RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Century Aluminum shutdown means a ripple effect in Ravenswood, everyone touched in a different way.

88-year-old Charles Dillon worked at the plant.

It wasn’t Century then, but either way the plant is clearly a cornerstone of the community.

“Back when I was working there, it was during the boom years, which was you know, they didn't pay attention to the money they just, it went in one hand, and out the other. That is the way it went,” Dillon said.

Dillon was a teenager during the depression, he’s seen this before, “they need to look forward instead of looking backward,” he said.

The plant has changed owners several times over the years, and there are still plenty of people like Mr. Dillon who feel like they've been through this before, say its only a matter of time before the plant is rescued again.

Dillon says this is an opportunity for the community to show everyone what their made of.

“Get down and dig for it, which is what everyone did during the depression,” Dillon said.

The plant says the shutdown with be complete February 20th.

WSAZ it would be nice to know if Century would ever think of re-opening.Lets not keep the hopes up of the men and women that have lost their jobs.We have been continually lied to by the upper management. From the most recent visit of Logan Kruger that told everyone that if we gave the 12.45% That Century could survive on 1200.00 per ton and they Century were prepairing for that. From Jim Chapman lying to the Public and state officals. We The Union didnt get a chance to vote WHY? We did what was asked, we buckled down cut costs eliminated injurys worked safely as asked. We were told by Jim Chapmen that we were more cost effective than Hawesville after the curtailment of 1 potline.I and many others who worked many years there would like some straight answers for once.To all those i have worked along side hourly and salary my thoughts and prayers to you and your loved ones it was a pleasure working with you

OMG "POOR on Feb 7", you're telling us that you've lived with resentment in your heart towards these factory works and their life styles for over 30 years because you couldn't land a job there? Now, does that make any sense? Get a %^&* life dude! That borders on psychotic behavior; you know that right? Nobody owes you a job! Sounds to me like you had plenty of time to find another way to make a good living or launch a career and your obviously distraught because you failed to do so. So, instead of doing something about it, you want to covet what you neighbor appears to have and get some sort of morbid satisfaction if they struggle. Oh well, at least you come about it honest. Being from WV and knowing how many people there think (don't think) and treat others; I'm not surprised by this pathetic posting. God I'm so glad I left that place. Everytime I get on this blog, it reminds me why I don't want to go back.

I truly hate this for Ravenswood It is a pretty clean little town,I've always enjoyed visiting there, now all we can do is pray, change was bound to come close to home, seems as though it has hit everywhere, yes it is scary,I am concerned also for the whole country,so we have to pray about it,GOD controls everything.
