Students in Kanawha County are getting ready to hit the books again. And many people may have been finishing up some last minute school shopping on Sunday.

Back to school shopping is one of the busiest shopping times of the year, only second to the day after Thanksgiving.

Sue Manahan and her daughter Erin are trying to finish up school shopping. Erin and many other students across Kanawha County headed back to school on Monday for yet another school year.
Sue Manahan expects to spend a couple hundred dollars this year to get her two children ready for school.

According to the national retail federation survey, the average family will spend about $527 dollars on back to school shopping this year. That's up from about $444 dollars in 2005.

Notebooks, pens, and colored pencils are all items that are fairly cheap when it comes to back to school shopping.

Luxury items are the reason school shopping gets really expensive for some families.
There are backpacks with straps, without straps, with wheels, with speakers, and tons of different choices. Many kids try to find a way to get the luxury backpacks and other elaborate items into the back to school shopping carts.

Fortunately, Sue Manahan didn't get Erin one of those backpacks, but she still managed to spend sixty bucks on some last minute items.
