RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (AP) -- Jackson County's superintendent says the shutdown of Century Aluminum's plant in Ravenswood will force the county school system to make cuts in the next fiscal year.
Jackson County Schools will lose $2 million in annual property taxes that it receives from Century.
Schools Superintendent Blaine Hess says the loss of revenue is significant but school officials will try to minimize the effect of cuts on students.
The county also could see a decline in student enrollment as parents leave the area for jobs elsewhere.
Hess says the plant's shutdown won't affect the current budget.

People please, don't you know that when it comes to dumping on the little guy any excuse is better than none..especially in Jackson County.
Ask superintendant Hess why the school board spent taxpayer money on land for new schools in Ravenswood and Kenna when the taxpayers clearly said no on the bond levy they tried to push through. One piece of land in Eastwood is near 100 acres for 1 middle school we don't need. They bought all this property with our money and then posted it no hunting 3 days before buck season. This is not fair. Call him and ask what is going on. They wasted our tax dollars, took all this land and now Century Aluminum is closing which will cost the schools 2 mil. per year and they want to cut jobs next year. So much power is wrong to be used this way. Who do they think they are?
An industries property taxes are also based on their inventories, if there is no plant, then they will have no inventory. That is a huge amount of tax dollars. Yes, they will still have to pay their real estate taxes, but with no production, no inventory.
