Two hospitals in our region are getting national attention. They were recently named "Best 50 Places to Work for Employees over 50."

The award came from the American Association of Retired People, and the organization looked at the benefits and opportunities offered to this aging workforce.

From the time she gets in, until the time she leaves, Katherine Edwards is busy.

Katherine just turned 50. She says she wasn't surprised that St. Mary's was honored by AARP.

“After you've been here for so long, there are very few places you can go back out into the workplace where you can make good wages and benefit packages as we have here,” said Edwards.

St. Mary's was number 47 on the list, and Cabell-Huntington was number 23.

On the day we met Bonnie Nelson she was celebrating her 43 years at Cabell-Huntington hospital.

“I started out as a candy striper at age 16, and during nursing school I was hired as an aid,” said Nelson.

At her retirement party, Bonnie remembered her career and realized that at Cabell-Huntington, retirement does not mean your career is over.

“I have the opportunity if I want to come back and work casual or part-time, that opportunity is available,” said Nelson.

AARP looks at companies that have good recruiting practices and offer opportunities in training and alternative work options for those over 50.

This is also St. Mary's 4th time being honored.
