Hospitals are known for saving lives, but lately, a couple of hospitals in our region have needed a little life support themselves. Now that deals have been hammered out in both Putnam and Kanawha counties, city leaders have a new project on their hands.
Saint Frances and Putnam General are two hospitals that have spent time in the last with uncertain futures.
Thomas Memorial’s purchase means jobs are staying put, but tax dollars are going away. The same is true in Putnam County. The rally to save Putnam General ended with a purchase agreement from Charleston Area Medical Center, which is also a non-profit organization. So the sale also means a shrinking tax base, but Saint Frances employees say not shrinking care.
It’s a sale that will affect more than just the employees.
Leaders in both Kanawha and Putnam counties will tell you the bottom line is that health care is a very important component of our communities. Even though money will be lost, quality of life when it comes to healthcare will remain the same.
