Urban Renewal

Change is coming to Charleston’s east end. The Urban Renewal Authority is planning to get property owners to clean up their properties.

Folks are fed up with the look of their community!

Pick any city or town in our region and you will find some very rundown houses.

You may wonder why the owners don't just grab a hammer and fix it up! If Charleston’s Urban Renewal Authority gets their way, the owners may not have a choice.

If the authority contacts property owners about a piece of property they will have six months to fix it or the city can take it over. Right now there are a total of 11 sites on the city's list. Two were voted on yesterday.

Jim George, East End resident says, "It makes the place look bad because people trying to make it look better and some people don't care. It's good for the kids to have a nice place to play."

More properties will be added to the list. The authority is focusing mainly on Charleston’s east end.
