HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's no surprise that obesity is a problem in our region - but just how bad has it gotten? A newspaper article coming out soon paints a bleak picture.

In fact, it claims one city in our region is the fattest and unhealthiest in all of America.

The title says it all. A newspaper article that claims Huntington is America’s fattest and unhealthiest city. It's set to run Monday in newspapers from coast to coast.

“I think there's substantial bias there with, as I said before, some pre-conceived conclusions,” said Dr. Charles McKown, Dean of Marshall’s Medical School.

The article is by an Associated Press medical writer, who spent several days in Huntington. He cites data from the CDC that says nearly half of the people in the Huntington area are obese, the highest rate in the country.

"It's disturbing because we really are trying to position ourselves in a much better light,” said Brandi Jacobs-Jones, deputy mayor of Huntington.

The problem the CDC says is that its data should not be used to compare different cities, because there are too many variables -- Making the article from the title down questionable at best.

“I think there are health problems every place, but to depict us as an unhealthy community as he has is rather absurd,” McKown said.

Another problem in the article: the writer says Huntington’s phone book lists 200 pizza joints, more than all the gyms in the state. WSAZ investigated and could only find 38.

The writer also says that while he was in Huntington he hardly ever saw a runner or bicyclist.

Thursday evening, though, WSAZ found people packing into Ritter Park, taking advantage of the autumn weather. Some, like Brenda Yeager, were exercising to turn arond those statistics. Yeager suffers from diabetes and exercises everyday.

"You would think that no one exercises reading that, and obviously they've never been to the Y at 7 am or 6 am and you can't get on a piece of cardio equipment,” Jacobs-Jones said.

The bottom line for Dr. McKown is that Huntington is not the unhealthiest city in America.

“I think we're healthier today than we were even a decade ago,” he said.

And he says now the state is moving in the right direction!

There are parts of this article that some consider very demeaning to the area.

The writer, Mike Stobee, says people in the hilly coal fields to the south live in houses or trailers with drooping, battered roofs. He also says they stare hard at strangers in new cars.

Stobee says half of the elderly here have lost all their teeth -- feeding into typical stereotypes of Appalachia.

WSAZ talked to Mr. Stobee, He said he stands by the story and would not comment to us.

Everyone agrees: obesity is a problem here. The question is just how bad.

We should point out: the data refers to "Huntington" as the metropolitan area of Cabell, Wayne, Boyd, Greenup and Lawrence counties.

Obesity is a problem all across the united states. If somone wants to be fat let tham be fat, if they want to they can go work out its their own personal decision however unhealthy. America will have a real problem when all the liberals start stripping our rights away. If everyone wasnt so concerned with what everyone else was doing and took care of themselves im sure they would find a few skelitons of thier own to take care of.

To Sue why don't you post your address so the ems and firefighters will not come to help you when you call. My boyfriend is a volunteer firefighter and he is chunky and he puts his life on the lne everyday to save errogent, unrespectful, no good people like you. So when you need help don't call the ems or the fire department.

i am beautiful even if i am doing weight watchers to get healthy. i just want to let othe bbw's know that they are beautiful too and there are plenty of men who like it that way. its sad that people have to hurt others with insults. they think they are helping and they are not. if you don't want to look at a heavy person then don't, just walk away. what if Jesus was very heavy???????

I guess walking is cool and all, but some of you really need to try some aerobics and sit-ups. Try eating a salad instead of Jolly Pirate, Pizza Hut, and Golden Corral.

I am from this area, and we may not be perfect, but compared to where I am now other places I have traveled, we are still almost heaven. Simply because we still stand for what we believe in and remember the golden rule. It seems many in other places have forgotten how to be kind to their neighbor. Especially the gentleman who wrote this offensive article. OK, I read the comments. You people down on WV, pack up and go, that's just more gravey for us. The rest of you have made me laugh so hard, my tummy hurts. I love you!

obesity is a problem throughout america not just here! why do west virginians always get represented in a bad light? why is obesity connected with some kind of personality flaw or being undereducated? stereotypes. here's an idea, worry about your own weight. not your neighbor's.

Does it really matter? Is America really that shallow? It's what's on the inside that counts....

Posted by: RK on Nov 17, 2008 at 04:27 PM
The person who wrote this article just added to the already too numerous stereotypes that harass those of us who live in West Virginia when we leave the state. This person was so blinded by most of the nation’s assumption that West Virginia is full of toothless hillbillies who do not know how to take care of themselves that he could have never realized that most of the people in this area DO take care of themselves. We are intelligent people who realize the benefit of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Negative press like this, as well as idiotic comments left by some of the people that live here are what give those of us that want the rest of the US to see West Virginia in a positive light a bad reputation.

Maybe the city should shut down some of the food joints, and they should open more gyms.

ok the so called doctor that wrote this is stupid. there is 36 pizza places in huntington. if you go to yellowpages.com which is where he got his number then you will find that he can't read because it brings up 192 pizza places for 29 different cities you have to click on huntington then it will bring up the ones in huntitngton. so if the guy that wrote this for the paper can't even read or pay attention to what he is reading. hes not even qualified to write an article say that this is the fatest town in the usa. so i suggest that he learn what he is actually doing. and people that are fat it is there choice because i eat what ever i want and i always eat out and i am 160lbs and 6ft tall so its their choice to be fat cause i also don't exercise that often. so thanks justin

This area has always amazed me. I am 40 years old and see people I graduated with look like they are 60 years old and have false teeth or no teeth at all. Physical appearance is not what this area is known for!

I don't know about the fattest, I've been to some places down south where there are a lot of fat folks. As far as the unhealthiest, I don't know about that either. I'm from Louisville and have many family and friends there, and I will tell you it seems quite a few people there are very ill.

Ok it is time for the madness to stop the health dept needs to step in as they did with smoking and ban being obese close the fast food joints just like banning smoking in bars.It is only right it is time for everybody to get healthy,so I as a tax payer demand a healthy location to live in and it is the health dept duty to make this happen just as the second hand smoke claim that stripped smoking in public places from smokers they need to hit the obese now once this article is seen by insurance companies i will have to pay higher primeums and that aint right because i do my part and it is only fair the rest of you do yours,so come on health dept it is time to get on to a new mission and fat should be that mission shut the fast food joints for the better of the area and if these obese people are on welfare make them work for their grub stubs they need excerise.Besides that i am tired of seeing all these over weight people just like i was tired of being around the smokers so enough is enh

okay to you the person who wrote Excuses: have you ever had thyroid disease, diabetes. anything. if you have or know someone with thyroid, you know it is sometimes are for someone who has a dead thyroid to loose weight because their energy is gone, diet doesn't help. I am on a diet constantly and have not seen any results. I have cut things out etc. My aunt has had thyroid longer than I have and she is a advid walker, still barely any weight loss. you people have no sense of respect for others. This goes back to God, he says not to judge and hear you guys are judging others. how rude? and what if it was you who was fat. why would u say u wouldnt want a fat ems working on you. you obviously don't know what they have to go through to be a firefighter etc. ask one of our huntington fire fighters. they will be glad to tell you. I have two relatives who are fire fighters, excerise, running, lifting...God help your soul!!!!

Posted by: Lois on Nov 17, 2008 at 12:48 PM
One little noticed line: 'the results were statistically insignificant for several cities...' Why did the AP choose Huntington, then? The AP often writes "news" stories with anecdotal evidence, enhanced or based upon one writer's views and interviews with one or two people. We have problems here and have to accept our responsibility, but there IS media bias against this area. The AP has ridiculed us all year, ever since we voted Hillary. Bias is hurtful to citizens here, and the media shaming is despicable .

Well if my payckeck didn't go to all the welfkins around and they had to work for their dinner they might lose a little weight.

Posted by: katy on Nov 17, 2008 at 12:43 PM
okay, they can say we are over weight, so some are. But i was watching a tv show last nite on TLC and in this one state over 75% of the people who lived there were either morbly or super obese. Now tell me how can we be the #1 state that is fat!! come on now. This guy who researched didn't research very good. Because whether you go to Ashland Park or Huntington you see people walking all the time. I am over weight and I am happy. I eat descent and walk when I can. But you know the fact is: some of us can not walk good because of sports injuries. I have a torn cartilage and muscle in my left knee and sometimes it kills me to walk period.

Sad to say but most of what was written about TRI State Obesity is true not all but most! Most people around here Just DO NOT WANT TO CHANG anything, including lifestyle!

Posted by: WVMom on Nov 17, 2008 at 11:19 AM
I live here in Huntington and I see it everyday. The majority of people living here are overweight, some severely, and it is out of control. Adults and children both, and it is sad. People can get as angry as they want about this article, but that is only because it points out the truth. The majority of people that I see here don't seem to have any cares about their health or the health of their children. Go to a local grocery store and see all the junk that people are buying for themselves and their families. I'm glad this article is out, because it shines a light on the fact that people here need to get off their butts and take care of themselves and their children.

I would like to know why some are being cheated out of the fame, us being at least 2nd place. Down here at New Town, WV alas, commonly know as Yephank. We have some of the fatest, nasty and craftiest people in the country here! Birth place of the famous WV Senator and home of an important committieman. Catman due and the Capon originated here! Lets see some justice with this thing!

I was born in Huntington and thank god I got out of WV at age 18. It's so sad but true, my mother recently passed away and I had to retrun to Huntington as she was in St.Mary's, I was shocked at how HUGE 98% of the nursing stuff were and when I would leave there would be a bunch of nurses chain smoking outside the hospital. So sad but it's the truth about about Huntington. I have all my own teeth and I'm 5'7" 137lbs. I hike in the hills around San Diego or walk almost every evening down at the beach with my Husband. Out here it's like a totally diffrent world and I love it!

Posted by: Amen on Nov 17, 2008 at 10:34 AM
Amen to that Sue! I agree 100% with your "meanest and dirtiest people in the world" comment. Don't forget jealous and spiteful! These people say they would give the shirt off their back to you but they convienently leave out the fact that they would be the first to stick a knife in it at a drop of a hat. There is no negotiating with people from WV. It is either their way or else. No middle ground thus the comment about having a glass of wine being sacrilegious while somehow stuffing you mouth with pizza and hamburgers until you're about to explode is just fine, resonates so much with me! What a bunch of ignorant hypocrites.

Darla - Michael wasn't comparing apples to oranges. After getting caught on this one, the AP changed its original story, which said "the Huntington phone book." See the original at http://www.wusa9.com/printfullstory.aspx?storyid=78264

I would have to agree 100% with this article. They are facts. I don't know how many of you have ever taken a stroll through Walmart. It's flat out embarrassing. Get off your butts Huntington (and surrounding areas). Do something!!! Don't bring further shame to the area by trying to make a point with your illiteracy problem. Why are you targeted by America, this is why.

Just saw this on CNN AGAIN..Sean Callebs and Joe Johns must be so PROUD of us back here lol For one thing there's no place to exercise here that you don't have to pay for & we can't walk anywhere anymore in Huntington unless we dodge bullets & be witnesses to drug deals everywhere. Can't walk anywhere without being accosted by bums and druggies & God knows what else! So other than running from gangstas and dodging bullets from the drug thugs, what exercise CAN we get in this place?

Posted by: WOW! you really are Dr. Senile..Reference" Why would he pick us..." on Nov 17, 2008 at 09:23 AM
Drsenile, I was meaning if he was in downtown Huntington, observing the people that LIVES in this area. He needed to do it when he could observe actual Huntington residence.Go back and read my comment again, the only point I was trying to make is ALL the U.S have this problem, not just us. How many people will disagree we DO have a lot of out of state people in our area when school is in. I do not want my community to be judged, when he could have asked "Are you an actual resident of this area?" It is so funny how people can take something out of the truth {We do have a bunch of out of state kids here.} and say I am blaming Marshall. That is a hoot. I included the entire U.S.A. I did not say "Marshall is fat".Let me explain this in a way you will better understand.I am saying, I would not want my home's apperance to be judged on "John Doe's" house painting job a block away from me. Only because they THINK he lives with me. Huntington has no more issues than any other town in America.

Posted by: Anon. on Nov 17, 2008 at 08:54 AM
It is very hard to eat healthy on a hot dog, macaroni & cheese budget. Unfortunately, unless you are on welfare, that is a major problem here and probably other places.

Posted by: Interesting on Nov 17, 2008 at 08:35 AM
I have lived her for many years. However, when I first came here, My first thought was how many people didn't care about their appearance. It was a true eye opener to go to Walmart or Kmart and see all the people who didn't brush their teeth, or to smell the BO from people who haven't taken showers in "I don't know how long". This was an observation form an out of towner. The observation is still true. The worst part about it is that the kids are just perpetuating it. I spoke with a parent who just couldn't understand why her daughter was so morbidly overweight. Hmmm. Her daughter drank 2 Pepsis in that 10 minute conversation and had 2 twinkies. You can tell about an area's wealth by how many pawn shops, rent-to-owns, and sleazy car dealerships there are. (Before you scream at me for this... studies have been done on this fact.) Wealth also relates to weight. Wealthier people eat healthier. People here just don't care.

WOW~This is all over the news. Front page on yahoo. Starting with the Mayor.. As a portly woman plodded ahead of him on the sidewalk, the obese mayor of America's fattest and unhealthiest city explained why health is not a big local issue. "It doesn't come up," said David Felinton, 5-foot-9 and 233 pounds, as he walked toward City Hall one recent morning. "We've got a lot of economic challenges here in Huntington. That's usually the focus

Darla are you STUPID.. You just said that WSAZ was not right in their count of Pizza places... They were ONLY refering to Huntington, not the entire EFFING Tri-state. If you count them all, you would have to go look for Obesse people in Ashland, Wayne,Barbourville, and Culloden, and give a statistic for all the Tri-state. I am from Huntington and I sure as heck would not order a pizza in Culloden. Your comment just repeats what WSAZ said in wording you could not grasp, everyone else "Got it". WSAZ MEANT, THERE ARE 38 PIZZA PLACES IN HUNTINGTON. Get the heck outta here Darla... I bet you were going through the phone book to order one yourself. Don't mess with my WSAZ.. Michael Wooten YOU ROCK! YOU KNOW WHAT HE MEANT IDIOT!! Sarah I will have to agree. It's a really sad fact that our area has come to where it is. Then most will make it worse by denying or trying to justify the facts. They will through you out of church if you drink a glass of wine. At the same time half of them there can't fit in a pew and the preacher can't even put his own shoes on. I thought gultiony and drunkeness was in the same sentence in the bible. I don't think if you have a glass of wine with dinner makes you a drunk but if you're impaired with fat what's that. Huntington harbors some of the meanest and dirtiest people in the world and I won't be back!

WSAZ, you said you could only find 38 pizza places in Huntington using the phone book but the AP writer searched yellowpages.com and found almost 200 places (as did I) under the pizza category in the entire area (including KY, OH). Don't compare apples to oranges.

Posted by: drsenile on Nov 16, 2008 at 07:50 PM
So it's really the out-of-state students attending Marshall that give Huntington is't "fat" name according to a prior comment. May I invite you to come work where I do...all Tri-state (yes, there's some from Ohio and Kentucky)...we could stock the entire offensive and defensive lines of all NFL teams with the bulk there.

Posted by: Anastasia on Nov 16, 2008 at 07:50 PM
If you go to yellowpages.com, type in pizza and Huntington WV, it will give you 192 results in the area (not just Huntington). The fact was not just made up but based on a search.

Ive been around quite a bit and have always had the theory that Huntington is the center of the fat universe, the farther you get away you can tell easily.Lexington is much fitter, Louisville is fitter tan Lexington and if you venture all the way to California it is hard to find a fat person or a buffet, so if we could just contain all the fat people to Huntington maybe we could end the trickle down effect to the rest of the world!

This article doesn't surprise me at all. As someone who has lived in other parts of the country, this is the worst city I have ever lived in and I can't wait to get out of here. Between the drugs, rundown homes, trash on the streets, and an overwhelming amount of people who seem to care nothing about their health or appearance, this city totally lives up to the WV sterotype.

Question…what criteria did Mr. Stobee use to select Huntington as the city to “observe” in order to write his article? Did a health professional issue an invitation to visit the area? Did he use a map as a dartboard? Did he just need a controversial issue? Apparently, he stayed in his hotel room and waited on room service; otherwise he would have noticed our beautiful park busy with walkers, lovely homes, Pullman Square, and the mighty Ohio River. It is a tragedy he left his “blinders” on and missed seeing our wonderful city.

Posted by: CW on Nov 16, 2008 at 02:08 PM
why is it that the rest of the country has to pick our area apart and make us out to be fat, ignorant hillbillies who dont know how to take care of ourselves?? this may not be the most ritzy part of the country but we have the biggest hearts. so to this big city writer who slammed Huntington, do your homework before passing judgement.

Posted by: Why would he pick us out of all the cities in the US??? on Nov 16, 2008 at 12:44 PM
If you think for one second he is talking about Huntington only, he forgot the "Out of staters".Look around Huntington, it is Marshall's Campus. That was an inaccurate judgment on his part. What he was looking at,{running the streets of Huntington} was a bunch of out of state kids. You can not label a city, when a lot of people residing in that paticular location, only have temporary address. Tell him to come back in the summer months, when school is out and he will get more accurate paper to hand to the press. I do realize obesity is unhealthy for the mind and body.It is sad that people only feel comfort through food.It effects EVERY state, city, town and street in ALL America. As far as him lying about the Pizza places in the city,I don't understand that.He is about to take this story national? We can prove him wrong on that one,and he may just be the one looking like the idiot. Also to the one that said, they might say next that obesity effects ones thinking. It can cause depresion.

Huntington is number 1...rah, rah for our team!!! Naturally, city leaders wish to debunk the report claiming "bias" et al. I've been in many other states the past few years and obesity is a national problem. Despite efforts of health officals and others, that condition has not changed. I suspect it's more of a problem of most people not caring. But then again, so few really give a darn about anything other than their own pleasures.

I've got an answer to your problems, better than surgery and lot cheaper too. Get a 20$ set of handcuffs and give the key to someone that will take them off just before you go work and put em back on when you get home. This is about the same way the surgery works, by using physical restraint. Hay, it would be better than dieing and wouldn't leave all the scaring.

Let this be a lesson to the news media. I see so much biased and hyped reporting that I seldom watch television news or read newspapers. It's not worth the trouble to try to sort out the truth. Mike Stobee is not interested in reporting the news he is interested in becoming the news. "What goes around comes around".

Overweight worker, it is not your insurance's responsibility to fork over tens of thousands of dollars for a procedure that is considered by most to be the comsmetic solution to people with fat asses. A bit of advice, stop with the "diet" and start with living healther, period! That means a life style change for "life". Put down the slice of pizza and start eating right. No preservatives, no fats, cut out the sodas and the late night candy bars and go out and walk/run yourself back into shape. When it comes right down to it, there really is not excuse but pure lazyness!

When I was in elementary school, We got out and played softball, dodgeball, skipped rope, hopscotch or just chased one another around the playground. We had so much fun, and we didnt sit around and gossip and make fun of other people's clothes or their size. We were getting exercise and didnt know it. My how things have changed.

Yes, I am overweight. I have tried every diet, still can not get it off. I called my insurance company to inquire about surger. My company does not offer no benefit for weight-loss surgery. This made no sense to me especially since we live in "the fattest town in America." The surgery cost $23,000 dollars. If companys would recognize that it would alot cheaper to pay for surgery that is 80% successful then the expenses that comes with being overweight like heart disease; just to name one. I work for a great company and have a great paying job however I do not understand not contributing to the weight loss surgery benefit.

Man this guy is way off, Huntington isn't the fattest city, it's the P.H.A.T-test city! I think we need to take some legal action against this guy if he really wrote such lies about us. I'd settle for some old fashioned tar and feathering too. Being negative and having a bad attitude has never been a very effective way to solve a problem. Sure it gets people fired up but for the wrong reasons.

Posted by: CJ on Nov 15, 2008 at 11:59 AM
It reaches a tipping point, as more and more people get obese, everyone else around them subconsciously loses the stigma of weight gain, remember the study that showed if you had fat friends then you were more likely to be fat yourself. I think the lack of physical exercise, the availability of healthy foods, and the increasing ignorance in nutrition and cooking are the major causes. Personally, I find myself going to McDonalds more than the grocery stores because of many reasons. 1. The grocery is farther away. There used to be some closer ones but they've all closed. 2. The grocery store is too crowded. Yep since all the other stores closed, everybody has to go to the same one. 3. It seems easier and cheaper to be a McDonald's dollar millionaire than cooking like Julia Child. For some people, all they know and can do is be fat

weight problems = heart problems and other health conditions. anorexia= health problems as well. from working in a store here in ashland, i see what many of those who get food stamps buy, and just as an observation, i see a lot more junk food and pop in these peoples buggies. yes, these people are huge too and not in a good way. i'm talking 400 pounds or better. always using those electric scooters to get around knowing that there may be an old person who really needs this chair. whats funny is, they will go an park the chair at the door when they are done and walk off to their car like its nothing. the only thing that does strike me as obvious though is junk food is cheaper then healthy food, but i'm not that's the answer. i know cancer is bad in this area as well, so there's many health problems here.

Sounds as if you must be pretty lazy at least those "biggins" are off their rears doing their own shopping not setting on there rears letting someone else do it for them. Lets see the guy saw 200 pizza places in our phone book in Huntington {which we can prove that is bogus}, He thinks people are staring at him and his car, he goes around looking in elderly peoples mouths. I really think this goes deeper than him being rude and arrogant. I think he has Schizophrenia...

I watched the video on Huntington the fattest city in America and i think that it was a very bad thing to write about our area. We need to look at this as an American problem instead of putting the spotlight on any one area. The problems of obesity have real serious issues attached to it, what we need is the knowledge of what its doing to our bodies.

i work in ems here in the city and fat people are the absolute bain of my existance we have had many employees put off work with injuries sustained while moving these people out of their homes. most of it can be helped but everyone has an excuse you would be amazed the number of morbidly obese people are here in our city that are bed confined wheel chair confined or just refuse to leave their homes because of this condition. it is absurd that people can let themselves reach that point. if you weigh 600 pounds it doesn't take anything to lose weight small cut backs and movement around the house helps . you begin to lose weight and feel better and your metabolism is raised therefore your body burns calories for you this has to stop i have watched to many good employees sustain injury due to this nonsense sometimes career ending permanent injury .

Why is there a need to worry about how much people weigh ? Medical personel are gonna make noise about it but ask yourself how many obease crackheads you have seen lately ?Fat people seem to be calm tranquil even tempered good natured and happy . Its most of us who are not happy with them .Its a cruel world and for some reason we impose the idea thats ones apearence must conform .If huntington is the fattest city that might not be a bad thing .Is healthy a skinny blonde who watches the scale , eats lettuce and spends 1000 dollars a year on hair care and makeup? Skinny and neurotic or fat and happy you decide .

I am sure the citizens of Huntington will find someway to blame their obesity on President-elect Obama.

Posted by: Stan on Nov 14, 2008 at 06:03 PM
Undoubtedly people who are obese need not lay blame at all, but need to fix it with diet, exercise and appropriate medical care. The author probably fabricated a bit, he's getting a lot of attention for it. However, I followed a school bus yesterday evening and watched 11 children unload... All but 3 were already visibly obese. We definitely wouldn't seem to the outsider to care much about it when our children are reflecting the "stereotypes".

I agree with js .. it seems this guy already had his mind made when he came to Huntington. We may not be the healthiest state in the country but we're not the worst! Frankly, I just get sick of the same stereotypes always placed on WV residents. But I also agree with Jerry saying that we do little to actually CHANGE those stereotypes. So if this article (along with every other negative thing said about WV) upsets you .. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Don't just voice your opinion on here .. be active & do something. If you don't, then do you really have a right to complain?

There is NO WAY that Huntington is the fattest city in America because CHARLESTON is! We've eaten long and hard to earn that title and I for one want a recount! As far as the other comments he's reporting: They're ALSO true! We're the #1 most toothless state in the nation according to a CDC report 2 years ago. And as far as the drooping roofs? That's a given in many areas! While we have spent the last 40 years defending ourselves from these stereotypes (remember A. James Manchin?) we've done little to actually CHANGE them. So, while the truth hurts, the truth "might" someday set us free. In the meantime, I'm heading to one of the many all you can eat buffets to regain our proper fat status here!
