost a complete rebuild of the hearth and the bosh (lower part of the furncace). AK won't spend that kinda of money on equipment that was built in 1963. Even though it is painfull I don't blame AK. The steel that they make in ashland is mostly for the Automobile industry. I hope everything turns out ok.

in response to Anonymous on Nov 11, 2008 at 04:52 PM......saving for a rainy day!!!!! Try doing that when you have 3 kids have to drive 30 mins to get to your job, then for them to tell u we only need you to work 4 hours that day, then when you are scheduled a 48 hour week they cut you down to a 24-32 hour week. You can not save when it takes everything you make to put food on your table, clothes on you childrens backs, house paymnet, car payment, insurance, electric, gas, water, and phone because you have to have a phone or they get mad at you because they can not call you when they need you. We went through our savings the last layoff. This layoff is going to effect more than AK it is also going to effect many truck drivers and employees at mansback. Over 1000 people when it is all said and done will be out of work, so tell me how we ar ALL going to make it becuase guess what Ashland Oil all over again if AK does nbot come back up

I know from personal exp. how hard times are now and trusting in god may help ease your mind, but like stated earlier it wont pay the bills.. and for the wifes to start looking for jobs. WHERE? I know I have put in app. it seems every where and no one has called back for an interv. My dad also just got news from the construction company he is a sup for and he is getting laid off this month he has been with them for 10 years and my mom works. But it might not cover all the bills. This is hard times but to say just trust in God, or for the wifes to get a job, that is insensitive even if you have or have not been in this position.Because alot of familys can not get help for food or heat because of incom they had prev.and this stuff is not material its necessity. My heart goes out to those whose job is on the line

Probably not. Just like Carl said..it's corporation greed over workers livelihood..and it's true...AK is making profits right now..just look at the profit sharing check they will pass out this week...Unless you have some type of insight with the plant..how can you say they dont have a choice? Reality check here - I bet like me _ YOU are a communist . . .Shop Walmart? I do. 80% of everything in Walmart is an import. Have a credit card bill - I don't and honestly hope you don't either. The Bush administration is responsible for adding more to the debt in 8 years than ALL other presidents before. Ouch! Its time to pay . . . time for a MAJOR slow down in our economy. $800 billion bail -out supported by Dems and Reps will cost us ALL for decades to come. Lets be responsible. Neo - republicans are responsible along with liberal spending democrats - they are EXACTLY the same - they spend LOTS. Difference is - with Democrats you pay now. republicans put it on the bill and we pay for decades.

Yes, this is very bad timing and and has a great deal to do with the economy. However, I find it disgusting that part of my husband's pay check goes to union dues. I would not be bothered by this if the union did their job. Nonetheless, at a meeting several wks ago, the union members were told not to listen to or worry about the rumors, that there would only be a lay off if the whole company went under and closed its doors for good (makes you wonder). Then, the union president told my husband to his face that they knew nothing of a lay off. Then, today, my husband said that he had just gotten off the phone with the Union hall and they still knew no exact time frame or information. At that very moment, I was watching as WSAZ flashed the news at the bottom of the screen. Yes, our family was alerted via media, not from the union. Where are all those union dues going? In these time, you expect the company to do this to their employees, but the union should be helping its members!

You should be ashamed of yourself talking to us like everything will be ok. Maybe you have faith, but some of us live in the real world and know that God does not pay the bills. Are peopele in this community really that ignorant? Do you honestly think that AK likes not having sales/revenue (I do not mean profits, different concept), laying off their hardworking labor force in multiple locations, and to top it all at the holidays??? It really is a no brainer, the auto industry is down because they haven't stayed competitive with foreign imports, therefore AK's sales are down. This is the story across the country in multiple industries. But, would you rather the company burn through their immediate cash and go bankrupt, leaving there no jobs EVER for the people of this community? It is not the company's fault that people, making good money, did not save for the unforeseable. Plus, no one can say this was a surprise, look at the economy and the community rumors of the last few months! Yes, it is a truely sad situation especially at the holidays, but everyone should still have hope. Isn't that part of what the holidays are about? God Bless and good luck!

One of those men is my son-in-law. A hard worker that work when he was sick and wasn't able to and this is what he and 650 workers get. Also there when the company needed him overtime or what ever. I've been in their shoes I know. In May of 1982 I was working at C&O railroad and they came in and said where closing the doors for a short time. My husband was out work all so at the same time. I had two children like my daughter has now. I thought what in the world are we're going to do. I'm telling you men and women and their family at AK the same thing I told my daughter, God will take care of you(your needs not your want's)just remember that. Twenty- six years later I didn't lose nothing ,my home, my family, some times it was rough but we made it. It make a person a stronger. You all will be in my prayers. Hope the CEO of this company will look and see these men and woman are hurting. What could they done to prevent this? Do they really care? What will happen to the Middlletown plant

Well last year this time we were on a layoff for a month. Now they are telling us the earliest for start up is 8 weeks and we find out through the news there is no start back day. Unemployment in Kentucky is no where near 80% more like 45% of what we make. There is a cap on unemployment in this state and it is a big cut. Hope Santa remembers all the people in this area this year..because we can not get any assistance because even with the layoff we still have to go by the last 3 months you worked which knocks you out of everything. So in 3 months our family can get some help because unemployment is not going to pay the bills, car payments, and mortgage and put food on the table.

And this poverty is why almost everybody in the state is addicted to pills. Thank God that Obama has a plan to invest in American industry. Its ok though us democrats will bail out the ignorant rednecks again. How bout a history lesson. Reaganomics= could not buy a job Bush#1= high gas prices and high unemployment Bush#2 do we really need to say it again. Laying off employees, no matter what time of year is always a bad thing. However, what is a company to do that does not have billions of cash dollars to burn through like the automakers that their business depends on. I feel terrible for the employees, but do they not remember to save for a rainy day, a rainy day that has come with the economic hardtimes of our day! This is no suprise with how the is economy right now. There is a silver lining in this dark cloud though that hopefully people will remember. This is a temporary and not a bankruptcy shut-down. If the second, then there would be NO jobs to EVER come back to! Hopefully, this will not last too long and everyone will be able to thrive again soon. My thoughts and prayers for all.

I don't think it was the company thoughts to lay people off at Christmas time it is the economic climate that were unfortunely in. With the company not receiving orders for product in over two months they can not continue to operate and have to go idle. Please stay positive during these tough times, say prayers for the family members of the workers at AK Steel and the country. We are going through times that this country hasn't seen in a long time. I believe that the union workers will continue to receive pay and benefits through this year.

Its such a sad thing to see this happening at such a bad time as now. At least Members Choice Credit Union, many of the worker's financial institution is helping by giving loan deferrments and interest-only payments to those individuals who have sadly lost their job. I wish all those hard workers luck in the coming months.

WONDER WHAT THE COUNTRY THINKS OF BUSH NOW. DO THEY EXPECT OUR NEW PRESIDENT ELECT TO FIX IT ALL. THIS IS JUST SHOWING WHAT THIS COUNTRY IS GOING TO. WE CAN SPEND BILLIONS FIGHTING IN IRAQ BUT WE CAN'T EVEN KEEP OUR COUNTRY FROM GOING UNDER. THIS REMINDS ME OF IRONTON, OHIO, IT IS NOTHING BUT A GHOST TOWN. OUR GOVERNMENT CAN BAIL OUT AIG FOR TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS, BUT WHERE IS THE RELIEF FOR THE CAR COMPANIES, GM, ETC. THIS IS ABSURD. OUR SON'S WORK FOR THIS COMPANY AND I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT HAS WENT ON IN THIS COMPANY FOR SO MANY YEARS. I HAVE 13 GRANDCHILDREN THAT THIS WILL AFFECT IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. WAY TO GO---------BUSH.

This is such a sad sign of the times. Our children don't understand why our economy is in such bad shape, and now we have to explain to them why their Daddy doesn't have a job and we won't be able to have a Christmas? All we can do is pray, and hope that we can all get through this. This will not only devastate those employed by AK, but all of the surrounding merchants and businesses in this area. Thanks a lot AK!

My husband works at the coke plant and some of the men in my family work at the mill as do my friends. As of today, my husband still has a job but who knows for how long. Everyone in this community knows someone who works there...It's a shame that this had to happen now at Christmas time. The worry has just doubled in my family. God be with us all and give us strength.

Just letting you know that I think the picture of AK Steel is wrong. Isn't that the Air Gas Plant in the picture?

Bad time for a shut down,Christmas is around the corner and high heating bill, but it make you wonder if they want bail out money like AIG,watch and see if their big shots have a big party like AIG.

This country is falling apart. What will we do.

This is really nice...A company that is supposed to really care about their employees and their families..to lay them off right around Christmas..I have 6 small children..how do we explain this to them? My dad also works for AK..as a child I remember going to the union hall..because he was layed off and getting a Barbie after sitting on Santa's lap..why do they always do this around Christmas time??....what a way to repay these men and women who work over time and who are taken away from their families...What's next??? The food stamp line....

This is a sign of the times. It's always sad to see this happening to factories and plants. I'm always reminded of Flynt, MI where all the industry has shut down and left that city in peril for decades. The timing of this is also unfortunate with the holidays coming up and families already tightening the belt with the economy. My thoughts and prayers are with these folks. Hopefully the plant will not be shut down for too long.

This is real bad it close to the Holidays and people being layed off and not sure when or if they will get back on there....I pray the workers can find other jobs some where
