FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo says he will
seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate next year, setting
up a possible rematch with two-term Republican incumbent Jim
Bunning.
Mongiardo made the announcement in a written statement released
Monday morning.
The longtime physician from Kentucky's coalfields said he first
entered politics to improve healthcare and that he can do more as a
senator to accomplish that than he could as lieutenant governor.
Mongiardo is one of three prominent Democrats who have been
considering running against Bunning. Attorney General Jack Conway
and Auditor Crit Luallen have said they also are mulling that
possibility and would announce their decisions by spring.
