LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- An elderly Lawrence County, Kentucky couple was killed in a freak accident at their home Wednesday afternoon.

The sheriff says Cliston and Ruth Carter were driving up the gravel driveway at their house when somehow their pickup truck went out of control.

Investigators say the pickup went onto an embankment and then started backwards going over another embankment and overturned coming to rest upside down in a farm pond.

The couple, who were 87 & 83, was coming home from the doctor’s offices at the time of the accident.

The accident happened near Blaine just off Route 32.

Investigators say weather was not a factor in the crash.

The accident is still under investigation.

FYI: More than 300 people drown each year because they cannot escape a sinking vehicle; people of all ages and abilities, including my teenage grandson. Drowning is a terrible way to die. My mission is to educate everyone that you can escape while the vehicle is floating (most cars float for up to 10 minutes). Remember POGO: Pop the seatbelt; Open or break the side window; Get Out. You can climb on top of the car and then determine next steps. Do not open doors; that will flood the car quickly and trap anyone inside. This method has been tested and approved by experts. Having a window-breaking device at hand, where it can easily be reached and where it will not fly or float away, is important. However, the electrical systems in most vehicles stay operational for a long time, allowing you to lower the windows. Please share this information with your friends and family. 10,000 vehicles go into water every year. It could happen to you. Stay safe.

These were two wonderful people who will be missed by all that were lucky enough to know them. My prayers go out to the family. I'd like to thank all the emergency workers, telephone man, sheriff's office and all others who did everything they could to rescue them. I also have a special prayer for you. To Regulate, these folks had been to the dr, a neighbor took them, they were driving up their own driveway a short distance from her house. Please stop finding fault with everything on WSAZ and these comments. Life is more important than human err.
