Lincoln County ATV Safety

The number of people killed while riding 4-wheelers in West Virginia just increased to 45. That's why one county is working to do its part to prevent deaths and injuries, and some riders are not happy.

Here's the dilemma: the county wants to increase patrols for 4-wheeler safety. They're even going so far as purchasing some ATVs so deputies can patrol the locations where accidents have happened, but some riders think this is just the county's way of taking away their riding privileges. This is a hot topic, especially in Lincoln County.

In West Hamlin, the Sheriff's Department and County Commission are reminding riders what the rules are.

Jamie Parsons said he is an experienced rider and does not think its right to have patrols on every corner.

"I can respect them trying to make it right," said Parsons. "But I think they're going about it in some of the wrong ways."

The county wants to increase patrols and keep riders from the two things that cause the most accidents: speeding and drunk driving. Besides increasing patrols, the county also plans other ways of preventing deaths and injuries such as clearing right of ways of brush so drivers can see an on-coming ATV more easily. They also plan to create education programs within Lincoln County schools. The county has not yet purchased those 4-wheelers, but these ATV's are in the budget for this year.
