POINT PLESANT, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's been almost a year since Marshall University student Leah Hickman was found murdered in the basement of her apartment building.

Now her friends and family are working to keep her memory alive.

Hundreds of people gathered in Point Pleasant Saturday to run in the Leah Hickman 5k.

Organizers say they wanted to show the family and community that they have not forgotten about the case.

We caught up with some of Leah's friends who say time of year is pretty tough with the holidays ahead.

No arrests have ever been made in Leah's murder.

I didn't know Leah but I pray for the family every day that they can have closure and find the person that did this awful thing to her. From all the stories that I've heard about her she was a wonderful person. I will keep the family in my thoughts and prayers!!!

I am sooooo ticked and feel so bad for Leah's family. I was in an accident recently in Huntington and now see why nothing is being done! They dont care about anyone but themselves and they are the most disrespectful bunch of people I have seen. We may be from Point, but at least we know how to respect folks. If this was Chief Holbrooks daughter or family member, you can bet your sweet rear this case would have already been solved. Please have a little bit of respect and passion for this family, and bring the horrible person, male/female to justice.!!!!

I used to have faith that the police were working this case and would solve it. I no longer believe that. I can't believe that they STILL don't have the DNA testing back. I have been told that the police do not even keep the family informed and don't like taking their calls. Most likely because they don't have any answers.

When are they going to release the information on her death?

I hope and pray Leah's killer is caught and brought to justice. If not in this life then he/she will pay in eternity. May God continue to help this family during their crisis.

I can't imagine the pain the family and friends have suffered for one year. My goodness lets get together and hire detectives. Let's do justice for Leah campaign

I just wanted to say that I have thought about this poor child nearly everyday since we heard the first news coverage of her. I understand that there are other news events, but obviously people still care and still want to know about what happens with this case. I was just wondering if I looked over it, but I used to be able to see a link for "stories we're following" on the main news page for leah. Don't see one now. I sure hope they don't let this poor girl and her family fade into the background.

Scholarships are nice, but maybe this $$ should go toward hiring private investigators who may actually solve the crime!!!!!!

we havent we heard anymore on this! this girl was murdered and the police dont know anything! it just seems to me that they do not know what they are doing and they need to get some professionals in here working on this case! Huntington owes that to the family! Try to solve it, there is a murder out there and we have no idea what to even be afraid of!

Doesn't look as though the killer will ever be found...God be with the family..Just have faith...I had something similar happen in my family. The not knowing is bad, but you just go on.

6,000 dollars was raised by this event...what a wonderful scholarship for our children and great way to remember leah. oh and to anonymous on nov. 23 at 5:07 am you should plan a fund raiser for your victim like the kind people of point pleasant did for leah maybe then you would get some news coverage.

Posted by: sam on Nov 23, 2008 at 04:56 PM
why are we paying for the so-called detectives in huntington. have they ever solved anything ? what about the kids that was murdered a few years ago ? it hurts bad enough to lose your child, but never knowing who done it has to be even worse. i lost my son in 1989. the cops never did finish their report. why even have them if they can't do their jobs ?

I think itis a great thing that David and Connie Pyles did. Leah may be gone, but is far from forgotten. I didn't know her, but think of her everyday! I hope her family gets closure soon, this has gone on far too long.

What did happen to the DNA that they said that they had. They said they had a possiable suspect. Even if it turned out they were wrong they need to let the people know. We are all praying every day to catch this monster that done this to this young lady. God Bless her and her family!!!

Posted by: Jenni on Nov 23, 2008 at 07:51 AM
I just hope they are able to close this case soon and finally let Leah rest in peace. And her family would finally have the closure they deserve. The person that was able to do something so vicious to one person will surely be able to do it again if provoked. This person really needs to be behind bars.

I will speak the usual HPD rhetoric: We are working on it, waiting for results, have some good leads, blah, blah, blah

Posted by: cyndi on Nov 22, 2008 at 10:43 PM

good job HPD,,,,,, for nothing

Posted by: ... on Nov 22, 2008 at 05:59 PM
and still no arrests. do the men of the HPD not look at this picture daily? if not, they should be required to!!! it's sad that the people in our town that we expect to handle these types of things appropriately, efficiently and successfully have failed us so miserably.

Thanks to everyone,. A special thanks to David and Connie Pyles.

I would like to know what happened with the dna results the law enforcement were waiting on...they said they had a possible suspect pending the results...
