CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Environmentalists will keep the heat on
Gov. Joe Manchin over Massey Energy's planned mountaintop removal
mine on the Coal River Mountain.
Whitesville-based Coal River Mountain Watch will hold press conferences in Charleston and Beckley Dec. 9 to discuss a study
it's commissioned.
While Richmond, Va.-based Massey wants to mine 6,000 acres,
environmentalists are trying to preserve the mountain for a wind
farm.
The news conference will focus on research by Downstream
Strategies of Morgantown. It shows wind development is a wise use
not just for Coal River Mountain, but for other parts of southern
West Virginia.
Manchin has declined to intervene in the dispute, saying it's inappropriate for him to interfere with the regulatory process.

you people will never get it - as long as you continue to elect those who allow it - then expect it to continue - When you are told to change the clowns over in charleston to correct the issue and you do not even try then do not cry
Renewable energy creates more employment than does coal mining. It is incredible that MTR--and the ruining of U.S. citizens' lives--is allowed to continue.
Half of the folks I see on the news worried about the environment are the ones when I was growing up that did not work or contribute to society. All they did was party and contribute to being on government assistance. What is this the new welfare for West Virginia since Brickstreet has almost killed off all the compensation fraud in the state? I would like to know who the Coal River Mountain Watch Group really think they are fooling when some of the members in their organization worked for clear cutting loggin crews in the 80s and now want to play since it is not compensating me I want to get publicity for it. If you are serious about the environment then please do the wise thing and legislate it - you have time to draft your bill and introduce it this session. If you cannot write a bill and get it introduced and considered then next election change those who blocked it during the election. That is how democracy works not using neo nazi tactics like the eco terrorist groups condone
