CHARLESTON, WVa, (WSAZ) -- Proposition 8 wasn't on the ballot in West Virginia, but it was in California, and when it passed, it meant gay marriage rights were taken away.

A rally outside Charleston City Hall Saturday afternoon was organized to spread the word about the issue. The goal was to show that equality is not a privilege; it's a right.

Gay and lesbian supporters held signs in an effort to gain support for their belief in same-sex marriage.

The goal behind today's rally was to get people to start thinking twice before they pass judgment on another person's lifestyle.

Stephen Smith, a civil rights activist, said, "We want to bring attention to it and show them it's not just something that's happening in California of New York or Miami. This is right here in West Virginia. This is a problem and we're here to address It."

Saturday's rally was part of a national movement organized by jointheimpact.com. The goal was to organize rallies in every state.

During the November election, California, Florida and Arizona all banned same-sex marriage.

TO WHOM EVER RE dr tyler: i was in no way shape or form judging or condoning this issue. i have several friends that are gay or lesbian and i love them all no matter what. i know exactly what Jesus says about marriage and i know what love is. so i want to make it clear that i love my brothers and sisters equally.

Willa, you should be equally appalled at a straight couple making out in public in front of children. This should be kept behind close doors which is what all of us are saying about the gay marriage issue. It is none of anyone else's business. Comparing into to murder or molestation is not equal because in that case you are hurting someone else. Gay marriage is consensual and doesn't hurt you at all. Check out my youtube vids for more on this. Just search my name. Peace.

if your NOT gay, BUT your married, what does adding to the definition of marriage do to you? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. are you afraid it will make you gay then? NOPE. you will still be straight and in your happy little marriage. good lord, you all complain and shove your beliefs down everyone throat like they believe what you believe. THEY DON'T THOUGH. THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO BELIEVE WHAT THEY WISH, AND NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO FORCE THEIR BELIEFS ON ANYONE. i suppose you all are not sinners, and your so perfect. well, your wrong. as said here many times, we are all sinners.we all have the right to ask for forgiveness.
