HOCKING HILLS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Until this year, you had to go to Alaska, to the Rockies or Central America to fly through the trees on a zip line.
Earlier this fall, NewsChannel 3 reporter Randy Yohe ventured just north of Athens, Ohio, to the scenic Hocking Hills for a tree canopy tour.
"I think of a canopy as way up high in the trees, and that's where we are," said Mike MacTurk, a tourist from Canton, Ohio. "It's every bit of what I expected."
A forest network of 10 zip lines and four sky bridges gives most canopy tour adventurers a never before seen perspective of the Hocking Hills at heights up to 80 feet above ground. Trained zip guides help participants gear up and "swing" through the trees like modern day Tarzans.
"It's more than I hoped for," said Jim Tidd of Pittsburgh. "It's good and safe."
Randy met zip liners on the Hocking Hills canopy tour from as far away as Europe, Kansas and Wisconsin. The owners said they plan to expand their forest network and will start zipping again this spring.

I thought this was so neat. I was so surprised when I saw Randy Yohe doing this. I hope that Hocking Hills continues this.
We are open from March thru December at Captain Zipline Adventure Tours, www.captainzipline.com. Anytime we get a group of 4 or more, we will fly across our rocky canyon 100-200 feet below. Why not ski and zip in Colorado? Our tour was one of the first in the US (opened 2005). We have styled our cables like the Costa Rican ones where you track your gloved hand behind the cable to steer and brake. Very extreme, but it is a "high thrill-to-skill ratio and anyone can do it. We also took the first mountain bike zipping across the canyon last week. What a rush! A little out of control, but we're working on it!! Salida has the best whitewater rafting and the most popular river in the U.S.--the Arkansas River and Brown's Canyon and The Royal Gorge with class 4 and 5 water. Visit us out here at 7,000 feet in the "Gem of the Rockies". Zip On!!
Congratulations Randy Yohe...You're a real journalist, now!
