A former superintendent of the Cabell County School System is now facing up to ten years in prison.
A judge sentenced Dick Jefferson today to for soliciting a 14-year-old girl over the internet.
Jefferson’s attorney pleaded with the judge to consider all Jefferson has done for the community and keep the former school leader out of jail.
But Judge Dan O'Hanlon says there are two Dick Jeffersons. O’Hanlon says one is the well respected, retired educator.
The judge says the other Dick Jefferson is the one who had a secret addiction to pornography and who talked to a police officer online who Jefferson thought was a 14-year-old girl.
The judge says he doesn't think Jefferson can be trusted yet to control his bad side.
Jefferson spoke before the sentencing. He said, "your honor I'm sorry for the terrible mistake that I have made. I have suffered because of that this is not the hardest thing. The hardest thing I did was to face my church and admit my sin and ask for forgiveness. I believe God has forgiven me. I place myself in your hands for the decision and I will abide by that decision."
Jefferson's attorney says he will apply for home confinement for his client and the judge will likely consider that option.
But Jefferson will at least spend the next several days in jail and this sentence will ensure Jefferson is monitored for at least the next two years.
Jefferson will have to register as a sex offender once he gets out of jail.
