GREENBRIER and MONROE counties, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Disturbing video of how turkeys are treated in some West Virginia factory farms has surfaced.

Shot by an undercover investigator from the animal rights group PETA, the video is of the Aviagen Turkeys breeding factories in Monroe and Greenbrier counties.

PETA members said they want the workers shown in the video off the job and charged with animal cruelty. They're also asking the public to pass on turkey this holiday season in protest.

While PETA always has advocated a vegetarian diet, its members believe the video will make any meat-eater think twice about serving turkey this holiday season.

Be forewarned: the video link above includes scenes that may be disturbing to some viewers. Among the images are of a worker repeatedly stomping a turkey and another twisting a bird's neck.

PETA claims claims the undercover video was shot at Aviagen Turkeys factories in Greenbrier and Monroe counties between September and November of this year.

"We certainly advise people this Thanksgiving, if you want to make a difference and are disturbed by what this video shows, to keep birds off their plate this season," said Daphna Nachminovitch of PETA.

As alarming as the video may be, PETA members said this type of treatment of animals happens all over the country. PETA began investigating the Aviagen company after receiving tips about what was going on in its West Virginia factories. Subsequently, the group sent an undercover investigator to work at those factories.

PETA members said the company is now aware of the video. The company released a statement Wednesday and said the acts are still under investigation, and the employees involved could lose their jobs.

The supervisor whose voice is heard on the video tape has been suspended until the investigation is completed. The Greenbrier County Sheriff's Department said no charges have been filed in this case. It is under investigation in Monroe County where the sheriff was out of the office Wednesday.

drew what silly comments, women have achoice whether to terminate pregnancy or not, no one forced them. two wrongs don't make a right and why should the animal suffer because of this. all living creatures feel pain

After reading some of the comments on here it is appaling at the ignorance shown. All those individuals who feel West Virginia is given a bad name, read the ignorant comments on here its easy to see why.

Its behavior like this that gives WV a bad name. A bunch of rednecks abusing turkeys. I think its rediculous when people are shocked that West Virginians are ridiculed and made fun of when abuse like this occurs. Welcome to West Virginia.

For Amy. God put animals on this planet to feed his people, NOT for "his people" to torture, abuse, and inflict merciless suffering upon. More than 99% of the turkeys in this world are farmed, they have no defense against humans, as with the chickens, hogs and cattle. They wouldn't be here if not for farms so are their rights to a decent life obliterated just for human's enjoyment before they die? As for your deer hunting, if hunters would tell the truth, stay away from the standard justifications, they only hunt because they like it, not "to put food on the table" because there are many more beef and poultry eaters than deer eaters. It's a game they enjoy plain and simple. They spend their vacation time from work, their money and their entire mind-set on hunting, not for requirement but for pleasure and entertainment. I don't have to like it and I won't like it, obviously you do, but I'll stick up for Bambi until the day I die.

Posted by: deelee on Nov 22, 2008 at 04:50 PM
Dear Heather - hunting is needed to control population, granted, but surely you will admit, it's the mentality of the hunters that makes people like me sick and nowhere in their minds are they concerned with animal welfare or overpopulation. Have you ever sit through one of the tv hunting shows??? Give me a break! They all but hyperventilate at first glance of a majestic buck, huge turkey, or whatever else they are hunting. They don't want a small one (one that is just as responsible for that pesky overpopulation) - they want the king daddy or none at all. They sound like raving lunatics after their kill - how it's going to look so splendidly on the wall, what a "fine animal" they've killed. You feed your rats to your snakes but i know what I'm talking about - I lived with a hunting fanatic for 15 yeas and it simply turns my stomach. People feed them corn, bait them into their backyards then as soon as they get the op, they kill a deer that no longer fears them. Nice.....

Let us all pray for these turkeys that they may be protected, that God send angels and comfort them in these terrifying times. And lets ask God to forgive those who are so cruel to his own creations.

Posted by: stevie p on Nov 21, 2008 at 05:57 PM
not to get off this turkey topic, Ive got something to say about you non hunters. the reason for harvesting animals is because of over population. if there was a law against it do you think justice would be served? (Thank God it isn't) He put animals on this earth in order for us to live. What I like to do is give you some property and some seeds for you to grow your own food (enough to last you for a year) and put animals like deer for instance,on your property and let's see if you can survive. I bet you that that deer will have a smorgasbord and enjoy it.and also if a hunter harvest a deer don't behave like a child and say poor deer, that might have been the one that could of hit your vehicle. the next time you go for a drive, look for dead deer along the roadways, and think of how many families that could of fed.

Posted by: Corella on Nov 21, 2008 at 05:46 PM
How someone can injure an animal as severely as what we see in this video is amazing. I myself am a vegetarian because of cruelty like this, I could never injure an animal unless they were threatening my life or my families life. When people injure an animal like this it can lead to worse things, injuring their own children and family members is next after this type of cruelty, they not only should be fired but should not be allowed to ever own an animal again, and they need some psychological evaluations. This is just ridiculous.

Posted by: Jason on Nov 21, 2008 at 04:53 PM
It takes all sorts of rhetoric, "logic" and fist-banging, chest-thumping bravado to defend killing sentient beings. Eating a compassionate, veggie diet takes absolutely no justification. There's nothing magical about protein: amino acids are just as good from plants.

Posted by: David on Nov 21, 2008 at 04:00 PM
Where is the WV Department of Agriculture and the WV Health Department? Don't they have rules concerning in-humane treatment without PETA getting into it? Just a thought and my vote don't count.

Posted by: Amy on Nov 21, 2008 at 02:30 PM
For all of you griping about hunters and how they shouldn't do it, how about being over populated with deer, turkey, bear, rabbits and any other animal that's hunted? There's not a thing wrong with hunting and it's been done since we were first put on this Earth. You have hunters that kill for the sport and leave the meat, yes that's wrong. Hunters that hunt for the enjoyment and EAT their kill are just putting food on the table. And another thing all you on here griping about how you can't afford Thanksgiving dinner, I'm sure your internet and computer is more money out of your pocket than dinner would be. As for the turkeys, no they don't deserve to be treated the way they were in the video, nor does any animal.

Posted by: Drew on Nov 21, 2008 at 02:21 PM
I don't really care for Turkey that much (twice a year is plenty for me) but just because of the IDIOTS at PETA...I'll be sure to eat a little extra this year and enjoy every bite...just because it's a free country!!! If PETA wants to stop the killing why don't they try to stop abortion...oh, that's right...pro abortion people say a fetus is a parasite...it can't live without the host (mother)...why don't we see how long planned parenthood and other pro-abortion organizations survive without the government giving them millions of dollars...then we'll see who the real parasites are. I don't think people should abuse animals but I don't think it should be a crime either...animals are not humans...we have more important things to deal with than a few turkeys getting thrown around and their heads stomped on...like the 3000 babies killed DAILY by abortion, or the drug problem in Huntington...

Posted by: Ashley on Nov 21, 2008 at 01:46 PM
I am ashamed to come from the same state as you jerks! I'm a meat eater, and I often feel that PETA goes WAY TOO FAR in their efforts to ensure "ethical" treatment of animals, but these is just down right abuse!!! Since when is abuse, in any form, ok? Guess what one of the first signs of a sociopath and future killer are? CRUELTY toward animals, and APATHY to pain! It's only a matter of time before these guys move on to a human, if they aren't already. We treat rapist and child molesters better than we treat the food we put in our body! I pray you wake up and realize that abuse and TORTURE are never ok for any species!!!

Posted by: sara on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:31 PM
Ryan - stick to the subject... we are talking about animal cruelty, not abortion, and by the way, in my opinion, the only "humans" who could approve of the late term abortion process you are referring to are the ones hurling and brutalizing innocent birds or other animals. You're preaching to the choir.

Posted by: Heather on Nov 21, 2008 at 11:37 AM
Deelee- I'm an animal lover but your comments are ignorant. Deer would actually mess up the ecosytem if they were to overpopulate and many people hunt bear. Last time I checked, bears are pretty huge and can defend themselves. Hunters have to wear orange because of other hunters. Deer are color blind. I don't believe in killing for the mere "sport of it", but I have no problem for a hunter to go out and kill a deer and use the meat. As for the turkeys- no they shouldn't be mistreated. My boyfriend and I own many snakes and breed our own rats for their food source and we have never mistreated our rats, even though we know "they're just going to die anyway" (like some other people have said on here). Anyone who breed and raises a food item should know that if you mistreat them, you run the risk of infection and contamination. So they actually shouldn't be mistreated for many other reasons other than "they just don't need to be abused."

This story isn't anything compaired to what goes on in other places. You should go by the Tyson plant in San Antonio and watch them unload chickens off of caged trucks that have just came in off the interstate. Most of the feathers have been striped off from the ride and some are dead. If they can't stand up when unloaded they are kicked like a foot ball over into the dead pile. This is just a part of production, like those hogs we seen from the truck wreck the other day. They were raised on growth hormones then shot up with drugs for transportation! If you don't like this world we should start a fund raiser, for a trip to the next galaxy. Until then let's don't take the lid off of Pandora's box ! !

Why are you worried about turkeys that you know you are going to eat next week when our country is having abortions everyday where they suck the brains out of a baby? What a sick bunch of people.

Posted by: cosmo on Nov 21, 2008 at 05:47 AM
here we go again, kill innocence little babies, but spare a dumb turkey. if you're hungry enough you will eat turkey no matter how it's killed...

Posted by: Disgusted Viewer on Nov 21, 2008 at 05:11 AM
I was completely disgusted by the lack of compassion along with the abundance of ignorance that some of "fine citizens" are spewing in this blog! I agree with deelee, and I have wished for years that the 'hunters' would become the hunted! I would bet that there would be a whole lot less of this backwoods spit 'n' scratch mindset that is so prevalent in the tri-state area! You people give rednecks a bad name! These poor turkeys are born in captivity and the least that these so-called human beings can do for them is to treat with respect if not kindness during their short stay on this earth! If there are any people out there that honestly believe that the ones that committed these crimes will not (or more likely have already) do the same thing to a child or a wife, then I really wish that I could live in your delusional world! It truly must be paradise! How did that old saying go?....Oh, yeah. Ignorance is bliss...

Posted by: deelee on Nov 20, 2008 at 11:04 PM
THANK YOU DONNA! I can answer that for you - NONE of the big strong wooly hunters would kill anything if it could defend itself against them. The fun of it all would be gone and perhaps we would see alot of human idiots in blaze orange tied to the tops and backs of SUVs. God we can only wish.... As for Josh - get over yourself! try and make some friends - take a step away from your pc for a while and talk to people in person for a change - or can't you find anyone to listen to you????

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 20, 2008 at 10:55 PM
Hunting animals is alot different than torturing these defenseless animals. They have no way to escape, at least a deer or turkey in the wild have more of a chance than these birds did. These are domesticated birds that depend on humans for their survival and its unacceptable to see them walking around with broken wings because of the abuse. I do know what farmlife is all about because I have been there and done that. I remember when my grandparents first bought their farm. No electric, indoor plumming and etc but I guarantee you one thing they never mistreated their animals. Chickens, pigs, goats whatever, we respected what god gave us. People are heartless.

Posted by: To Sunny on Nov 20, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Your parents must not have liked you for them to name you sunny! There just birds that are going to be killed anyways. When they are killed its not fast, THEY STILL SUFFER!

No Turkey For My Family's Holiday Dinner As A Matter Of Fact I,m Returning Both Turkeys I Bought, All The Sick sad Humans If You Want To Call Them That Should Be Locked Up. No animals are not humans, but they still hurt like any living breathing being, you people make me sick, the animals have more sense than you...you are weak minded...take your guns and hunt down defensless animals to make you feel like such a man...how many of you would be out there hunting knowing that it could shoot back? and to kick and animal or torture it because you can...makes you no man at all...just a coward...alot of times the animals have more sense than alot of you... I would like to kick you in the head and twist your neck a little bit...

RE: the turkey fiasco - These guys probably handle 15,000 per day and they are shown with 2-3 birds out of 2 1/2 months. I think this is NOT the standard but an incident. Not everyone needs to be punished but the few dealt with properly. Don't get caught up in the biased rhetoric. It appears to me, these guys depend on turkeys to put food on their tables (no pun intended!)

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:27 PM
I'm with John. You people don't know squat about survival and farming. We won't even know how to survive once we become a third world country! Get over it.

Posted by: Stevie p on Nov 20, 2008 at 03:39 PM
This is crazy. I want to know why they kill turkies and shove the neck and giblets up in them, and when I'm done cooking it I later see it in a bag that should have been removed before I even cooked the darn thing. Hows that for cruelty.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 20, 2008 at 03:11 PM
Well Mr Obvious, it looks like you will not be getting any white meat because they are all bruised up by being slammed into the cages. People are sick.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 20, 2008 at 03:07 PM
tencar, the way I see it, there should be no difference in the treatment between domesticated cats & dogs and turkeys. In other countries cats and dogs are a food source just like turkeys are here. It doesn't matter if they are raised "just for food" for our behinds, humane treatment should still be practiced. Hunters that go out and shoot their turkey have more respect than these low lifes who are trying to make themselves feel superior. I think they should all be fined and charged with animal cruelty and the supervisor should have a stiffer penalty for allowing it to happen. Let's say that someone's dog was picked up by animal control, would they appreciate it if the officer just slammed the animal into the kennel. He justifies the behavior by saying, well they should have kept the dog confined. Is that right? No, not by a long shot. People need to get a life.

Posted by: copper on Nov 20, 2008 at 02:15 PM
make no mistake about it, if this were in kentucky you would go to jail for a felony in this situation. the animal laws have changed for the better since the implementation of romeos law. even if this animal will end up on the dinner table it deserves a quick and painless way to die. i do eat turkey, but i do not stand for animal cruelty. wva never has had a good reputation for treating animals right. probably half of the population in wva has a lower i.q. than most animals out there. ill take the turkey over billy bob any day of the week. they probably have the same amount of teeth, but we know billy bob is gonna be in a different weight class. for the people who see nothing wrong with this, i can only hope the same thing happens to you. it happened to a lot of people in WWII. did you think turkeys didnt feel pain? start a new trend wva, go to college.

Posted by: Meet eater on Nov 20, 2008 at 01:03 PM
Don't get me wrong, I love meat. However, lets just say that the abuse that these animals are receiving bursts internal organs and the fluid from those organs travel to the meat and you eat it and become deathly sick - How do you feel now??

I am an AVID animal LOVER but I also eat more than my fair share of meat... I LOVE TURKEY I COULD EAT ONE EVERY NIGHT.... BUT This is an OUTRAGE !!!! There is NO SENSE for ANY animal be treated this way... They should live a GREAT life before dying ...NO matter what they are being raised for it DOES NOT matter.... These "people" if you call them that I say MONSTERS should think that if this was a child that had only 1 month to live they wouldn't treat it like that just because it wasn't gonna see Christmas...I would HOPE that thay or ANYONE would give that child a full life no matter how short it was gonna be.. ANIMALS HAVE THAT SAME RIGHT !!! I hope they ALL get FIRED and the plant is SHUT DOWN for good...No matter what the owner says, he knew what was happening, if not then he's not a good bussiness man to not be watching his investments !! I wish the worst on ALL involved... SHOW FACES NEXT TIME SO REAL JUSTICE CAN BE DONE !!!!

I'm suprised someone isn't on here complaining people who are concerned don't care about humans. News flash people, people who do these kind of things to animals are the people who are more likely abuse other humans. If they are that frustrated and hate their jobs that much, quit.

I am so ashamed of these workers... I love turkey but agree with PETA that they should not be treated in this manner. I think the people who did this should be prosecuted and the owner of the farm fined. I hope in the future, people who own farms like this will keep an eye on their workers. I know animals are going to be slaughtered but there is no reason to be cruel to them. People who need to take their anger out on an animal needs Medical attention fast, they have serious issues, and whos to say they don't harm children, who are also innocent. People who make fun of this issue should also me ashamed. This treatment was truely uncalled for. The Goverment should have regulation regarding how animal farms cage and transport the livestock.

People who have no regard for animals cannot truly have regard for humans. Most of the animals on this planet are here because of humans then they are treated worse than we can imagine without seeing it firsthand. If you choose to eat meat, that's fine, but thinking abuse and torture to an animal who has not a chance of survival is OK, that's barbaric and just plain sick. How you can sleep at night condoning such treatment is beyond me.

Posted by: Diana on Nov 20, 2008 at 09:12 AM
Thank you PETA for all you do for animal rights!!! If it wasn't for PETA or the Humane Society, animals would still be treated the same as they were 200 years ago, or as they are in China - skinned alive on busy streets where people just walk by as if nothing out of the ordinary is happening.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 20, 2008 at 09:11 AM

Thanks so much to WSAZ for running this story! I saw this straight from PETA and to say it's appalling is just an understatement. For it to be shot in WV, makes it simply sickening. First we saw how WV treats used up thoroughbred race horses and now the turkeys. I do not eat turkey, I do not eat beef or pork - why? Just for this very reason - the way animals are treated during their short lives and the brutal way they are killed. One of these days, hopefully I'll give up chicken, too - I'm pretty sure they don't get any better ride than the others. Again, THANK YOU WSAZ for the public awareness.

theres a lot more idiots like them around here. you could trust a turkey over a human in most cases. this is just another example of the filth man has brought to all things around him. i eat turkey, but i dont think this is right at all. they do feel pain. hope these rednecks get fired and burn below when they done with life. instant karma gonna get you, knock u right off your feet. good luck turkey boys, hahaha.

Most people are missing the point. I was taught that that if you can mistreat an animal, you will do the same to people. This is so sad. I was raised on a small farm. No-one in my family would ever think to mistreat an animal. My father would have whipped us. I know PETA can be extreme, but at least they care enough to bring this sort of thing to light.

Turkeys were domesticated so that we could produce them for "FOOD". So why are people trying to make a big deal about something that is going to be on the dining room table anyway? I think those people need to get a life or how about go after the people that treat their pets like trash and don't take care them, instead of the people that are producing "FOOD" for the rest of us to eat?

this comment is for "na" you can afford a computer and to be on the internet but you can't afford to eat? as for the treatment of the birds, i agree its not necessary to torture them just because they are going to be eaten anyhow.

To the person na that won't have anything to eat...you could sell your computer and shut off your internet source for extra cash. Also, there are Churches all over the tri-state making Thanksgiving dinner. I doubt that there are too many people with nothing at all to eat considering that this area was just rated the fattest in the nation. Ya'll are getting fed (overfed) somewhere.

I'm thinking about boycotting turkey for Thanksgiving. Let me see, do I want a tofu sandwich for Thanksgiving or do I want turkey? I think I will have turkey.

Id eat turkey if it was on my table this Thanksgiving, or for that matter Id eat about any food on it since we wont have any.You all enjoy your dinner but remember there will be some people out here with nothing at all to eat.

Why abuse these turkeys before it's time to kill them! I don't think it's funny at all! It makes one wonder about people like this! People that grew up on farms didn't do this to their animals before they were slaughtered for food!

I pray for those poor turkeys. May God send angels to protect them and give them comfort in their time of need during these terrifying times for them. May God forgive those who are so cruel to his own creations.

I agree with the other comments here. They're our dinner....why should we be worried about how they are treated. We should be focusing on keeping our children from being abused, not worrying about animals. People first!

I'll have some dark and white meat please! Oh, and some dry dressing, mashed taters, gravy, green beans, sweet taters, cranberry sauce......yum!

have you seen how PETA treats some of their animals? go to http://www.petakillsanimals.com/ to be more informed about these "animal lovers"

would be good if peta could video how some of the kids are being treated in foster care

I think that every one of the workers and the employer should be punished to fullest extent. they need to be done just like they done the poor turkeys. it is a shame that we have people here in WV. that allow others to do that. how would they feel if they were treated the way they done the poor turkeys. you go PETA and make them pay for what they have done. I don't eat turkey but i do believe that it is so shameful for this to have happened. and the employer to let this awful thing to happen

Posted by: TurkeyDay on Nov 19, 2008 at 10:11 PM
It's not nice of how they're treated but I'm still going to eat Turkey and any other meat I like. gobble gobble.

PETA can be extreme but at times like these, its good that PETA exists.

Lets get real people. These are birds we are talking about. They were just seconds away from dying anyway. They are gona end up on someones table next week anyway. Get a life, these birds don't have souls. They were put here on this earth for us to EAT>

Does PETA not stand for People Eating Tasty Animals? What are they fussing about

Posted by: annon on Nov 19, 2008 at 08:22 PM
I know the animals are going to be killed and all but OMG is that any reason to treat something so bad? I think this is sick and disturbing!!!
