West Virginia's top-selling liquor is anything but top-shelf. The state Alcohol Beverage Control Administration says the top seller in the state between August 2005 and August 2006 was the half-gallon bottle size of Vladimir, a brand of vodka that typically sells for 20 percent less than other brands.
269,232 half-gallon bottles of Vladimir were sold during that period. The liter size bottle of Vladimir was the third biggest seller. Vladimir sells at most stores for about $4.99 per liter or $8.99 for a half-gallon. Other brands start at $5.99 per liter, while the cheapest half gallon sells for about $10.99.
Smirnoff, which is the top-selling vodka in the world, ranks 15th in West Virginia sales. The half-gallon size bottle of Canadian Mist whiskey was the second biggest seller in the state. Popov vodka was fourth on the sales list.
Overall, liquor sales increased 2.1%in West Virginia in 2005, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of America.
