BELLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- DuPont plant officials and the DEP are investigating the cause of a phosphoric acid leak at the plant in Belle Monday afternoon.
Metro 911 tells WSAZ.com that 4800 gallons of 35% phosphoric acid leaked out of its tank at the plant shortly before 2pm. A statement from DuPont says that a large majority of this acid was contained in the storage tank dike, but a portion did make it to the ground and into the Kanawha River.
No one was injured during the leak or cleanup.
DuPont and the Department of Environmental Protection are assessing the environmental impact of this event. DuPont describes the 35% phosphoric acid as mildly corrosive to the skin if exposed. It is used as a nutrient for the microbes in the waste treatment facility at the plant.
Metro 911 says there was no immediate hazard to people outside the plant.

So tell me Scot, who can't spell? You or your parents? Everyone knows Scot has 2 t's. Dude? People still use that word? Good grief!
at 35% this stuffs as dangerous to people as a can of coke. quit crying and realize that you're gonna have these things. if its man made its gonna break some time. its not like thats the worst thing in the river.
Totally agree with Rob here. There's NEVER anything "dangerous" about all these leaks OF course not! SAME old crap the powers-that-be down at the Uranium Plant in Piketon has always claimed too. BS! Simply the astronomical cancer rate down there speaks for itself These "leaks" which are "not dangerous" at all these ones here in WV are NOT benign either What will it take? Another one like the plant that blew up in India back in the 80's which killed all those people? Same stuff they also made up in Nitro? NONE of these places are safe & anyone who believes they are is delusional
