Top Ten Dangerous Intersections in Charleston

The Charleston Police Department routinely analyzes crash data to assist with planning of Selective Traffic Enforcement programs. According to recent data, (the data was collected from January - July 2006) we have found the following intersections to be the most dangerous in terms of the number of reportable motor vehicle crashes:

1. Pennsylvania Avenue & Washington Street West
2. Pennsylvania Avenue & Lee Street West
3. Clendenin Street & Lee Street West
4. Pennsylvania Avenue & Randolph Street
5. 36th Street & MacCorkle Avenue
6. 35th Street & MacCorkle Avenue
7. I-64 & Exit 58A(Oakwood Road)
8. Virginia Street & Leon Sullivan Way
9. Clendenin Street & Lee Street East
10. Brooks Street & Lee Street East

The Charleston Police Department Traffic Division will aggressively increase the enforcement of traffic laws at the above locations in a effort to make these intersections safer. Motorists will see an increase in law enforcement activity at these locations during the remainder of 2006. Officers will specifically be looking for speeding violations, red light violations, aggressive driving and following too close violations. Any driver who displays any of the above behaviors while driving will be stopped and cited.
