The stomach bug is the common thread this week.

In Charleston, doctors at ABC Pediatrics are seeing a lot of kids with strep throat. They're also seeing some allergic rhinitis, which is an inflammation of the nasal passages, causing a runny nose and itchy nose and eyes. It's triggered by dust or pollen or other allergens. A stomach virus is also going around, causing vomiting, diarrhea or both.

In Ashland, Ky., doctors at Tri-State Pediatrics are seeing some cases of strep throat. It's pretty contagious and is treated with a course of antibiotics. Mono is also going around. It's a virus that causes a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, fever, sore throat, even a skin rash. Mycoplasma is also going around. It's a respiratory illness that can cause headache, cough, sore throat and fever. It's also contagious, usually through coughing and sneezing. Gastroenteritis, or stomach virus, is also making the rounds.

In Point Pleasant, W.Va., Dr. Ed Ayers is seeing some patients with pneumonia. It's affecting a few children, but mainly adults. He's also seeing a lot of kids with a gastrointestinal virus that's causing vomiting and diarrhea.

Doctors at Christ's Care Pediatrics in South Shore, Ky., are seeing upper respiratory infections, and more gastrointestinal virus there, as well.

In fact, among the four areas we checked in with this week, all four are seeing plenty of patients with the stomach bug. The age-old advice to wash your hands is a good reminder for everyone.

some parents don't want to deal with their sick children, so they send them to school sick and it infects other children. it is either the stomach bug, strep, or LICE. if your child is sick the parents should take the day off from work and deal with their sick children at home until they get better, but some parents don't want to miss work to take care of their sick kids............

it should be up to parents to keep children home from school when they are sick instead of sending them to school so the school nurse can treat them..cause while they are at school the can infect other children...shame on you parents keep them home till they are better...
