September 9-- A man from Charleston killed himself after a short police chase in the city early Saturday morning.

A media release from the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department says that Paul Shanklin II, 25, apparently shot himself as he was pulling over to the side of the road on I-79 near Mink Shoals around 3 a.m. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Charleston police spotted a white vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed down Capitol Street and followed it. Police say they used their lights and siren, but the driver initially refused to stop.

After pulling over on I-79, police say Shanklin shot himself. Police also detained a passenger in the vehicle. The news release states that police found drug items in the driver's possession. Police say they are not sure why Shanklin shot himself.
